The Name Is Important

When I first started this site, for many years I refused to take anything on the package into account. I wanted to be a purist and only look at the candy in the package. Then I realized that the package is actually an important part of any treat that you buy. It sets up expectations and most importantly makes promises. More recently I take great care to note if a candy makes good on the promises that are offered on the package. I've even been slightly upset when candy companies lie on their package (they do it more than you might think). I will admit however that looking at the package for insight is much more challenging when buying candies from countries where I can't read the language.

8 Days Of UK Treats - Day 2

Most people, outside of the UK, associate chocolate with British treats.  Cadbury, Rowntree, Thornton's and Fry's seem to dominate the market, and more notably their chocolate creations.  While I can't argue that the UK has some of the best chocolate bars in the world, I can tell you that they also have some of the best non-chocolate treats as well.  Non-chocolate treats in the UK tend to be simple flavoured, but creatively made.  Often (although not in the case of these gummies) flavour is important, but it has to be a bold flavour.  It's well worth sampling some non-chocolate treats if you ever go on a candy excursion to the UK, you're bound to find some really fun treats.

Classic/Creative Candy Advertising

When I look at this advertisement I think of two things.  First of all I think about what a mess it would be to pour a bunch of juice into a box.  Then I wonder, could I make my own fruit gums?  I wonder what it takes?

Thursday's Candy Links

Two things I always worry about when I eat candy, my diet and my teeth, now it looks like I might only have one.

Happy Birthday Rowntree, you don't look a day over 149.

I'd always known that Kinder Eggs are illegal in the United States, but I didn't know that the fines could go as high as $2,500 per egg.

The Olympics is a great way for companies to promote their candy, but only a few are "official" sponsors.

Classic/Creative Candy Advertising - What Ever Happened To Rowntree's?

On my recent trip to London, I started to feel really nostalgic about Rowntree's products.  We used to have them in Canada but they got bought up by Nestle and the name was pretty much dropped.  In the UK, the labels still say Rowntree's and that always puts a smile on my face.
