Mango Might Be The Perfect Gummy Flavour

If we're just talking authenticity to the original subject matter, I think mangoes might be the best gummy flavour of all. If you think about the other fruit flavours commonly used in gummies, the fruit's original texture and often colour almost never match their gummy flavoured treat. However, mangoes are pretty squishy, and when they're freshly cut they kind of look like they could be made of gummy too. It's not a perfect match, but it's remarkably close. The only problem you have is that most mango gummies don't actually taste like gummies, but when they do it's magical.

Just A Gummy Worm?!!

It's funny how worms have become so connected to gummy candy. I guess it makes sense since worms are kind of squishy, and the idea of eating them is a little gross, but cool. I used to believe that all gummy worms where basically the same design, and at most had a different flavour (good or bad). However, as I taste more and more candies in this world, I'm learning that there are actually some very different interpretations of gummy worms out there. Some are better than others, but I really appreciate the effort in making something new with a classic treat.

Does Your Gummy Have A Peel

The latest trend in gummy candy seems to be the idea that you can peel them. The concept is that each gummy candy is made with two different textures of gummy. The outside is a more chewy, durable gummy, while the inside is a soft a squishy gummy. Each of these gummies (so far) are shaped like different fruit that one might peel, like grapes or bananas. As a concept I'm a huge fan of this trend, it's not only clever, but thematically correct (so far). The actual peeling of these candies have proven to be a bit more challenging than I originally expected, but that could improve as technology gets better. The thing I'm looking forward to is the first creative gummy candy company that takes this trend and moves it out of peeling fruit. I feel like there's great promise for a really creepy Halloween candy here.

Feeling the Peeling

I really have mixed feelings about the peeling gummy trend. For those out of the loop, over the last few years there's been a trend of making gummy candy that you can peel. The concept is that you get a piece of fruit that often (but not always) has a peel, and make it using two different textures of gummy candy. The outside is often a fairly durable gummy while the centre is often very soft. I've often found that the soft gummy centre is a little too squishy and can make peeling difficult. In the case of these passion fruit gummies it was even worse, but it's slightly possible that it's supposed to be that way.

Is There a Gummy Shape That Wont Work?

I was thinking about this while writing this review, is there any shape that just wouldn't work as a gummy? I feel like the candy world is trying to find out as you can find gummies in so many different shapes. I've seen gummies come in everything from fruit, to animals, to... well obscene shapes. I've also seen gummies that are tiny and gummies that are huge. I just can't think of any instance where a gummy's shape didn't work. Sure some are a little boring, but they still kind of work. Can you think of any particular shape that just wouldn't work for a gummy?

What's In A Name

I've never really given a great deal of thought about the names of treats until I got this bag of gummy candies. For some reason "Frogs Alive" sounded really dark. I think if you put it in the context of "I'm eating Frogs Alive", you might see where I'm coming from. This has made me think about other treat names, and how dark, weird or just wrong they might be. Nerds is a great example of just that, but I'm sure there are more. The problem is that many treat names become common place no matter how weird they actually are. Can you think of any treat or candy names that are just weird?

Not A Fan Of Marshmallows

There are a few categories of treats that I'm not a huge fan, black licorice, spicy treats and marshmallows are probably at the top of my list. With licorice and even spicy treats I've been trying to ease my way into tolerating them. I've sampled more and more licorice and spicy treats in order to attempt to grow to like them. With marshmallows on the other hand I've decided to try and seek out marshmallows that I like. So instead of eating more marshmallows to gain an appreciation, I'm trying to find out if anyone makes an already great marshmallow. I guess I feel like there's hope out there.

Underrated?

I mentioned this several times in my latest candy review, but I just wanted to say it again, black current is probably one of the most underrated candy flavours in the world. I don't think I've ever had a bad black current candy, and yet it's not a common flavour in the candy world. There are a few countries and candy makers that use it, but I feel like it should be a standard. I also want to see it used with other sweet treats, like cola, slushies and maybe even cakes.

Jellies From Asia

Whenever I write a new review, probably one of the hardest parts is trying to figure out what category it might fit into. While it's not always hard, in cases like this latest featured review it can be very challenging. I do have a category that's simply called "unique", but I try my hardest not to put any reviews into that category as it seems like a cheat. In the case of these Asian jelly candies, I figured lumping them in with gummies would be okay.

Best Gummy Ever?

The fact that there are so many gummy candies out there in the world makes it really hard to pick one that is better than another. I think we could all point out some of the worst gummies in the world, but the best depends greatly on what you like in a gummy candy. I have opinions on the subject, but I think I can also say that I've tasted a lot of gummy candies, so maybe my opinion matters? Probably not.

Gummy... Bears?

Historically the gummy bear shape is actually fairly important. It was after all the first shape ever manufactured as a gummy, based on performing bears on the streets of Germany. It is however very odd that this shape of gummy remains one of the most popular. While Haribo is the first to make this shape of gummy, they're certainly not the only one anymore. Even stranger is the fact that we don't see any other candies made in this shape. It would even be odd to see a chocolate or a hard candy in the shape of a small bear, but a gummy makes perfect sense.

The Name Is Important

When I first started this site, for many years I refused to take anything on the package into account. I wanted to be a purist and only look at the candy in the package. Then I realized that the package is actually an important part of any treat that you buy. It sets up expectations and most importantly makes promises. More recently I take great care to note if a candy makes good on the promises that are offered on the package. I've even been slightly upset when candy companies lie on their package (they do it more than you might think). I will admit however that looking at the package for insight is much more challenging when buying candies from countries where I can't read the language.

Candy As A Gimmick

The line between a good candy concept and a lame candy gimmick can be very difficult to understand sometimes. Sometimes a treat has a fun, unique concept that can make a treat really fun to eat. Other times can have a unique concept that actually makes it harder to enjoy. The concept might be good on paper, but the reality is that the treat is no longer fun to eat. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't have to actually taste better, but it has to be fun, but I guess that's another difficult concept to explain.

Creative Gummy Bugs

I feel like the most common use for gummies is bugs, insects and creepy crawlies. I haven't done any kind of research into this subject, but I don't think there's a single candy store in the world that doesn't offer some kind of insect or creepy crawly type of gummy. The thing about this kind of treat is since so many companies make them, it's hard to find anyone making this kind of gummy in a creative way. For the most part it's gummy worms and occasionally some kind of goo filled bug. Is it time for candy companies to stop making this kind of treat, or is it just time for them to think outside the box a little bit.

A Very Confusing Puzzle

I really like interactive candy. Interactive candy is something that you not only eat, but also provides you with some kind of other activity. In the case of this latest review, it could be a puzzle, but it can also be a game or a toy as well. The problem I find with many of these interactive candies is that they often don't have instructions on how to use them. While some are fairly obvious, when you're given a container filled with coloured puzzle pieces and nothing else, it's not so clear.

Halloween Candy, But Not For Trick Or Treaters

I've been thinking a lot about this lately, but there are really two categories of Halloween candy. There are those candies that are themed for Halloween, and those candies that you're likely to receive on Halloween.  There are a few candies that cross both lines, but there are many that don't. These gummies (my latest Halloween candy review) for example are very Halloween themed, but I don't think I've ever seen or received a gummy like this for Halloween ever. I'll be honest, if it was between these and a peanut butter cup, I'd probably prefer to get the peanut butter cup, even though it's not Halloween themed at all.

Gummy Shape Problem

I've always believed that you can make a gummy into any shape or size. I've never before thought about whether or not you should. Today's new review features a gummy in a shape that felt really weird to eat, mentally. The problem is they pulled it off very well. Eating a soft animal paw in gummy form is weird, not hating it is even weirder.

A New Review, Late Because of Christmas

There are two reasons this new review is a day late. The first is that I wasn't sure if I should post a new review right on Christmas day. It seemed a little wrong, and I wanted my Christmas candy review to stay on the top of the page for as long as possible. The other reason is because it's tradition at our house to lay around on Christmas day in your pajamas doing almost nothing. With the random reasons I put into my head, and my love of being lazy, it was easy to decide to push the review back a day.  Fortunately I think this review was well worth waiting for.

Gummy Cars Should Be Fun

 There are a remarkable number of car shaped gummies, but few of them offer what people who like cars really want, variety. From memory, I can't think of any car themed gummy candies that came in a larger variety of shapes. I think 3 is the most shapes I've ever seen, and many like this week's new review offer just one. It's really odd because there are so many different shaped cars out there in the world, but no one seems to be taking advantage of that very fact.
