Don’t look

The fine folks at Funtasticus give us a peek at the reality behind the box. Take a look at packaged foods the way they look on the their boxes compared to how they look for real. A couple of candies mentioned and it sure isn’t pretty. I think I’m going to start a food company that packages better looking food than what’s shown on the package.

Update day in spring

I saw a bird today. It reminded me that spring is coming. The three feet of snow in my front yard reminded me that winter just finished. This weeks review reminded me that of all the “tropical” fruit coconuts are my least favourite. It’s been a weird day to say the least.

Bad Day

Yup even the Candy Critic can have one. Without getting into too much detail let’s just say that things will improve I’m just not sure when or what the results will be. I’m so glad I always have you, my candy fanatic friends. Found this video on J list, made me smile a little.

The buck stops here

The fine folks at Hershey and Starbucks sent me the box full of treats. Best of all they asked me if I had any questions. I’m loaded with coffee and candy questions but let me know if you have any as well.
Coolest of all is the box they sent the treats in. It has all kinds of compartments perfect for discovering more chocolate treats.

Hey Toots

The fine folks at Tootsie Pop just sent me this awesome orange box full of treats.
They’re showing off their new stickless treats called Tootsie Pop Drops. Things are a changin’ in this world I tell ya.

It’s Pecan Day!

And I have no pecans to eat. You can also see by the amount of snow near my house that getting out to get any is not an easy feat. So I’ll just hope you guys can eat some and I’ll take a rain check on pecan eating fun times.

Chocolate Covered Raisin Day

I’ve decided this ‘National Chocolate Covered Raisin Day’ that I’d help people decided if chocolate covered raisins where really that tasty by doing a little survey. So with a bowl of the yummy treats in hand I asked several people which they would rather have:

A handful of chocolate covered raisins or a punch in the nose.
Looks like this is a vote for the raisins.

Not only a vote, but also he seems pretty happy with them too.

Went for the grab, this is looking great for the raisins.

Ooh, a punch in the nose for this young man.

Another raisin taker.

Looks like he didn’t want the raisins but it was better than a punch in the nose.

Yummy raisins win again.
This proves that chocolate covered raisins may in fact be the most popular candy ever (at least compared to bodily harm). I’m inviting the Chocolate Covered Raisin Board to use these statistics to help you out.

Happy Update, Easter, and Chip and dip day!

Wow this is really the kind of day people only dream about. In one day we get to celebrate 3 food events… Well kind of. First of all this weeks review was discovered by me while walking through a mall wondering which fun food court food I wanted. I decided to go with crappy mall Chinese food, and regretted it thoroughly.
Today is also Easter… I’m thinking that should have been the first thing mentioned but I really like the idea that you might be more excited about me updating this site than getting a bunch of cool chocolate stuff from a bunny.
It’s also National Chip and Dip day… OK I’m pretty sure this one’s made up and isn’t really a holiday, but that’s not going to stop me from eating chips and dip today after polishing off this giant chocolate egg.

Easter Ad

It seems that Cadbury is still going with the clucking bunny angle and good for them I say. Nothing is more entertaining with a twist of disturbing all at the same time.

Can they do that?

The fine folks at Hershey sent me this great Easter pack this year all filled with fun treats. I was super stoked and overlooked what might have been the coolest addition ever. Now normally when candy companies send me treats they send catalogue or at least some kind of written information. I generally skim it over but really the main thing on my mind is the sweet stuff in the box. This Hershey’s catalogue grabbed my attention a little more than usual.

How in the world did they get my name on the cover? Does everybody who gets this get their name on it? Are they kissing up to me? Am I paranoid, or have an over inflated ego about this entire potential fluke? I need to know.

Tell me what you see

For all those stores and advertising types that don’t believe advertising works here’s a little info for you. I saw this sign and was in a rush to get where I was going. Then after thinking about it I went way out of my way, back to this store, because I had to try one. Next weeks review I might ad.

Happy St Patrick’s Day

I really couldn’t think of any treat that represented this day better than a Shamrock Shake from Mac Donald’s. Although I can’t for the life of me figure out why it represents the people of Ireland other than it’s kind of green in colour (not that the people of Ireland are green in any way they just seen to like green things).

Although the sentiment was there the shake was revolting. The mint flavour was just weak enough to not hide the gross plain flavour of Mac Donald’s milkshake mix. If anybody knows of a better Irish treat to celebrate this grand day please let me know so I don’t have to suffer through this every year.

A bunny brought me this update.

See, one of the advantages of being the Candy Critic is you often get all your stuff kind of early. Santa and the Easter bunny always make sure I get a little something to post before the holiday so you guys can enjoy a fun read. I’m not really sure who laid these eggs for this weeks review, be it a chocolate bunny or a chocolate chicken. To be honest the whole creation of chocolate eggs is confusing to me. I prefer not to think about it too much and just enjoy all the treats I get instead.

Happy National Potato Chip Day!

Yes it’s that time of year again.
Time to crunch down on a yummy potato cut so thin baked nice and crispy. It’s also really yummy with a salt and vinegar kick.

Also since it’s Friday, here’s a classic chip clip from Johnny Carson.

Chomp, chomp, red, red

The folks at RedVines want to be sure we all have a great National Licorice day (April 12th for all taking note). The folks where great enough to send me all kinds of licorice to munch on to enjoy this special event.
Best of all, knowing my love of running around naked, they also sent me a shirt so you wouldn’t have to watch that kind of spectacle.

People care about Easter

I know I do, particularly after the fine people at Hershey/Cadbury sent me this cool box of stuff. It was filled to the brim with all kinds of Easter treats.

I’m most impressed with this bag of coconut cream kisses; you’ll be seeing a review real soon.

Allison was most impressed with the clucking bunny; in fact she’s sitting next to me right now with it on her head.

Dundas Square Keeps Getting Yummier

We saw the best billboard ever when we were in Toronto last week! Little (or are they full-sized?) men ripping open a giant … no … humongous chocolate bar!

It could only have been better if I could have reached the chocolate to take a bite…

This week’s delay brought to you by a really nasty storm that took out most of North America.

What a week we’ve had here at Candy Critic. What was supposed to be a fun trip around Southern Ontario and Upstate New York basically turned into Allison and I hanging around Barrie Ontario for a few days, with a few quick stops in Toronto. Don’t feel bad for me or anything, I managed to have a few candy related adventures, and I also managed to pick up a few cool things for the members. It was fun and even a little relaxing, just not planned the way I thought it would be.
We’re back home now though and this weeks review comes from a place in the U.S. that probably didn’t see any snow, in fact I’m pretty sure they don’t get snow at all. I just wish I had no snow in my driveway right now.

Cup Cake or Muffin

While enjoying a little birthday treat today a problem came over me. What’s the difference between a muffin and cupcake?
My theory is a cupcake is a muffin with icing. So to prove this theory I picked up a Tim Hortons muffin (chocolate chip) and Allison slathered it with icing.
The conclusion, muffins are just cupcakes, and cupcakes are just muffins. The difference is the icing. Although this particular muffin wasn’t really built to handle cupcake style weight. I laugh at all you health nuts out there.

This week’s treat is brought to you by my birthday.

Well really it isn’t, I just wanted to mention to all you fine folks that my birthday is this week, and that means that my birthday week starts tomorrow. What does that have to do with the review this week? Well nothing at all, other than this weeks review is all about monkeys and I really like monkeys. I guess what I’m saying is read the review, celebrate my birthday with me, and just enjoy the coming of spring (I’m not sure where that last part fits in but it sounds profound).
