More Bit Cups Than Little Cups?

I'm starting to feel like Reese's has been releasing more variations of their Big Cups than the regular sized peanut butter cups. My sense is that the large cups work better for adding extra flavours and ingredients. It's a shame though because I think I prefer the regular cups over the big cups, at least on their own. I also find that with the large format, and the ability to put just about anything inside the cups, they might go off the rails sometime soon. It seems like a matter of time until we have pickle cups.

Check out my latest Big Cup review.

Simple Is Scary

I love the simplicity of this Reese's Peanut Butter Cup commercial so much.

Reese's Puffs Are Popular

I've always felt like Reese's Puffs cereal was a gimmick idea that actually turned into something many people love. Now it's a staple on the store shelves. Who would have thought?

Reese's Advice

I feel like some of this advice may not be great. In particular this first commercial should have fine print mentioning how many eggs you might have to clean off your house.

Why Do Cups Work So Well

While writing this review a thought came across my mind, why does the cup work so well with peanut butter and chocolate? More importantly, why don't more companies make treats in a cup shape? I feel like a Snickers or Oh Henry cup would be pretty tasty and unique. You might even try to make some gummy cups? It's just really weird how one company makes almost all of the cup shaped treats, and it's almost always just peanut butter and chocolate.

A Weird Christmas Review

Many of you out there would probably argue that this Reese's Peanut Butter Cup has nothing to do with Christmas at all, and I'd agree. I don't see how the addition of peanut brittle makes a peanut butter cup holiday themed. The thing is, I found it at a Target in the Christmas section, in a Christmas display, and it has all kinds of green decorations all around it. Everything points to the idea that this peanut brittle peanut butter cup was meant to be sold at Christmas, except for the fact that as far as I know peanut brittle has no connection to Christmas at all.

Check out this very non-Christmas, Christmas review.

It's Pre-Halloween Week!

I love the week before Halloween, almost as much as I love the week after Halloween. I love the week before Halloween because everyone is getting into the spirit of the season, picking out their costumes, and buying all kinds of fund treats to give out to their neighbours. I love the week after Halloween because all of the candy that didn't sell is on sale.

A Cup Full Of Chips

I feel like the trend of sweet and savoury is starting to become completely normal. When I was a kid the idea of mixing sweet and savoury was something totally new. There were only a few salty snacks that you would see in a sweet form, and almost every time you'd see them the salt would be removed. Things like popcorn and peanuts would be in both, but you'd almost never find salty popcorn or salted peanuts with anything sweet. I feel like chocolate covered pretzels and potato chips were the first to cross over. Then, as people got used to it, these treats became less special and more mainstream. Today I feel like there's enough sweet and salty treats out there that I should dedicate and entire section of candycritic.org to this combination of flavours.

Chocolate And Peanut Butter

I really miss the old Reese's Peanut Butter Cup commercials that always involved some person accidentally sticking a bar of chocolate into someone else's peanut butter.

A Little Love For Valentine's Day

I feel like Valentine's Day is the top candy heavy holiday that people don't really like. I feel like people crap on Valentine's Day because they feel like it makes people miserable, instead of making them happy. I also kind of agree with them. The thing is, per-capita, I feel like Valentine's Day produces the best candy, better than any other holiday. The main ingredient in this holiday seems to be chocolate, followed by cinnamon. These are two flavours I can get behind %100. I also feel like Valentine's Day is the day to treat yourself to something a little bit fancy, like a nice box of fine chocolates. While I mostly agree that Valentine's Day is more stress than fun, I really like the candy.

I'm Not Sure Why These Are So Popular

I've written on this blog a number of times about classic candies that I haven't reviewed. The most common reason I don't review classic treats is that I actually forget about them. They've become such a staple in my mind that I don't even think about them. Sometimes I just assume I've already written a review and never bother to actually write the review. These Reese's Pieces fall into a different category altogether.

I don't really love Reese's Pieces, there I've said it. I don't hate them, but it's very rarely that I'll seek them out or even buy a box. In the world of classic candies, it's pretty low on my list, so low that I sometimes wonder how they've stuck around for so long. I can't say I've ever met someone who would call Reese's Pieces their favourite candy, yet they're still available in many stores.  So who's buying these? Is it just people nostalgic for 1980's movies about friendly aliens?

I'm Going Nuts, Falling Into Pieces... - Reese's Pieces "Peanut"

Here's the strange thing about Reese's Pieces, I'm not really a big fan. I think the only time I ever asked my parents to buy me a box (or bag) of Reese's Pieces was the first time I saw the movie ET. I will tell you that I am easily influenced by what I see on TV. Every time I bite into a Reese's Piece I, for some reason, expect to taste chocolate. For those unfamiliar with this classic American treat, it's like a peanut butter M&M without the chocolate.

Click here to find out if these updated Reese's Pieces are any different (spoilers, they are).

Amazing Candy/Junk Food Things That You Should Buy - Reese's Puffs

I think this is the only candy based cereal that is not just a cereal version of the original. These aren't Reese's Peanut Butter Cups cereal, they acknowledge  the texture difference, I like that.

Candy In The Media - Reese The Movie

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, or I'm just too old, but I managed to sit through this movie for about 15 minutes. Let me know if you make it further, and what I missed.

Candy In the Media - Reese's Easter Commercial Is Suggesting Something

I might be reading into this a little bit, but is the implication here that chocolate bunnies and peanut butter jars hook up and produce peanut butter eggs?

It's April, And We Have An Episode Of Monthly Morning Breakfast Thoughts, And A Review - Reese's Peanut Butter Cups Miniatures Stuffed with Reese's Pieces

On paper today's review should have worked. It combines two of the great classic candies that have worked for so many years. This candy just proves however that not everything can go together perfectly.

Click here to find out why this candy combination didn't work.

Also, we have a new episode of Chris's Monthly Morning Breakfast Thoughts, and I decided to take on the pineapple challenge. Most of the time when I say "I decided to take on", things end horribly, but apparently there are exceptions.

It's A New Series Of Videos We're Making - Unwrapping Reece's Peanut Butter Cups

I'm not sure why we're making these videos, other than an excuse to shoot some time lapse and eat some candy (two of our favourite things to do). I'm not sure how often we'll post a new video yet, but I'm sure we'll find other treats to feature.

Let us know what treat you'd like us to unwrap on Facebook and Twitter.

You can also follow us on YouTube and see the new unwrapping video as soon as we put them up.

Best Variety - Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Every week this month we're featuring treats that have special varieties.  The last two weeks we've looked at Kit Kat and Pocky.  While Kit Kat is a western candy bar, invented in England, and very popular all over the world, most of its varieties have come out of Asia.  Pocky, is truly an Asian creation and has only come to North America recently, and in limited flavours.  This week's candy on the other hand is truly an a North American treat, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.  In fact all of the varieties of this treat have been released in North America, and few have ever left.

For those in North America the Peanut Butter Cup is a real classic, but outside of North America it's really a niche treat. In most countries, if you can find Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, you'll find them in airports and candy specialty shops.  The reason they're not so popular all over the world? Peanut butter.  Peanut butter is a very divisive product, some cultures love it, many can't stand it. For those cultures that can't stand it, combining it with chocolate is about the silliest thing in the world. I've been told "why would you put peanut butter with chocolate, it just ruins the chocolate".
Because of this, the variations  in Reese's Peanut Butter Cups are all North American.  In fact, I can't say that I've ever seen a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup variation that isn't strictly American.  The varieties of this bar are a clear indication of that.  For the most part, Reese's Peanut Butter Cup varieties are based in changing up the size or ratio of the chocolate and peanut butter in the cup.  Some have more peanut butter, some have less, some are huge, some are tiny.  There's also the variety of the size of the peanut pieces in these cups.  Some of the peanut butter is smooth, some is chunky, and there's even a few with full peanuts inside. The other common difference is shape of the cup.  In some cases we can't really call them cups, but instead you have chocolate bunnies or bells filled with the same peanut butter you'd find in the classic cups.

I would say that there's only been one slightly "out there" Reese's Peanut Butter Cup ever made, and that's the special edition Elvis commemorative peanut butter and banana cream cup.  Other than that most of the cups have simply been playing around with the same ingredients.  It's not to say that these variations are any less than Kit Kat or Pocky, there's just a different take on change.

Of the approximately 18 Reese's Peanut Butter Cup variations I've tried, I've been really impressed with many of them.  This is because Reese's makes something good, and they stick to it.  Some might say that this is a prime example of American cuisine next to Asian cuisine.  America takes what they know and stick to it because it's what they like.  Asian cuisine likes to challenge itself, and often they go too far.  It's not better or worse, it's just different.
