A New Review, Late Because of Christmas

There are two reasons this new review is a day late. The first is that I wasn't sure if I should post a new review right on Christmas day. It seemed a little wrong, and I wanted my Christmas candy review to stay on the top of the page for as long as possible. The other reason is because it's tradition at our house to lay around on Christmas day in your pajamas doing almost nothing. With the random reasons I put into my head, and my love of being lazy, it was easy to decide to push the review back a day.  Fortunately I think this review was well worth waiting for.

Time To Geek Out... Or Nerd Out.

It's not often that I write a review that has almost nothing to do with the candy and everything to do with the package. When this does happen it goes one of two directions, either the package is so amazing that I can't help but talk about it, or it's such a disappointment that it actually lowers the quality of the candy. Let me just say that I wasn't impressed with the way this candy was presented.

It's All The Colours, Yet Not As Impressive As I'd Hoped - Rainbow Nerds

I keep trying to tell myself that packages have nothing to do with the candy, but then I'm presented with Nerds, and all of those ideas have to go out the door. I think I'm officially going to change my stance on this subject, from now on, packages do matter. If you're a candy company and you want me to enjoy something, you better deliver on the package as well... unless you don't have a package... hmmm, this creates a bit of a problem.

Maybe Nerds Just Shouldn't Be Updated - Double Dipped Nerds "Watermelon Apple and Cherry Lemonade"

Since I started reviewing candy many years ago I've had changing opinions about classic candies that offered different variations. There are some cases where I think these variations really work and I go out of my way to try them out, Kit Kat is probably the best example, but there are also a few others. There are also some treats that have broken out with different varieties and it just doesn't work. The new versions not only don't live up to the original, but sometimes they fail as a snack on their own. What I'm saying is that sometimes I like a little variety, and sometimes... well sometimes you get something like this new candy review.

A "For My Birthday" Candy Thing

March 5th is my birthday, and I love getting things (hey candy companies if you want to get on my good side).  I've decided that every Wednesday, till my birthday, I'm going to post something candy related that I'd really like to get for my birthday.  It's not really a hint, but I'd be really thankful...

This first gift ideas is something that brings back memories for me, both good and bad. When I was a kid Wonka had an offer for a certain amount of money, and several Nerds box tops, they would send you an I Love Nerds t-shirt.  Being a candy fan back then, I saved up my box tops and my allowance.  As soon as I had enough money and box tops saved, I mailed away the form, and waited... and waited... and waited. I wasn't just waiting though, I was also a growing boy.  So after waiting a long time, and growing several inches, my t-shirt came.

As you would imagine, the shirt was too small for me.  I was pretty bummed about it, and I stuffed my I Love Nerds shirt in the bottom of my drawer.  As I grew up, and moved several times, including out of my house, that I Love Nerds shirt kept appearing at the bottom of my drawers, only to be put on the bottom of my new t-shirt drawer.  I still love the shirt, and remember how hard it was to save up for that shirt.  To this day, I still have the shirt.  I have no plans to give it away, but  a part of me really wants to replace it, at least with some kind of Nerds t-shirt.  I can't imagine that I'll ever have another I Love Nerds shirt, but I'd be really happy if at least for a while, I could wear a Nerds shirt at some point in my life.

A Dr Who Candy Thing

I don't know that much about Dr Who, but I do know one thing for sure, the Tardis is much larger on the inside than it appears on the outside.  This is probably a good thing as you wouldn't have to refill this cookie jar too often.  Also because it's a time machine, you don't have to worry about your cookies getting stale. Or it could be that you always have stale cookies, or both.  Time travel makes for difficult problems when it comes to food freshness.

A Super Candy Thing

With all of the hype about the new Batman/Superman movie coming soon, I think it's about time to decorate my living room with all kinds of candy themed Superman and Batman stuff.  I should also probably consider getting some Star Wars stuff as well.  That way when people come into my living room they'll know that not only are they hanging out with a candy fanatic, but they'll also have to contend with my nerd skills.

A Really Big Nerdy Candy Thing

I love Nerds candy.  The thing is, Nerds don't come across as a "manly" candy to eat.  So often when I buy a box, I have to eat them at home, behind closed doors.  After all I wouldn't want to embarrass Allison with my weak candy habits would I.  This giant box of Nerds is the perfect solution to my problem.  It will allow me to enjoy one of my favorite retro candies (when I was a kid they weren't retro, but that's another rant for later), and I don't have to worry about thugs around the neighborhood making fun of me.

A Cool Candy Thing

So why is the world better for kids today than it was when I was a kid?  It can all be summed up with this t-shirt.  When I was a little kid there was an offer to get yourself a Nerds t-shirt.  To get this t-shirt you had to send a bunch of proofs of purchase, and a large sum of money (at least large for a 5 year old kid).  Then you had to wait 6 to 8 weeks for delivery.  There were no other options to buy Nerds t-shirts, stores did not carry candy themed clothing, you could only get it through the mail.

Well I saved my proofs of purchased and saved my allowance, and with the help of my dad, I sent everything away.  As it turns out there was a problem with the mail, and delivery of my shirt was delayed to twelve weeks.  I was a young growing boy determined to get my t-shirt.  The problem here was that I was "growing", and growing rather quickly.  By the time my shirt arrived it was too small for me.  I didn't know how to return the shirt, and my parents didn't really realize the problem. So I've never had a Nerds t-shirt that fit me, even though I saved for it.  I still have the shirt, it's very small, but out of principle I keep it.  Maybe I'll give it away to someone, maybe I'll see if it can be re-purposed into something I can use.

But this is why kids are so lucky today, a couple of click of a button and the Nerds shirt will be at your door in no time.

This Week In Candy

My friend David made these amazing Dr Who gummies and I thought I would share his photo.  I love it when art, candy, and my love of all things nerdy can come together.  Apparently they're not too hard to make, but I imagine that they're really hard to eat.  I would have such a hard time eating these because I'd want to play with them first, and they they'd get all dirty and I'd have to clean them up and then eat them.  Although the idea of biting the head off a Dalek is pretty tempting.

All this week on our Snack Facts feed we're going to be featuring facts about Cadbury.  Most Cadbury treats are a sure thing for me.  I can't think of any Cadbury treats that I completely hate.  The quality of Cadbury's chocolate is often fantastic, and the flavour combinations are both creative and functional.  It's only been a few years since Cadbury has broken out of the British colonies and started to go truly global.  Now the whole world is starting to experience the awesome treats this brand has to offer.  Make sure to check out our Snack Facts on our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter feeds.

Flavour wise beer and chocolate make sense together, culturally I'm not so sure.

Did you know that PEZ was origionally a candy for adults? Well it is once again.

As a protest to the word "Candy" being trademarked for use in a video game by the makers of Candy Crush Saga, a few people have started to make their own candy themed games.

So how do you feel about Necco's latest new messages to be printed onto their candy hearts: "#LOVE” "TXT Me" and “Occupy My 3>”?

Are you into Dungeons and Dragons?  Do you like candy?  Well here's a little project you might enjoy.

Huffington Post recently posted a list of "Disappointing Foods That Are Never As Good As You Think They'll Be", but I'd argue quite a few of these.

Here's an interesting photo collection were they compare things that have been banned in parts of the USA, to things that are allowed (pretty much guns).  Kinder Eggs are included in the things that have been banned.

Skittles art is so cool, any subject works really well, even your favorite football player.

Classic/Creative Candy Advertising

I think my favorite candy concept of my childhood had to be Nerds candy.  I can't explain why I was fascinated with both the candy and the strange little no armed mascots, but I was.  While I never got myself a plush Nerd, I did order myself an I *heart* Nerds T-shirt.  It took so long to arrive in the mail that by the time I got it I was almost too big to fit into it.  Fortunately that meant that it never really got that worn, and that means that I actually still have it in almost perfect condition.  If anybody out there has a Nerds plush toy in good condition, and would be willing to trade it for a Nerds T-shirt (very small) in almost perfect condition, drop me a line.

A Cool Candy Thing

I consider this to be more novelty than candy, only because the candy itself doesn't change, just the ridiculous size of the box it comes in, and the quantity of candy you receive.  I'm not sure who or why anybody would need such a larger quantity of Nerds candy, unless you where really popular at retro 80's nights at your local night club.  It's funny, I don't think I would ever want to eat this many Nerds, however I think the giant box would be kind of cool to have.  I'm sure I could use it to decorate our living room.
