Candy In The Media

All photos copyright the Museum of Brands, Packaging, and Advertising.
Around the world there are many museums and museum exhibits dedicated to candy.  Most of these museums focus on chocolate, but there are a few that diversify.  Many candy museums are also found at the end of factory tours at various candy factories, and those obviously focus on one particular brand.  It's rare to come across a museum, or even a museum exhibit, that shows off a diversity of brands and types of candy.  One of the best candy themed museum exhibit that I've ever come across can be found at the Museum of Brands, Packaging, and Advertising in London England.

I've never seen such a huge collection of candy packages in my entire life. They have packages dating back to Victorian England, all the way to modern packages of today.  The museum is set out in chronological order and contains packages and branding for all kinds of products, but their candy collection is superb.  There are a few sections dedicated to candy, however there are a few candies also spread around in other sections as well.  Surprisingly some of the packages aren't empty, and while I wouldn't want to eat these ancient candies, it's pretty amazing to see.

The only downfall is that that you don't really find a huge range of candy packages from outside of UK (and to some extent Europe).  It's not really that big a deal because the UK has been one of the biggest candy innovator's since the Victorian era, and this is a prime example of just how much they've given us.  I could not recommend a museum more than the Museum of Brands, Packaging, and Advertising.  It's a great place for any candy history buff, and even has plenty to see for those without a sweet tooth.

I'm not sure if you could possibly find a more un-appealing photograph of a yummy Dairy Queen strawberry sundae.  I know that this is likely what most Dairy Queen sundaes look like, particularly when your Dairy Queen maker is a part time student on their first job.  But what about a little glamour in advertising, why not spruce it up a bit to make me slightly interested in getting a strawberry sundae?

I keep forgetting that one of the big angles of Baskin-Robbin's ice cream is that they sell 31 different flavours of ice cream.  I know that they have a lot of flavours, and I know my favorite is Gold Medal Ribbon, but I can't say that I've ever counted the flavours at any Baskin-Robbin's location.  I think this summer when I'm back in North America, I may give this a try.

I'd never thought about putting Reese's Peanut Butter Cups in the freezer.  Has anyone tried this out yet, is it worth trying out?

M&M's were the perfect treat to ship overseas in wartime.  They're fairly durable, taste great, and can be divided into small portions.  It's a little strange to make this a selling point for these candies, but I guess that was a different time.

Here's a clever idea I'm surprised we don't see more often today. Why not advertise your candy on a billboard within your advertisement.  It's almost as if you're getting two ads for the price of one.

Until seeing this cool Eat-More ruler, I'd never given much thought about how strange the name "Eat-More" really is.  Seeing it out of context the name is more like a bad slogan for a buffet than the name of a classic Canadian candy bar.  That's the strange thing about candy and snack promotions that are placed in strange places, it sometimes disconnects from the treat itself and lets you look at the slogan or name of the treat from a new perspective.

I have a soft spot in my heart for minimalist advertising.  When I worked in the advertising industry, I really loved to create this stuff, only I always felt like I was ripping off the client.  It's not that I didn't see the merit in simple art, I just worried that other people didn't.

Since this week we're starting our list of classic candy films, I thought I'd look at an advertisement featuring two of the most candy related films ever made.  We'll they're sort of two films, really they're just one... it's a little complicated.  I'll have more about this next week when I feature both of these movies on our Cool Candy Thing post.  For now just enjoy the retro cool of the old Willy Wonka poster, and the artsy weird of the current one.

The statement on this advertisement is true, but only before I've started to eat any popcorn.  Popcorn is one of those snacks that when you smell it, and when you know you're only minutes away from enjoying it, something in the back of your mind is saying that you can eat unlimited amounts of it.  Then, after about 5 handfuls of popcorn my mind changes, suddenly it was the dumbest idea ever to get the super large popcorn.

Have I ever mentioned one of the most ridiculous advertising campaigns in the history of candy?  I first discovered this campaign while traveling through Australia.  I saw a giant poster advertising a rivalry between the left and the right Twix bar.  It reminded me of a campaign that Shreddies once put out where they had people vote on their favorite shape, squares or diamonds.  These campaigns are designed to be so silly that they're clever, but I'm not sure if they are.

All this week we're posting M&Ms facts on Snack Facts (check it out on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter), and I thought I would search out any M&Ms advertising for today's post.  What I came up with was amazing.  I'm not certain that this ad is real, in fact I'm pretty sure it's not, but it is really amazing.  Who would have thought that the red M&M was a communist.

If anybody knows what the text on this advertisement says, I'd be very interested to know.  Is it something about being extra manly, or does it have something to do with Snickers being distracting?  While I do enjoy a Snickers bar, I can't say that it's ever made me feel brave enough to take a soccer ball to the groin.

As I've mentioned before, I'll be leaving Greece in the near future, off for new adventures.  I've decided that before I leave I must make sure I explore (review) every single Greek treat that I may have overlooked.  The one brand that I've really overlooked is ION.  It's a chocolate bar company here in Greece that produces some really great bars.  So I've been cleaning up the candy shelves, and before I go, I'm going to review several of ION's tasty treats.

I've never really thought of Almond Joy or Mounds as a Hawaiian candy. Although Peter Paul, the company that makes Almond Joy and Mounds started in Connecticut, I can see that the flavours they produce have a Hawaiian feel to them.  With coconuts and almonds being flavours one associates with the Hawaiian islands, it makes sense to sell them as tropical/exotic treats.

There's something about a really tall slice of cake that makes my mouth water.  For some reason, even a really wide slice of cake isn't as appealing as a really tall slice of cake.

I generally don't like watermelon flavoured anything.  I find that not one candy company has every managed to duplicate the texture and flavour that you get when you bite into a slice of watermelon.  I'm sure that this has mainly to do with the texture over the flavour, as many companies that have attempted to make a tasty watermelon and failed, have created some of the best flavours with other products.  Jelly Belly is a great example of this.  Their buttered popcorn Jelly Belly is fantastic, as are a few of their strange flavours like baby powder and grass.  Yet I can't stand watermelon Jelly Bellies.
