Chocolate Truffles or Chocolate Covered Nuts and Fruit

I just read this article about a new candy company in Vermont that focuses on chocolate covered nuts and fruit instead of the classic truffles. The strange thing about this article is that it says that the chocolate truffle is a more North American/European concept and chocolate covered fruit is more Asian(Middle East I would imagine). Now my experience has been that chocolate covered fruit is and has been fairly popular all over North America for a long time, and I never really thought of it as an Asian idea. The truffle I might argue is a European creation but covering things in chocolate is pretty much a global phenomenon.
