Happy New Years

My resolution this year is to eat more things that are red.

News about the stuff on your tree.

So it would appear Candy Canes are not only tasty but they’re also good for you… Now I’m one of the biggest fans of candy in the whole world, but I can’t justify the idea that candy canes are “good” for anybody. Unless maybe if you have bad breath.

Little and Orange

For Christmas this year Allison picked up a box of tiny little clementines.

Sure they may not look small compared to my mouth but next to a regular clementine they’re tiny.
Best of all was the comic on the box, made me laugh all night.

I just finished having left over turkey… again… on update day.

So I’m just winding down on my Christmas extravaganza and things went pretty smooth. I got a few treats in during the holidays but not as much as you might think. I also thought of doing another review every day for a week in a few weeks featuring Asian treats. It’s just a thought at this point but I have a whole lot of them to review. Well enjoy this weeks review and enjoy any new years treats you manage to get your hands on.

Desert disaster or skin care triumph?

The other night Allison and I decided to make some chocolate fondue with 100% pure chocolate a little Splenda and some whipping cream.

The chocolate became all oily and lumpy and we can’t figure out what caused it. I’ve burned chocolate before but it’s never separated like this.

We managed to pour off a whole lot of the oil, which we figured was coco butter.
Allison even put some on her hands and it smelt and felt great.

Swiss Chalet Festive Special 2008

Every year it is every Canadians duty to eat a chicken dinner with an ice cream scoop of strange looking stuffing at Swiss Chalet. That and health care are the only thing that separate us from Americans.
This year as always a yummy treat was to follow my meal, and as it’s been in the recent past Lindt chocolates were on the menu.
I’m ok with these little treats and this year there’s a new addition, orange. I’m not a big fan of orange chocolate but the orange is subtle enough that it’s not bad. The white chocolate ball still remains the crappiest one with the milk chocolate still being my favourite.

The last update day before Christmas.

And I seem to have a cold, or the flu, or something. I just don’t feel great. I’ve got 3 days to get all better and be a new man so I can enjoy the holidays like a mad man. For now I’m going to except the fact that my advent calendar chocolate isn’t going to get eaten up at the right rate, sit down with some soup and maybe read an old review or two. Maybe this weeks review will cheer me up a bit.

I like candy

I just got a cool package. I wonder what’s in it?
Oh my, could it be?
Cool, it’s a new flavour of bliss chocolates from Hershey’s. Minty fun!

Christmas Candy Lie

I went to the bulk store today and saw all kinds of Christmas Candy. I also saw a whole bunch of Easter and other holiday treats re-wrapped and sold for Christmas. These Easter Eggs are not Christmas candy even if they’re wrapped in Santas.

Table the deal

I recently came across "The Periodic Table of Awesomeness” and was so pleased to not only find Doritos and Chocolate on this table, but the fact that cheese and chocolate are right next to each other made me squeal with delight.

I have a problem, guess which.

The candy world should either be disgusted or overjoyed to know that candy cigarettes rank as high on the Nassau County Legislature as a problem as heroin use.

Baby Names

The good news is that someone actually wanted to name their kid “Gummy Bear” in Australia. The bad news is that it’s against Australian law to name your kid “Gummy Bear”

I’ve been good all year, except maybe update day.

Christmas is coming and I’m looking so forward to eating every single candy cane off the tree. Speaking of candy canes, I recently asked a few people if candy cane was one word or two and I got the following response:

“Like 'walking stick' the 'candy cane' contains two elements: 'Cane', being the primary descriptive noun, and 'Candy' being the modifying adjective. This could easily be applied to similar structures, such as 'wooden cane' or 'aluminum cane'. In all instances, we speak of a 'cane', yet each one is modified by the attendant adjective.

Ergo, there are two words, as one exists as a subordinate modifier.”

I hope you learned something too.

Christmas Carol?

I’ve never heard this song before but you know I’ll be singing it around the Christmas tree this year.

Candy Gifts?.. For me?..

I’m getting a whole bunch of e-mails about all kinds of candy gift packages. Here are a few I wouldn’t mind finding under the tree this year. Hint, hint!TCHO has some great packages full of well-tested treats.

There’s always Emily’s chocolate too, I personally recommend anything they make with cookies in it.

Warm screen saver.

The folks at PES are giving away a cool (warm actually) screen saver that looks like a fireplace. Best of all, this fireplace is made up of pretzel logs and candy corn flames. It warms any candy fanatics heart.

Jawbreaker Mystery

“Explosive candy centre”?.. What do they mean by candy? In fact what do they mean by explosive? Too bad I didn’t have any change at the time.

Sorry Hockey Pucks…

I’m not great at pre-planning reviews on Candy Critic and today was a prime example. See I found two great treats to review over the holidays but I didn’t think in advance enough to place them in the right place on the reviews coming soon. So basically I had to knock Hockey Pucks down so I could fit the other reviews in before Christmas. It’s not that they’re bad or anything like that, they’re just not thematically important right now. I’ll bring them back though, and there will be a large fan fare I assure you. That’s not to slight this weeks review either. They’re a “hunk-a hunk a” banana cream fun.

Dear Margo Howard. Thank you.

This letter showed up today in "Ask Margo". http://news.yahoo.com/s/dear_margo/20081205/en_dm/margo_howard20081205

When Gum Earns Opprobrium
DEAR MARGO: Maybe I'm getting too old (61), but when did it become socially acceptable for adult men and women to chew gum with their mouths open and constantly "crack" their gum? I can understand a person indulging himself or herself in an activity better suited to a 10-year-old in the privacy of one's home -- but not in public sitting behind someone at the movies, standing in line at the supermarket, or at the office. If I turn and ask the person to please knock off the popping noise, the response is angry looks or verbal abuse about how it is a free country. I find this rude. Does that make me an oddball? Granted, there are many things going on in the world these days that are more significant, but the sound effects from gum are driving me nuts.
--- COTTON IN MY EARS

DEAR COT: Actually, according to traditional etiquette, it has never been socially acceptable to chew gum in public, let alone treat it like bubble gum and crack it. (Though I will say it is satisfying and something I occasionally do when I am by myself.) I am either too inhibited or too hidebound by early training to even chew gum in public, though I see a lot of it around. (Sometimes ex-smokers substitute gum.) I am not surprised you get an earful when you ask the gum-snappers to knock it off; they don't think they're doing anything wrong. As to your query, it is a free country, those people are rude, and you're not an oddball ... just someone with a more finely tuned social sense than some others.
--- MARGO, TRADITIONALLY

Yay, Margo! And yay, "Cotton in my ears"! It's about time somebody acknowledged that gum-chewing in public (especially open-mouthed, which is disgusting) is a violation of etiquette.

Heck, I'd be happy if people just closed their mouths - I'm not after the full politeness of doing what *should* be done - chewing at home only. That would be Utopia!!!

If only

This would be the perfect Christmas or birthday gift for me.

Can I have more peas?

The other day at the bulk store I discovered a great little snack. I don’t think it’s really candy so I’m not going to review it, but I am going to tell you about it.

These are toasted peas. Note they don’t have wasabi on them. I find that wasabi often overpowers these fun little friends in taste. Basically when you buy wasabi peas your buying a way to eat wasabi. I’m not a big fan of wasabi but I love these peas.

They kind of taste like pumpkin seeds and they’re super salty. I think these may become a regular treat.

Once again, the Candy Cane donut.

I really dig Tim Horton’s special donut treats, although sometimes they keep certain ones for way too long.
This month however is the return of the Candy Cane donut. It’s something that you’d think would be a really bad idea, but it’s not. It think it works because the donut is chocolate and the icing holding the candy cane bits on is chocolate as well. It could be that or the fact that I really like crushed candy canes and chocolate donuts.

I’ve got a lot of update type things on my mind right now

I’ve been writing like a fiend trying to get some work out and it’s not going exactly as planned. I’ve also been thinking about Christmas, and more importantly I’ve been out Christmas shopping. So all I have to say is my mind is a little out of it right now. On a good note I managed to find a few treats to try out over the holidays that I’ve never tasted before, so a cool review is in the cards for Christmas. Well enjoy this weeks review.

What do I Want?

Christmas is coming and I’m starting to get e-mails from candy folks about the treats they have in store. I’m also still on the fence about what treat to review for the holidays. The number of “new treats” has diminished in the last few years so I’m searching for something new and it’s not easy.

Revieeeewww in Spaaaaaaaaaaaaaace!!!

Hey it’s update day and I didn’t use the words “update day” in the title. It could be because I’ve been super busy all week and I’m looking forward to another busy week ahead. It doesn’t mean that I won’t give you crazy folks a review, because that would be just cruel. Also I’ll be keeping an eye open for any new Christmas treats over the next little while because I have to pick this years Christmas review.

A trip to TNT grocery store

No trip to TNT would be complete without seeing a few products that boggle the imagination.
This tuna spread is the choice of all the “Laaaaadies” (ladies said in about the creepiest way ever)
Two questions: Why would I buy sweat when I make enough of it? And even if I did need to buy it what the heck is a “pocari”?

Ladies and Gentlemen: I present to you what might be the best idea ever in the history of mankind... Cheese ice cream. I love food.

I just need focus

I’m in the thick of studying right now, and I’ve got papers due, I need a treat that can help me focus. I’ve had a few that claim to have brain improving powers, but I don’t know if anything can help me now. Even this weeks review didn’t help my brain, although new candy always raises my spirits.

You know what’s better than a chocolate fountain?..

A really big chocolate fountain! (Particularly if it looks kind of like the Stanley Cup.)
