 I don't understand why I love this commercial, it's only slightly clever, but it makes me feel all warm and nostalgic. I love being a Canadian.

How Do You Like Your Coffee?

Until recently I forgot about this tag line for the Coffee Crisp bar.  I realise that the commercial is only so funny, but the tag line lasted a really long time.

Double Vision?

To me, this candy totally makes sense, but that's because I'm Canadian. While I'm not sure if this is the most Canadian candy ever made, I'm pretty sure it only makes sense if you are Canadian. To understand this bar you have to be familiar with a Coffee Crisp and Tim Horton's. To Canadians both of these things are very familiar, I would even say that these are every day foods in Canada. Some Canadians might not even realise that these are Canadian exclusives since they're so common in Canada.

It's Time To Think About Thickness - Coffee Crisp Thins

Since the conception of this website I have been obsessed with the size of candy. I think it's really fascinating when a candy company decides to make a treat larger, smaller, or in this case thinner. I always seem to over think the reasons a candy company would want to change their treats, and if they think it's an improvement. I'll be honest, there are very few treats that have improved themselves by changing their size or dimensions. While I understand there are some companies looking at improving the health benefits of their treats by changing the size, I often find that it doesn't always work. Mostly because more candy companies seem to sell these smaller versions of their treats in larger numbers per package.

It's Time For A New Episode Of In Hindsight, Today We Look At The Coffee Crisp

Canadian Candy List - Part 4 - Best Bar

Over the last few years I've been living away from my home country, Canada.  I've been traveling the world exploring all kinds of snack foods, junk foods, and sweets, but my heart is still in Canada.  I'm going to be back home for an extended period, and I've decided to compile various lists on the theme of Canadian candy and snacks.  Each week, for the next several weeks, I'll be posting a different list of Canadian candies I've reviewed in various categories.  Some of these treats may be available in other parts of the world, some are exclusive to the Great White North, but in my mind all of them are Canadian.

Chocolate bars are a global phenomenon.  In fact I often judge a countries ability to make sweet treats by the types of chocolate and candy bars I find in local store shelves.  Some places only sell the global brands, other countries have a huge collections of local bars.  Canada is truly split down the middle in this regard, you can get all of the big name brands in the stores (or many of them), but there are truly some pure Canadian chocolate bars that are well worth trying.

 This bar isn't really a classic Canadian bar, but it is one of the best bars that's ever found its way onto Canadian shelves.  Sadly, as you'll read more about in a future post, it's not longer available.

 Most kids that I know, myself included when I was a kid, don't really like Coffee Crisp bars.  However, as an adult, most people can't get enough of these.  This is the kind of chocolate bar that one could eat in a business meeting, and not get any stares.

 This bar will always have a soft spot in my heart.  It is my father's favorite sweet treat, so I always remember having them around.  To this day if I want to put a smile on his face, all I have to do is send him one of these, since he now lives in the USA.

I had about two years of my life when the Mr Big bar was my bar of choice.  There was something great about the texture, and the fact that it was called "Mr Big".

Of all of the Canadian bars on this list, the Oh Henry! bar is easily my favorite.  It's not only my favorite now, it's been my favorite bar for most of my life (excluding the two years I was into Mr Big).

Old Candy Critic Articles - Good idea or bad idea

I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog.  This week I look back at an article all about how I manage to get over the mental block that is candy I'm not thrilled about trying.

When I look at a bar, do I give it a chance? I try to. I try and look at every treat out in the world with open eyes and without pre-judging it, but that's not easy. There are certain things I just don't really like. One of the things you'll notice about this site is the lack of licorice. I'm not a big fan, so for the most part I figure why do I want to put myself through that. I also don't really like coconut, which explains the lack of "Almond Joy" or "Mounds" bars. I'm not saying my mind can't be changed, I've eaten licorice and coconut treats that I didn't mind. Sometimes my mind is changed completely and that's the biggest compliment you could give any treat.

So I can't ever say that I'm completely impartial when it comes to picking treats. Sometimes I see an idea and it just seems stupid. I'll scan through the candy counter and see things I just can't figure out. So how do I get over it? Well, that happens several ways. Sometimes it’s from people e-mailing me about a treat they really want me to try. Sometimes I can't think of anything else to eat. Sometimes I just want to challenge myself.

What I've done today is decided to try and show you an example of a good idea and a bad idea using two chocolate bars. One I think is a great idea, the other I'm not that thrilled about. I'll eat each one and let you know if I think the idea is still good or bad after eating the treat.

Kit Kat Caramel Chunk

Before I eat it:

This seems like a stupid idea. I like "Kit Kat", but adding caramel just seems like too much. I think these candy company's are just over working a simple idea by adding caramel to everything. Some bars work with caramel but I don't think this one will.

After I eat it:

I can't say I didn't like this bar, after all its a "Kit Kat", but what I can say is its not really that necessary. The caramel takes the flavour out of the "Kit Kat", and the chocolate takes away the caramel flavour. So I'm here with a strange textured chocolate bar. I like "Kit Kat", this new addition just takes away from a well-balanced bar that it already was.

Coffee Crisp Triple Mocha

Before I eat it:

This idea seems to make sense. Coffee and Mocha, it's really one in the same. It's something you'd find at your local coffee shop, a flavour that's been around for a long time and I'm surprised they didn't come out with this sooner.

After I eat it:

If I could describe this bar, I'd have to say that it’s like a regular "Coffee Crisp" but a little chocolatier. It's not bad, I couldn't tell you how much better it is than the old one but I think it’s a little different. The mocha is subtle enough or it works so well that I don't really notice the flavour that much. I'd eat it again if offered, but I don't think I'd crave it.
