Christmas is coming and I’m looking so forward to eating every single candy cane off the tree. Speaking of candy canes, I recently asked a few people if candy cane was one word or two and I got the following response:“Like 'walking stick' the 'candy cane' contains two elements: 'Cane', being the primary descriptive noun, and 'Candy' being the modifying adjective. This could easily be applied to similar structures, such as 'wooden cane' or 'aluminum cane'. In all instances, we speak of a 'cane', yet each one is modified by the attendant adjective.
Ergo, there are two words, as one exists as a subordinate modifier.”
