Paris Treats

This is my first instalment of a series of blog posts where I’m going to talk about a recent trip I took to Europe. There were three stops on this trip and the first one I’m going to talk about is Paris. I have opinions about Paris, and I feel like they might be unpopular. The first thing to note is that I’ve visited Paris many times. The second thing to note is that my opinion of Paris does not reflect all of France. I’m not a huge fan of Paris in general. It’s not that I don’t like it at all, I just can’t seem to find the awe and power that others seem to find in this city. I’ve never really had a bad time in Paris and there are even some parts I really enjoy, but I’ve never been blown away either. Knowing this, here’s what I have to say about treats, junk food and candy in Paris.

I’ll start with the good. The desserts and bakeries in Paris are very good. I think I can safely say that in general, Paris bakeries are some of the best in the world. Overall just about anything you get in any Paris bakery will be very good. There may be some parts of the world that specialize in certain baked treats and desserts, and they might make that particular treat better, however Paris bakeries and desserts are overall better than most.

There are some exceptions to this of course, and I’ll get into that later, but I just love walking down a street in Paris and eating something with a light flaky crust and scattered with chocolate. Even the bread is just very good in most bakeries. I’ll even go out on a limb and say that the grocery store and convenience store baked goods are very good. Don’t get me wrong, the bakeries are better, but the level of baked goods in grocery stores is much better than most parts of the world.

The exception to this rule for me is some of the ultra fancy bakeries. While the small local bakeries in Paris are well worth the trip, I find that there’s a trend in Paris right now of making visually beautiful desserts. While these beautiful desserts aren’t bad, they’re not as good as the classics (in my opinion). Most of all I find that these beautiful desserts are a lot harder to get, and maybe not worth the effort. I saw several “fancy” bakeries and sweet shops with huge lines out front. I even saw a few that required reservations just to get in. What I’m saying is that the hype is not worth the result.

Finally I want to talk about candy and chocolate in Paris. I’ll say this first, Europe in general has some of the best candy and chocolate anywhere. However, I feel like Paris (and maybe even France) is not the best in Europe. I’d even go so far as to say that most French treats are not really worth it. The one thing worth noting is the fact that Paris does offer some great chocolate and even a few sweets, but if you look closer you’ll see that most of these are imported. There’s a great selection of Belgian, Swiss and German chocolate in Paris, but that doesn’t really count in my opinion. While Paris offers many of the classic and great candies and chocolates found in Europe, their own selection isn’t the best you’ll find in Europe.

As I said at the top of this post, I’ve never had a bad time in Paris, however, it’s never been one of my favourite places to visit Europe. I had some great meals, and some amazing baked goods, but I’m not a big fan of the fancy side of Paris when it comes to this. Candy and chocolate wise I have yet to find something that truly feels French, but I’m always happy to be proven wrong on this in the future if you disagree.

Truly Some Of The Most Beautiful Candy Art Ever

All this month I've been posting some funny and downright weird candy commercials from Japan. I didn't want to leave out the fact that Japanese hand made sweets and desserts are some of the most beautiful pieces of candy art in the world. This video is just one example, and best of all most of these beautiful creations taste amazing too.

Raw Dangerous Cookie Dough

I have a question for you, has raw cookie dough always been dangerous? I ask because I've been eating cookie dough for a long time. In fact I can't remember the first time I've ever tried it, and I can safely tell you that I don't think a year of my life has gone by without eating cookie dough. It just seems like in the last few years people have had to make special cookie dough for me to eat. When I was a kid, I would just eat the stuff right out of the bowl, or tube as the case may be. I never thought about raw eggs being dangerous, I guess I figured mixing it in a bowl made it safe?

The Package Matters

Whenever I review a candy, I never know if I should talk about the package. I do post a photo of the package with each review, but I wonder if I should talk about the way the package influences me. The honest truth is that package design has a great deal of influence on the candy I buy. More often than not I buy candy that I don't know anything about. At this point there are very few candies that I know about that I haven't tried. So when I'm faced with a wall of candy, the package is often the only thing I have to judge. This is even more true if I'm in a country where I can't read the language or the description of the candy in the package. This basically means that if you're showing a picture of a cow on your candy package, there better be something creamy inside... or maybe beefy?

Gummies Of Every Shape and Colour

I've always felt that the gummy is one of if not the best candy for creating fun designs. I feel like gummies can be just about any size, shape or colour. If you really think about it, I feel like you can make just about anything out of gummy. The reason I don't think you see more varieties of shapes and colours is that it's expensive to make your first batch of gummies. You really need industrial equipment to make gummies, small candy shops often stick with things like chocolate because they're easier to make in small quantities. Maybe some day the technology will start to allow small companies to make their own gummies, and maybe then we'll see some amazing gummy art.

This week's new review is okay, but not as creative as I'd hoped, but you can read more about it here.

I Make Marshmallows Awesome!

Marshmallows have always been on my list of treats that I don't always love. I think as an ingredient they can be good, but on their own I just don't get the appeal. Today I decided to try and figure out how I can change that and make marshmallows awesome. Spoilers, I figured it out.

Subtle Flavours Should Be Cherished

So as you may or may not know, there is a possibility that I have Covid right now (I don't know for sure as in Canada the only people that can be tested are vulnerable people and those working with vulnerable people). At this point my symptoms are mild and in general I'm still able to do almost everything I did before, except go outside. Today's candy review did remind me that some people lose their sense of taste. This makes me a little nervous because treats like these marshmallows require not only a basic sense of taste, but the ability to taste subtle flavours. I have set up a few fail safes if I was to ever get sick or lose my sense of taste (temporarily). I actually have many candy reviews done in advance that I can post at any time. While we live in crazy times, I always want to make sure you can read a new candy review each week.

Check out this subtly flavoured treat that I'm thankful that I'm able to taste.

Is Peanut Butter Overused?

This week's new candy review is of the Snickers "Creamy Peanut Butter". As far as I know there has already been another Snickers with peanut butter, and in fact I would argue that just about every single major candy company has produced at least one version of their treat with peanut butter. While I do enjoy peanut butter with chocolate, I feel like this ingredient is overused. More to the point, I feel like every candy companies figures that peanut butter will always work. This may be true, but judging by this review I think it's not. Peanut butter has a particular flavour and texture and it doesn't always work with everything, and even when it does "work" it has to be used properly. Peanut butter is not just an ingredient you can slap onto every single candy bar and guarantee a winner.

Find out why this week's featured candy doesn't work, even though it has peanut butter.

Simple Bars Can Be Original

I feel like the candy industry is obsessed with making super crazy fancy bars. I feel like this is their attempt to make original candy, but they do it by using too many ingredients or by using ingredients that are weird for the sake of being weird. I argue that you can use only a few ingredients, each of which being something you commonly find matched with each other, and still create an original bar. I feel like the people at E.Wedel understand this, particularly with this bar.

Time To Mix It Up

Over the years I've had a love/hate relationship with candy varieties. In the early creation of this site I was always disappointed when a candy company came out with a different version of a classic candy. Today I'm a little more hopeful and excited. I feel like candy companies have become better at creating different versions of their classic treats. I feel like in the past the variations would always be really simple, like slapping a bit of caramel on it, or making it dark instead of milk chocolate. Today these versions are much more sophisticated, and I give a lot of credit to the Kit Kat bar. Specifically the folks at Kit Kat Japan who broke the mold when it comes to changing up a classic.

Texture As A Variety

Today when we see different varieties of candies, the thing that's often the difference is the flavour. It's much more rare for candy companies to change the texture of their classic candies at all when they come out with a new variety. Even more rare is candy companies coming out with a new variety of their classic treats and the only real difference is the texture. The folks at Werther's did just that, and it worked pretty well.

This Week I'm Eating All The Jolly Ranchers

Maybe not every single Jolly Rancher that's ever existed, probably not even ever flavour that's available right now. I find that here in Canada it's tough to get your hands on any flavours other than the classics. Since I noticed that the lack of Jolly Rancher reviews was a big hole in my candy review collection, I figured the least I could do was fill it with as many of the classic flavours as I could find. I will warn you *spoilers*, one Jolly Rancher flavour is one of my favourite hard candies, another is one of my least favourite.

Is Cookies and Cream Just White Chocolate?

I have a strange relationship with cookies and cream treats. More often than not I really like them, but I can't really figure them out. If someone asked me to describe cookies and cream chocolate treats, I would likely say that they're like a white chocolate bar with cookie bits, only creamier. I feel like that's a good description, but I'm not sure technically how accurate that is. I don't know how they make cookies and cream chocolate, but each time I bite into a treat made with it, I wonder.

Click here to check out my latest review that happens to be cookies and cream themed.
