Halva For Dessert

Since moving to the Mediterranean I've discovered that the variety of halva is pretty spectacular.  Some can be as gelatinousness as Jello, some is like a dry cake.  Most of them taste really good and often the texture is a lot smoother than it looks.  The thing is, I'm not really sure if halva is a candy or a dessert.  I've had it presented as both, as well as everything in between.  I've tried halva in cookie form, in packages, as carney food, and as a fine dessert.  Any opinions?
