So Canada... Eh? - Cookies & Cream Slab

Normally when I post this Monday blog, I write about the new review we've just posted on candycritic.org. Today however I have something else to talk about. As you may or may not have known, I had been living for the last 3 years in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It was a great place to be, and a really interesting place to get snacks. This past weekend however I left this fine city to head back to my home and native land, Canada. More specifically I'm now living in Ottawa. Well you could call it living, except for the fact that I'm still under quarantine and locked up in a small apartment until the government is fairly certain I don't have Covid 19.

I'm fine being locked up, it's giving me time to work on Snack Facts, and maybe work on a few blog posts as well. It's also giving me time to comb through the Canadian grocery store websites to plan out some of the treats that I'll sample now that I'm living in Canada again. I have to say, I'm pretty excited about some of the treats.

Also be sure to follow me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter to keep up with the quarantine and what's happening here in Canada.

You can also follow Candy Critic on Patreon where we just updated several of the tiers.

I Thought A Lot About Today's Review - Life Savers "Black Currant Pastilles"

The reason I gave today's new candy review so much thought is that I will likely not be posting another review this week. For those that don't follow Candy Critic on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, you may not know that I post a second review every week on Thursdays. I do this as a bonus for those following on our social media, and to help keep my review backlog under control. This week however I will not be posting a review, and I can't really tell you why at this given moment.

When this week is over, I'm guessing you'll have a pretty good idea why I can't talk about it, but for now I've decided to leave the reason a little quiet. Needless to say that since I'm not posting a review later this week, I wanted to make sure that today's new candy review is a good one. I wanted to be sure that it was not only a good candy, but that it was a little interesting as well.

I think I achieved that.

Make sure to follow Candy Critic on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to not only be informed about future secret review postings, but you also might find out what's going on this week.

Thinking About Wafers... And Other Things - Kagi "Classic"

Today's new review got me thinking about wafers. To most people wafers are just another form of flour and sugar that's often associated with cookies. To me, wafers present a conundrum in the candy world, a riddle that is sometimes solved, and often failed. Whenever I buy a wafer based candy bar, I feel like I'm taking a risk, and also about to think very deeply about what I'm about to eat.

Strangely, this overthinking of a wafer bar has also made me think about my future, both immediate and long term. As is regular here at candycritic.org, there are changes on the horizon. Some of these changes are in my control, others are not. I have no plans on stopping Candy Critic, but as is common, there are some changes coming.

Playing With Your Candy - Creatables

There are a certain group of candies out there that are designed to be played with. Some pull if off really well, like the Japanese Kracie kits, while others just don't really work, like these Creatables. Reviewing these made me think that I should pull together a list of best and worst candies you should play with. The list would rate the candies by nothing more than where they fun to play with, I would ignore taste and texture entirely. So while this candy didn't review very well, it at least inspired a fun idea.

Chocolate Makes Me Think Of Home - Toffee & Nib "70% Cacao"

This week I've been thinking about Canada, the place where I was born and lived most of my life. This weekend I also pulled out my list of "classic candies I have not reviewed" and it made me think. First of all it reminded me that I haven't updated this blog with a new post about "Classic Candies I Haven't Reviewed And Why" lately. It also reminded me that I'm likely going to be going home fairly soon, and while its a little different than the home I left, I'm hoping that some of my creature comforts are still there, and I'm really looking forward to eating and Oh Henry bar, or a Vachon cake.

Japanese Candy All Week - Charge Pop "Lemon"

We're kicking off this week's candy review-a-thon with something a little sour, a little sweet, and strangely a little salty. The theme for this week's review-a-thon is Japanese treats, a subject we've done a few review-a-thons about in the past. I have to say that Japan is one of the countries that seems to have a limitless supply of candies to write about, so it's pretty likely that this won't be our last Japanese candy review-a-thon either.

A Sour Review That's A Little More Mango... Kind Of - Hi Sour "Super Sour Mango"

I don't think I understand sour candies. That's not to say that I don't like sour candies. In fact, sour is probably one of my favourite extreme candy flavours out there. I'd rather have a super sour candy than a spicy candy any day of  the week. I just don't understand why I, or anyone else, likes them. The thing is, we do, and that's just the way it is. Sour candies have been a staple of my candy eating life ever since I was a kid. I've had some very intense sour experiences, and I've had a few failures too. The thing is, if you offer me a super sour candy, I'm going to take it.

Today's New Candy Review Makes Me Think About What's On A Package - Snap and Crackle

Whenever I review a candy, I try my hardest not to be influenced by the package. The thing is, the more I think about it, the more I realize that the package of a candy treat is really a big part of any candy experience. It's the first thing you see when you're at a candy store, and it often gives you some insight into what you should be expecting. Sometimes that expectation is only hinted at, and sometimes it's laid out in full words (I'd say full English, but I've had several candies that have zero English on them at all). This candy on the other hand has what it's "supposed" to be written in plain English, yet it doesn't actually have any of what it's describing. Strangely, this actually disappointed me.

I'm Feeling Cake Like Today - Twiggies "Cream Dream Vanilla"

I realized something while writing this review of an obvious Twinkies rip off, I've never actually reviewed regular Twinkies. It seems like an obvious treat that someone like me should be reviewing, but here we are many years into this project and I still don't have a Twinkies review. I'm not sure when I'll have a review either, mostly because right now I'm not living in North America, and believe it or not, Twinkies are pretty hard to find in most parts of the world. It's The Start Of A Candy Bar Review-A-Thon!

Sometimes I'm very specific with the review-a-thons on Candy Critic. It could be that I focus on a particular brand, or it could be that I even look at a particular treat. Other times I'm much looser, this is one of those times. I also think that when I do these very loose review-a-thons, I tend to repeat myself. Cooking Up Some Toffee With Boxcar - Another Sweet Place That's Open For Business

We have yet another great sweet company to check out today. For the next little while, we’re going to look at sweet places that can still bring a smile to your face. Today we’re looking at a candy company out of the good old US of A.
Cooking With Boxcar might seem like an unconventional name of a place to get homemade toffee, but don't let the name fool you. These guys make classic toffees, and John (AKA Boxcar) has a pretty deep Italian cooking family history to make sure he's doing it right.
During these difficult time, Cooking With Boxcar has continued to stay open to make sure anybody craving a crunchy bite of toffee isn't denied. They even have some interesting deals on right now for Mother's Day.  Since they deliver almost anywhere in the USA, make sure to check out cookingwithboxcar.com if you need some crunchy sweet fun right now.

(ED – This is not a paid advertisement, we here at Candy Critic want to help the local candy shops in this very difficult time. If you’re feeling down, and you need a little sweet treat, make sure to visit the website of your local candy shop, and consider placing an order, many are still open for curbside pick up or delivery. If you run a small sweet, snack or dessert shop, let us know, we’ll be happy to feature you on this blog and on our social media to let people know you’re still open for business.)

We're On A Roll With Today's New Review - Mini Churros "Original"

I'm not sure how, but I seem to have missed this churro trend of late. I seem to have missed it by so much that I think it's already starting to fall out fashion (correct me if I'm wrong). It's not that I don't like churros, I just can't say that I've ever eaten a churro that blew me away. They're fine, but most places that sell churros offer other treats that are much more appealing to me. Maybe I just haven't had a great churro, or maybe it's just not my thing.

Even The Worst Chocolate Bar Is Still A Chocolate Bar - I Love Brunei Darussalam "Dark Chocolate"

While I was writing this review, I was a little nervous that I might offend someone. I didn't hate this bar, but it did disappoint me a little. The review seems kind of negative, and frankly I'll stand by the fact that this is not the best chocolate bar I've eaten in my life (either theme wise or quality wise). The thing is, it was still a chocolate bar, and I still enjoyed it. With a few exceptions, that can actually be said about just about every review I've ever done on Candy Critic. Even some of the lowest scoring treats on this site are still fun to eat. With a few exceptions, there really isn't any one treat that I would recommend avoiding completely.

Click here to read this negative review that I felt a little guilty about writing.

A New Candy Critic Video Where I Compare Two Very Similar Japanese Candies

For a while, I actually thought that the Hello Panda and the Koala cookies from Japan were the same treat. Part of my life was seeing Hello Pandas on the shelf, and thinking that I remembered them being Koalas, only to see Koalas on the shelf a month later thinking I remembered them as being Pandas. The Top 6 Easter Candies I've Reviewed On Candy Critic, and My Least Favourite

Here's the strange thing about this list, every single entry is chocolate based. Even stranger, is that all but one is egg themed. I think it's safe to say that Easter is really a chocolate heavy holiday and the best way to eat this chocolate is in egg form. After doing a little checking (you can check out entire selection of Easter treat review here), it appears that only 4 of the 33 Easter reviews I've written are not chocolate based. While there is no denying that Easter is chocolate heavy, it could also be that I tend to lean towards chocolate Easter treats as well.

So here's the list of our top six Easter treats that I've reviewed on Candy Critic:

6 (tied with 5) with a total score of 12 - Milk Chocolate Eggs "with a Hazelnut Praline Filling"

I remember picking these up and not thinking much of them, after all they're just boring eggs covered in foil. Turns out I was wrong, for all the right reasons.

Click here to check out this review.

5 (tied with 6) with a total score of 12 - Green and Black's "Organic Milk Chocolate Egg"

This is one of the treats that changed the way I thought about organic chocolate. I used to think it was a gimmick, but after eating this egg I realized that there might be something to this organic chocolate.

Click here to check out this review.

4 (tied with 3) with a total score of 12.5 - L'il Scoops

Not only was this a fine quality chocolate treat, but it was super creative as well. Getting a chocolate egg is always fun, but packaging them up like real eggs is really cool.

Click here to check out this review.

3 (tied with 4) with a total score of 12.5) - Butter Cream Egg

This is proof that shopping outside of the main big box stores is a great idea for Easter. There are many small candy makers that are creating some amazing treats for Easter, and this is a great example of that.

Click here to check out this review.

2 with a score of 13 - Iddy Biddy Bunnies

This is a great example of an Easter gimmick that works well. It works well because they're is just something so satisfying about putting a whole bunch of tiny chocolate bunnies in your mouth at once. It also doesn't hurt that the chocolate is really good too.

Click here to check out this review.

1 with a score of 14 - Crème Egg

I've recently learned that there are people that actually hate the Cadbury Crème Egg. They say that it's too sweet. I do agree that it's really sweet, but I don't mind, it just tastes so great and it's a fun gimmick too.

Click here to check out this review.

Bonus, our lowest rated Easter treat with a score of 3.5 - Dark Chocolate Gold Brick Egg

It's disappointing chocolate, disappointing filling, and a boring theme. It's sad when holiday candy disappoints.

Make sure too check out all our Easter review here.

It's The Start Of A Rude Review-A-Thon - Bull's Balls

I'm not sure what inspired me to pick up all of the treats that I'm going to review this week. They're not only extremely rude (I'm not against rude really, as long as it has a point), but they also appear to be more gimmick than substance. Maybe I was hoping that I would be surprised that any (or maybe all) of these rude candies might have something else to them that I didn't expect. Maybe they're more than just a candy that looks good on the shelf of a candy store, maybe they're unique and creative too. Maybe I just wanted to justify my suspicions that these are in fact just gimmick candies, with not much to offer that candy world.

Rocky Mountain Chocolate at Square One Shopping Center – A Canadian Institution is Here for You

We have yet another great sweet store to check out. For the next little while, we’re going to look at sweet places that can still bring a smile to your face. Today we’re looking at a branch from one of the great sweet treat chains in Canada.
I will say that no trip back home for me is complete, without a stop at a Rocky Mountain Chocolate shop.
There are a few locations of this great chain all over Canada, but today we’re going to look at the fine folks running the location at the Square One Shopping Center in Mississauga, Ontario. This particular location is run by Bonnie and Roman a husband and wife team making some classic Canadian treats.
Unfortunately, the mall itself is closed due to health concerns, however Bonnie and Roman don’t want you to miss out on a great Easter this year. They’re still offering some of the Easter treats available from Rocky Mountain Chocolate and deliver it right too you. Just send them an email (squareone@rockychoc.com), and let them know that you want your Easter fix. They’ll deliver your treats to anywhere in or around Mississauga, and you’ll be able to munch on some seriously fun sweets this Easter.

Amazing Candy/Junk Food Things That You Should Buy - Cherry Starburst

The "best" flavour of Starburst is a very divisive debate in the candy world. I believe this is because even the worst Starburst flavour (at least in their standard package) is still great. Over the next little while, we’re going to feature candy stores all over the world that are bringing a little bit of sweetness into the world right now. Today we’re going to check out a sweet shop with heart, from my home town of Toronto, Ontario (that’s Canada eh).
I’ve been following The Candy Bar Toronto on social media for a while now and there’s just something really fun about this shop.
They have a local following that just loves them, and that all comes from the amazing personalities of the people who run it.
It’s great to see a candy store that’s all about fun, and it reflects in all the candy treats that they sell.
Right now, they’re not letting anybody into the store (for health and safety reasons), but they’re accepting online and curb-side orders, and making sure that their community is still smiling. If you’re in Toronto, and need a sweet fix, make sure to place an order and stop by. Even if you’re not in Toronto , they ship across Canada too. Follow them on Instagram to see pictures that will warm your heart. You can check out their website at thecandybar.ca.
