Cool Cakes

One of the new treats I’ve discovered here in Japan isn’t actually from Japan in the first place. It’s a round cake known as Baumkuchen. The cake itself is absolutely huge; I’ve seen them several feet long and with the diameter of a small car wheel. The thing is you don’t get the whole thing, most of the time their cut into rings and then cut into slices. You can either but a whole ring or just a slice of a ring.
Either way it’s a pretty tasty and interesting cake. It looks like a strange round layer cake with really thin layers. The thing I can’t figure out is why they rotate them on these giant spits at the stores. Are they made on these, does it have something to do with glazing them? The mystery continues.
