Is Yogurt Underrated?

While I've tasted a few yogurt flavoured treats in my day, it's not a flavour that you really see everywhere. I think it's mostly found in the Asian candy world, with maybe a few European treats participating as well. The thing about yogurt flavoured candy is, it's hard to simulate yogurt and be super sweet at the same time. While yogurt can have some sweetness in it to cut down the sour, the sour itself is really what makes yogurt great. Too much sweet just turns it into a sweet cream. This is exactly what happened here, but that doesn't mean I don't want to see more candy companies attempting this unique flavour.

A Strange Little Coin

 I have a few theories as to why this strange coin shaped treat exists, but I don't know for sure. It's not the most pleasant thing I've ever eaten, so I can only assume it serves a purpose.

Yogurt or Not

I'm always a little surprised that more candy companies in Europe and North America don't use yogurt as a candy flavour. I think the only exception are yogurt covered raisins and occasionally peanuts. The thing about a yogurt flavour is the flexibility to work with other flavours, in particular fruity flavours. Adding this slightly tart flavour gives what could be an overly sweet flavour a wider audience.

Lots Going On, Including Today's New Review - Skittles "Dips"

This month has been a pretty intense month here at Candy Critic. First of all we're back in Canada. After a few years abroad, living in South East Asia, we're back home in our true north strong and free. Day 2 of Our Ritter Sport Review-a-Thon

Of the many treats that I've reviewed, from all over the world, Ritter Sport has the most awkward name to say, as a native English speaker.  The two words "Ritter" and "Sport" don't roll off the tongue together at all.  In fact I always find myself having to think a little harder when I say those two words together.  Stranger still is that although it is a German treat, they still use the word "sport", although according to my limited research there is no German word for sport.  Although I've also never seen a Ritter Sport bar that uses any kind of translation for the bar anywhere in the world.  I wonder if other languages find those two words together awkward to say as well.

Spreads - Yogurt

I just finished an art piece for bewarethecheese.com's fine art gallery "Senses". For this piece I had to photograph, and eventually eat more than 40 different spreads.  I've decided to post a little something about each spread that I sampled.

I've been getting a little bit of grief about spreading yogurt on bread and calling it a spread.  I understand why you might not think this works, but it does, and it has.  Many cultures have been using yogurt as an ingredient in spreads for many years, although they don't normally spread it on bread, they use pitas and wraps instead.  The thing is, after having sampled yogurt on bread I have to tell you that it actually tastes really good too.

Smarties + Yogurt =?

Earlier this year I discovered that Nutella and yogurt taste really great together. Although I've always enjoyed yogurt with sweet things, like jam and honey, I never really made the connection between yogurt and sweet treats.  As it turns out Nestle already had a plan to take my mixing of sweet treats and yogurt to a new level.

What we have here is vanilla yogurt with a handful of mini Smarties (the British/Canadian kind). When I first saw this snack I thought it might have been a pudding treat and I figured the addition of Smarties seemed pretty normal.  Once I figured out that it was yogurt I was pretty amazed at the creativity and bravery of Nestle to put this snack on the market.

The packaging was also really creative as well.  With a nice crease built into the divider of the two container, all you have to do is tip the Smarties side and they pour into the yogurt.  Fortunately I didn't get this mixed up because that would have been a pretty bad mess.

Other than the creativity of mixing yogurt with candy, the texture of this treat was really great as well.  Smooth cool yogurt with crunchy Smarties was really great texture.  I don't think chocolate alone would have given the same texture and it probably would have melted as soon as it hit the yogurt.

Not that the M&Ms didn't melt, in fact after a few minutes I had streaks of colour running all through my yogurt. Although I think the candy shell managed to hold on long enough for me to eat the whole container of yogurt.  The only thing that I might change in this treat is the sweetness of the yogurt.  Maybe taking down the sweet vanilla flavour might have given the yogurt a better contrast to the M&Ms.

Yogurt Instead of Ice Cream

A new dessert place has opened up in Athens and I think it's one of those brilliant ideas that I'm suprised hasn't been around for a long time already.  The place is called "Fresko", and their specialty is Greek yogurt.  Right now, all over Athens, you can find gelato and ice cream places, but as far as I know this is the only yogurt place.  Sure ice cream is great, but most of these places aren't that different or better than one another.  More importantly, although Greek ice cream is tasty, it's not really a great representation of the country.

Fresko takes something that is truly Greek and gives it a tourist/modern twist.  The best way to describe this place is to say it's like an ice cream sundae bar, but with yogurt instead.  They have several varieties of yogurt, to choose from, I went with the tradition Greek yogurt and it was spectacular.  If you've never tried Greek yogurt in Greece, you're in for a pleasant surprise.

The topping slection is also worth note.  They have several different types of honey, preserved fruits, nuts, and a few sweet choices as well.  I suggest the pine honey and walnuts.

If you want to sample a real Greek food experience, yogurt is a must.  Fresko allows you to taste the high quality yogurt, with traditional flavours, but in a modern way.

The Best Way to Eat Chocolate Hazelnut Spread Part 3 In Yogurt

All this week we will be presenting you 5 great ways to enjoy your chocolate hazelnut spread fix.  Sure I could have simply said "5 great ways to enjoy your Nutella fix", but there are so many more brands of this stuff and I figured this would be a little more fair.  For the most part people only really think about eating this stuff spread on bread, or sometimes in a crepe, but I've discovered some other great places to smear this stuff.

This tip on enjoying your chocolate hazelnut spread is a creation based on our adventures here in Greece.  Although there is some controversy in this house about who came up with it, there is no controversy about how good it is.  Best of all it makes for a great desert as well as a snack.

In this case I'm talking about adding a little chocolate hazelnut spread to your yogurt.  Although I'm sure that it will work fine with just about any type of plain yogurt, Greek high fat strained yogurt is truly fantastic.  The very creamy texture and taste mix so well with the thick spread, and the bitter flavour of the yogurt balances well with the sweet from the spread.  One tip I would say if you make this at home is don't stir it too much.  Just fold the chocolate hazelnut spread into the yogurt so your left with beautiful swirls.

Germs and Food Health

So it's been discovered that certain germs are often found in leaner (non obese) people according to a study done between the EU and Africa. So I say it's a matter of time until we see a yogurt that features the "slimming germs of Africa".

Chocolate Yogurt

I've always wondered why more companies don't add chocolate to yogurt. The flavours are pretty much made for each other, and you could use fairly low fat/low sugar cocoa. The problem appears to be a technical one right now, but they're working on it.
