Friday Candy Video
at
12:00 PM
This is a pretty sweet commercial all about how a simple gum wrapper can give you some fond childhood memories. I can actually relate to this commercial, because when I was a kid, my dad used to make boats out of our old paper potato chip bags. We used to go to the local canal and float them down the current, running along the banks to keep up with our salty chip boats. Good times.

I Love a Good Review!
at
3:00 PM
I don't always love to give good reviews, but I'm always flattered when someone has nice things to say about this site. Amanda had kind words about us on "World Start", and I'm so honored. I'm also a little worried that she gave such high praises to Candy Critic's navigability because we're working on a huge overhaul right now. Well thank you Amanda for the kind words, and I hope our new look and function works for you.

Candy Art - Unreal Rolled Hard Candy
at
2:00 PM
I came across these great pieces of edible hard candy art. I'm always impressed that the detail people can get out of hard candy, and I can appreciate the skill it takes to get such detail.
What blows me away most of all is the fact that these images aren't abstract. I'm fairly familiar with the process of making this kind of treat, but I can't wrap my mind around how you create the pattern to make an understandable image.
For those that doubt that candy making is an art, these treats should really change your mind on the subject.
Check out some more of these amazing treats here.

Places To Get Valentines Treats In Rochester
at
4:17 PM
Here's a quick list of places to pick up last minute treats in Rochester. Fortunately the treats look and sound good enough that the person you're buying them for should have no clue that you waited till the last minute.

Maltesers For A Good Cause
at
3:58 PM
I always like it when candy companies decide to do some good, and I particularly like it when they make it fun for their fans as well. Maltesers has a campaign to raise awareness for Comic Relief, and they want you to "raise your Malteser".

You Will More Likely Buy A Chocolate Bar For a Good Cause
at
10:37 AM
According to "statistics people", you will go out of your way and pay more for a candy if you think it's going to a good cause. That tells me that people are generally trying to be really good to their fellow man, and that makes me happy. The only thing about this that makes me sad is the number of scammers I've seen playing on this emotion in people. For example, I know of one scam where companies will put stickers on their gumball machines saying that a portion of the profits from that machine go to charity. The thing is a portion does go to charity, the problem is that it's a small one time payment and not a percentage of the sales from that machine.

Young Girl Helps Candy Maker in Guatemala
at
2:52 PM
A young girl in Andover (Kansas?) heard about a group of women in Guatemala that needed help with their chocolate business. They wanted to start producing chocolates on their own instead of just exporting the beans to other countries, which is often what happens in Guatemala. The problem is this kind of business is not easy to start, financially. So the young girl contacted them to find out what they needed. She then helped them out more than they could possibly imagine.

A Little History About War, Candy, And Goodwill
at
2:32 PM
Apparently the idea of giving treats to people living in war torn countries is nothing new. In this article a retired (90 year old) US airmen explains how he dropped packages of candy during the second world war in order to help those in need get a bit of a pep up. Today the military still gives out treats to soldiers for distribution to locals and includes treats in relief packages as well. Some question if this is a good idea and really worth the time and effort, but I wonder if these people could live with only food an no happiness.

Gum Art
at
11:21 AM
I've heard and even seen some people make some pretty amazing art using bubble gum. However this new twist takes mess that gum leaves all over the street and makes it into something pretty. A British artist has started to turn the little black spots left by pre-chewed gum into small canvases for his art. It would be better if no one left gum on the street and kept things clean, however this is a great way to deal with the problem.

I've Made a Mistake
at
6:40 PM
Yesterday I posted a blog about how parents should deal with Halloween treats this year. In that blog post I mentioned that one of the suggestions of giving the candy to charity was silly, I officially change that. I just came across an article with a truly wonderful way to donate any candy this year. Read it, learn from it, and maybe start a candy food drive for those overseas right now.

Candy For a Good Cause
at
1:51 PM
I love it when candy goes out and supports a good cause. I particularly like it when they support the cause not by asking for donations but giving away a bit of their profit. Some candy companies do this all of the time, and that's great. Not to toot my own horn, but at our other site (bewarethecheese.com) every time we do an art show a portion of our greeting card sales goes to a local charity.

NICE Acronym
at
8:54 AM
I just got this article from Reuters about a group that wants to ban high salt and fatty foods in the UK. I can't say that I agree with their idea, most likely because I run a web site filled with these kinds of snacks. The only reason I posted this at all was because this group called "The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence" has decided that their name should be turned into the acronym "NICE". I'm sure they know a lot about healthy foods, but they may want to research how acronyms work.

I'm for it. Basically according to this article you can buy two bars at any Harry and David's store, you get one, and so does a soldier overseas. Good deal.

Is My Mother Contacting Candy Companies?
at
4:59 PM
I say this because this year more than any other I've been getting e-mails about mothers day candy deals.

The folks at Sucre sent me a link to this nice little box of chocolate, a perfect gift for mom.

M&Ms are also celebrating with personalized M&Ms with greeting and pictures of mom.
