Visit a Congressman (or Woman) and Get Some Free Treats

According to this article in the New York Times, when you visit a Capital Hill (in the US) many of the offices are filled with free treats.  Many of the representatives stock their reception with treats that represent their district, including sweet treats.  The photo from this article has sold me enough to want to take a tour.

Candy Fashion Show

I love it when candy and fashion mix, I'm not saying it always works, I'm just saying that I love the attempt.  The "Washingtonian"(always wondered what you call someone from Washington) has a fun article about candy makers and designers working the runway.  The slideshow is particularly interesting.

Washington DC has Chocolate Tours

If given the choice between touring the White House or going on a chocolate tour, I'd most likely pick the chocolate tour.  The only reason I'd consider going to the White House instead is if I was guaranteed a couple of bags of White House M&Ms.

Let The People Decide What Should Be Taxed

Here's a perfect example of cooler head prevailing.  In Washington state the government wanted to put a tax on soda and candy treats.  Then an election happened and they put the idea to a vote and the people of Washington thought it wasn't a good idea and voted the tax down.  The wise people of Washington state understand that this tax doesn't make any sense and there has to be another way to deal with obesity and health problems.

I'm Not The Only One That Doesn't Understand Candy Tax

It appears that no one really understands the candy tax system. More importantly no one seems to be able to define what is candy and what is not. Here at Candy Critic we have probably the most loose definition of candy ever, and it gets us some slack. I'd love to contribute into defining candy for the US federal government but frankly that might be a conflict of interest since I'm generally opposed to the idea of taxing candy over other foods.

Battle Over Soda Tax Goes To...

Although the battle is not over there seems to be a push towards getting rid of the tax in Washington state. There is an aggressive campaign to eliminate the tax and they're should be a vote on it this November. Strangely enough I'm 0k with taxing food and drinks, I just think the tax has to be fair, and the money has to go towards real working initiatives to eliminate obesity.

A Good Question

The article bellow is simply a look at the new candy tax in Washington state. However the question the title brings up is really interesting, "Is candy really food?" I consider myself a food critic, so I'd have to say yes, however I can see the argument against this idea as well.

The White House Pastry Chef is Not Making Many Sweets Right Now

Apparently because of Michelle Obama's new healthy eating campaign the White House has cut down the types of sweet treats being offered. The Pastry Chef has changed some of his roles and is really happy with the new set up. I'm glad that he's managed to adapt but I would also like to extend an offer to him. If he ever gets a hankering to make some crazy fun sweet treats he's more than welcome to send them my way as I'm always happy to except anything that he might make.

Seattle Candy Tax

Well it looks like Washington State is going to be paying a little bit more for their candy. It's nice to know that when the government over spends they take it out on people's little inexpensive indulgences, instead of maybe charging the people that got most places into the economic mess in the first place. But that's just my opinion.
