A Christmas Special You Don't Want To Miss - The Candy Cane Shiv

I was eating a candy cane the other day when I poked myself in the back of the throat with the really sharp end that had formed. It got me thinking about life in general, then I thought about all the little kids (and immature adults) that might be injured by these very dangerous candies. So, I decided to investigate the candy cane shiv, and the results are very fascinating.

Classic/Creative Candy Advertisement

Since we're right between the 4th of July and Canada day, I thought I would mention the most controversial difference between Americans and Canadians when it comes to candy.  That would be the availability of Kinder Eggs.  A simple chocolate egg with a little toy inside is a great example of how laws differ on either side of the border.  In the US, they're illegal, in Canada, they're a staple.  As far as I know the law in the US that bans them says that you cannot have a candy with a toy inside it.  Americans are afraid that kids will choke on the toys, Canadians aren't so worried.  What do you think is right?

A Cool Candy Thing

I was a little worried about promoting this item, but not because I thought it was a silly or useless product.  I was worried about promoting the Ben and Jerry's ice cream lock because I didn't want Allison to know these existed, and then lock me out of my ice cream.  While the thought behind these is great, the idea of denying someone ice cream is a little sad.

Halloween Link-O-Rama Part 5

Unreal candy has made some Halloween treats with no extra ingredients.

So why do you think you might be getting a poison chocolate bar or a razor blade in your apple this year?

Another awesome demon Halloween cake, this one with 100% more horse awesomeness.

I like the idea of candy corn being such a big influence on other foods, I'm a little baffled though because so many people hate candy corn.

USA Today has a list of the most popular Halloween candy in the USA, did your favorite treat make the list?

Halloween Candy Links - The Last One

If you love ice cream, and you also have too much left over candy (I don't know if that's actually possible), then here's your solution.

Mental Floss answers the age old Halloween question "Has Anyone Ever Really Handed Out Poisoned Halloween Candy?"

Tuesday's Candy Links

It appears there's a Cadbury chocolate forgery ring in Indore.

Is Chicago the candy capital of the world, well they have a candy museum.

It appears that some people think those little detergent packages look like candy, that would explain my sticky laundry.

It's National Taffy Day!!!

Taffy is the most dangerous candy in my book.  I've had more candy related injuries from this stuff than any other kind of candy.  Most of said injuries involved chipped teeth and pulled fillings.  All I'm saying is, if you're going to enjoy National Taffy Day, enjoy responsibly.

Tuesday's Candy Links

Is the ancient city of York in the UK really the "first town of chocolate"?

Are you eating candy?  Well according to the folks in the US capitol, it might be suspicious.

Buy a box of Girl Scout cookies for the troops overseas... Hey wait, I'm overseas, and I'd love some Girl Scout cookies.

Consumers Are Confident...

Consumers are confident that the food they buy will not poison them.  In fact, according to this article, consumer are more confident in the safety of their food than they have been in seven years.  This doesn't sound like the set up for a huge disaster... does it?

Americans Are Not Free To Enjoy Kinder Eggs

Most people assume that the USA must have the greatest selection of candy treats in the whole world.  You'd imagine this because frankly they consume a whole lot of stuff, and people who make candy often see the US market as the holy grail of selling.  What few people know is that Kinder Eggs (one of the greatest candy/prize treats ever made) are in fact illegal in the US.  According to the government the little toys inside the treats can be a choking hazard, so no one gets them... ever.  The article bellow gives some fine examples of how much of a problem this is with the folks at the border.

Who Doesn't Want a Safer Peanut?

I have to be honest, I always worry about food contamination and food illness. Sure I try lots of foods from all over the world, but I know one day I'm going to get hit hard and get really sick. The problem is I'm never sure where it'll come from and each time I read about a food recall in the candy world I do some deep thinking and figure out if I've eaten or have anything that could make me sick.

Save a Life, Carry Chocolate Covered Marshmallow

Even from my point of view (a guy who loves candy more than most) I must say it's pretty strange to read a story about how a tea salesmen saved a womans life with chocolate covered marshmallows. But who am I to argue with that logic, I think I'm going to start carrying them around with me all of the time.

Corn Syrup

I'm starting to get frustrated with all of the conflicting information about corn syrup. Some say it's the worst thing in the world you can put in your body, others say it's a reasonable form of inexpensive sugar. This kind of debate makes me crazy.

Dam You E. coli!

New studies are saying that flour can now be added to the list of items that can carry e. coli. This is not good because when that stuff spreads it can make lots of people sick and when it's found in common ingredients it means there are higher risks.

Eating While You Drive

Over the last year or so I've learned that some countries find it to be socially irresponsible to eat snacks behind the wheel. I'm not sure how I feel about this idea, I mean road trips are all about snacking, but I can see the danger in eating while driving. Wonder if they'll ever be a law about this in North America?

Some People Don't Understand How Important Labels Are

Kroger grocery store has apparently recalled a bunch of ice cream because the type of nut listed is in fact incorrect. Now I'm sure that the folks at this store have some good ideas of what they'll do with the perfectly fine contents of these mislabeled ice cream tubs... My address if available upon request.

New Peanuts Are Good Peanuts

Apparently they're developing peanuts that don't affect people with allergies. I guess this is a good idea, as long as it doesn't affect the taste or cause strange mutations for future generations. I doubt the later but the first point is a concern.

Candy Technology Is Cool

This article isn't just on "candy" technology, but it is about food technology. More importantly it's an article about putting crazy ramps, conveyor belts and buckets into the workplace. In my mind the average job does not have enough of these contraptions and it's about time that changed.

Cotton Candy Vending Machines

This idea sound like it could be the greatest invention ever made, or the best set up for a spectacular injury/tragedy. All I know is when I ask if I can try to make my own cotton candy at stores or at the fair I'm often given many excuses as to why not, and many sound dangerous.
