Happy Halloweeny…

Go scare up some treats!
CC

It’s a little disappointing.

I thought it would be fun to collect a list of links to candy companies that might have cool things celebrating Halloween this year. I figure it’s their big time of year to sell candy so why not push it with something fun, but apparently many candy companies don’t seem to keen on the idea.
Godiva has a little add about their Halloween selection, but to be fair they’ve been e-mailing me (I’m a member of their mailing list) about all kinds of Halloween sales, so they’re ok.
Pillsbury has a little Halloween recipe, but to be honest I can hardly call them a candy company.
On the little Debbie site all they have is a plug for “Fall Party” ideas, I mean come on, it’s Halloween!
Although Willy Wonka doesn’t have a Halloween link per se, they do have this thing that you can make a cool Umpa zombie thing, I guess to truly know if it’s a “Halloween” thing is to check back later.

The only “large” candy company to even have the word “Halloween” in it and the idea that some kids might trick or treat in hopes of getting some of the snacks they make was M&M. All in all I’m very disappointed with the big candy companies and look forward to a better effort next year.

Hey cool…

Just to let you guys know that the fine people at the Grand Rapids Press just gave us a mention in a fun article about Halloween treats.

Check it out here!

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas?

It being the 29th of October what else would you expect to find all over store shelves but Christmas treats, right? I came across these while shopping for some sunflower seeds at my local bulk food store. Yup I eat sunflower seeds, shocking no?
Now the treats themselves didn’t shock me or even interest me that much because I’ve already reviewed them, or at least their Caramilk cousins. What blew me away was the crazy snowman munching on his chocolate snowman buddy.
It’s like snow man cannibalism, it’s just not right.

Yell it proud… UPDATE DAY!!!!!

It’s the Halloween review and to be honest it gets harder and hard to find a new treat to review. This year for Halloween I couldn’t really find anything new that interested me, instead I decided to further explore a classic treat. Well maybe not classic, it’s more of a new wave classic. Either way I hope next year something new and exciting jumps at me.

Makes my mouth water

This commercial used to make me want Starburst so much. I just watched it again and now that I’m all grown up I no long have to want them anymore. I can just go to the store and get some. Stupid commercial making me have to get dressed and go to the store.

War museum Candy

While checking out the Canadian War Museum I came across this interesting treat.
Propaganda and candy are an interesting combination.

Rolover regular hot chocolate

Recently on a trip to Quebec I stopped at the Couche Tard (Sleep Late) to pick up something hot to warm me up for the fall season.

I picked out a Rolo hot chocolate.

And although this photo may look like I didn’t like it, in fact I really did. What this photo shows is what a wimp I am when it comes to drinks that are too hot.

Happy update day and Pumpkin Cheesecake day too!

This weeks review is pretty special. It’s special because I was lucky enough to visit the fine folks in PEI that manufacture this great treat. It’s also special because I’m pretty fond of it too. I guess it’s pretty strange as well, the idea of mixing potatoes with candy, but strange treats generally hold a special place in my heart.
I have to be the first to admit that I’ve never tried pumpkin cheesecake ever in my life. And if we’re playing the honesty game I have to admit that I’m not a huge fan of pumpkin pie either. That’s probably why I’ve never had pumpkin cheesecake, I mean given the opportunity to eat a cheesecake with berries or chocolate I would take that any day before pumpkin. In the interest of being fair if I ever have the opportunity to try it I’ll be sure to report it back to you.

It’s been a while

For some reason I completely forgot about Friday video day. For those of you that may not know I used to post a candy related video from You Tube every Friday. Well I’m going to bring it back and see how it floats. This week’s video is strange but at least it advertises a tasty snack.

A note from the National Confectioners Association

“From Wrigley Field to Ghirardelli Square, to Hersheypark and Downtown Disney, NCA found the tastiest towns in American (perfect for trick-or-treaters of all ages) based on new consumer data and an abundance of local candy manufacturers and attractions.”

I’m wondering how my house would rank?

Two things today.

First of all a big thanks to Allison who diligently went through all the super amount of Spam we got today because somebody decided Candy Critic would be a good spoof e-mail source. To this I also ad that if you sent me an e-mail today and didn’t get a response it may have been lost in the shuffle, try and again and hopefully it’ll be ok.

Also last night I heard that one of the foremost chocolatiers in England was accused of squishing chocolates from a rival candy shop. He soon parted ways with the company he worked for because apparently there’s video proof of his misdeeds.

I won’t die!!! It’s Science!

Science American just published a little article about the facts and fictions on gum swallowing. I’m pleased to inform you that swallowing your gum will not kill you. I’m pretty happy about that because with all the dentist trouble I’ve been having lately at least knowing the gum I’m swallowing is not staying in my system for 7 years is one less health risk to worry about.

Gateau Fromage

This weekend Allison and I went to Montreal to see stuff and do stuff. One of the stuff was to eat some cheesecake at a place called KG. I was hopping with that kind of name the slices would be ridiculously big, they where ok but my imagination was a little more ridiculous in size.

I picked up a slice of this awesome butterscotch chocolate cheesecake.

But the great thing about going with friends is that I also managed to snag a piece of the strawberry cheesecake and a triple layer three kinds of chocolate cheesecake. My favourite cheesecakes often are ridiculously big and stupendously decadent but for normal cheese cake these where ok.

Thai Date? Update. Thai Date. No update.

There are only 4 people in the whole world that understand the title of this BLOG, and I’m ok with that. However if you manage to get your hands on a pack of this weeks review you’ll be in luck. It’s a new treat and not around too much, but I see big things on the horizon for them, or at least I hope so.

Toronto Asian Superstore

While in Toronto Allison and I stopped in this new crazy big and fun Asian food store. We picked up all kinds of cool things that you’ll be seeing here on Candy Critic over the next few weeks. We even picked up a few surprises for the members of the Candy of the Month Club.

National Angel Food Day!

You mean it’s that time already, time to enjoy a nice piece of cake, light fluffy and for some reason affiliated with religion? I’m sure I’m not the first person to point out that something fairly bad for you has positive religious implications but I’m also pretty sure that in the grand religious cake association world the cake part might in fact be ok. We all know it’s the icing that’s from Hell.

Marsh in Mellows

While in Toronto this past weekend I came across this cool place.

It wasn’t open yet, so I was a little sad.I went back every 15 minutes or so but it still wasn’t open; I’m thinking it means soon as in days or weeks. If anybody has the chance to check this place out let me know how it is and send me something will ya!

Cadbury Bust

So I just got back from the Cookstown Outlet Mall near Barrie Ontario. It was a good time out buying all kinds of crazy kitchen stuff, including a waffle iron. I looked down one of the corridors and I spotted the Cadbury outlet store. My stomach took two flips and my mouth started watering like crazy. I figured I'd find one of two things:

Discount chocolate, be it defective off the line stuff, or just plain cheap stuff.

Cool unique treats, things that are maybe discontinued, new or maybe even trial stuff.

What I found was disappointment. It was basically just a store selling the same stuff I've seen everywhere a little more expensively than I've seen it at many places. All this and the toy train was busted, the paint was chipping off many of the scenery pieces and they didn't even have much as far as fun merchandise. Really not worth the visit.

On the road for the holidays.

So for the holidays Allison and I have decided to use this time to go visit some family. I in turn have decided to use this time to eat some junk food and call it work. Unfortunately we had to kind of rush to get to our first destination so I we couldn't stop too often

The good news is Allison needed a coffee fix and Mac Donald’s was the only place we could stop. I feeling the need to explore figured a box of Mac Donald land cookies would be perfect. I was really disappointed because they no longer come in a box with a cool cut out drawing on the back. I was however very happy about the fact that the cookie shapes are exactly the same.

I also noticed that the cookies have a strange lemon flavour. I'm thinking that I probably just never noticed it as a kid at least I hope so.

Some News From Nestle

"Chocolate fans and aspiring filmmakers could win $5,000 and a chance to have their video used in the new Nestle 100 Grand ad campaign. The Nestle 100 Grand Commercial Contest, which runs through November 1st, 2007, asks chocolate lovers to create a 30 second video that shows how they reward themselves with the 100 Grand bar.

To enter or to read complete details, visit http://www.nestle100grand.com/."

Now you'd think since they call their bar "100 Grand" the prize amount could be a little more apropriate.

Why do they drill more holes in your teeth at the dentist?

Today was yet another day of Dentist trauma for the Candy Critic. I’m really starting to believe that although the job itself is simple these Dentist visits are making this job pretty lousy. I’m also learning that maybe my last dentist wasn’t as thorough as he should have been. I haven’t taken any pictures of my teeth lately but here’s a little sketch that should give you an idea of how I felt today.

I’m feeling a little blue.

This ice cream machine featured on this link is perfect for me today. I’ve been busy and trying to keep things going on my little corner of the web. I wonder if you’re really sad does it give you the chocolate vanilla twist, because that’s what I could go for right now.
Also just so you feel a little jealous right now I should tell you that one of our lucky members of the Candy of the Month Club this month is going to score themselves a free pack of Embitermints, that’s next weeks review. You’re too late to get into this contest but I assure you we’ll have more in the future and you could be on that happy candy train with by visiting the Candy Critic store and signing up.
