A Sweet Candy Thing

Looking for that extreme Valentine's Day gift that will make any sweet-tooth happy?  Why not line the front of your house with giant candy hearts?  Honestly I'm not sure how I would react to the site of love letters on candy lining my driveway.  It might be kind of neat, or it might be a little creepy. What do you think, is it too much?

Candy News

What's the sexiest food you know, chocolate, oysters... asparagus?!!

I normally don't link to other people's snack reviews, but I highly doubt I'll ever review edible underwear myself.

Get the full scoop on Candy Hearts, then get yourself a full scoop of Candy Hearts.

Of this list of ways to say I love you using food, I think "let a jar of Nutella do the talking" is good enough for me.

So does wine and chocolate really go together?  I'm convinced that everything goes with chocolate, so the answer is yes.

Apparently who you vote for may actually have a connection to what kind of candy you like.

Boing Boing has posted two really interesting articles that I feel tell the real problem with obesity in the world right now. Here's the first, and here's the second.

If you need to argue that chocolate might be a health food, read this article, and amaze your friends.

Here's an interesting study that deals with how we are affected by candy advertising.

I find it odd that the closer we get to Valentine's Day, the more recipes I'm discovering for candy themed alcoholic drinks.

Candy News

Flavour wise beer and chocolate make sense together, culturally I'm not so sure.

Did you know that PEZ was origionally a candy for adults? Well it is once again.

As a protest to the word "Candy" being trademarked for use in a video game by the makers of Candy Crush Saga, a few people have started to make their own candy themed games.

So how do you feel about Necco's latest new messages to be printed onto their candy hearts: "#LOVE” "TXT Me" and “Occupy My 3>”?

Are you into Dungeons and Dragons?  Do you like candy?  Well here's a little project you might enjoy.

Huffington Post recently posted a list of "Disappointing Foods That Are Never As Good As You Think They'll Be", but I'd argue quite a few of these.

Here's an interesting photo collection were they compare things that have been banned in parts of the USA, to things that are allowed (pretty much guns).  Kinder Eggs are included in the things that have been banned.

Skittles art is so cool, any subject works really well, even your favorite football player.

With all of this retro candy talk, you can't forget one of the coolest retro candies ever, the Conversation Heart.  What I love about this retro candy poster we have for sale, isn't just that the candy is retro, but the messages are retro as well.  How many people even understand the phrase "Beep Me"?

Old Candy Critic Articles - Ladies Choice

I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog.  This week we look back at a poll I took trying to find out which candy most ladies would appreciate on Valentines Day.

It’s Valentines Day, you’ve got a special dinner planned for your best lady, followed by a nice romantic walk in the park, but what about a sweet little treat?  When you start a date with a nice little treat, it can be a big part of how the rest of the date night might go.  With the wrong treat you might insult her, or ever worse, gross her out.  So what kind of treat is the right treat to give to your date on this the most “important” of all date nights?

Here's the results of a little poll I took recently, asking what people thought about getting certain treats for Valentines Day. The results might shock you, the results might cause you to think, the results might convince you that maybe you should go back to the candy store and get something different for that special someone.

A box of Chocolates.

Nice mix of chocolates with all kinds of fun fillings.

This was no surprise at all. Although some people seem to think it's a little tacky to give someone a box of chocolates for Valentines Day.  I think some people might be put off by the “commercialism” of just going out and buying a box of chocolates.

A bag of cinnamon hearts.

Spicy and sweet all at the same time.

Surprising, I think people just love a classic.  It goes to show that price isn’t really the most important thing when it comes to getting the perfect Valentines Day treat.  It’s amazing how much a childhood memory can make someone really happy.

A couple of lollypops.

It's simple but shaped like a heart.

I think people though they're a little cheap to give as a token of love. Most people seem to look at lollipops as being too simple a choice as a treat.  I’m sure if lollipops were included in a gift basket it would be different, but on their own it’s not really much of a gift.

Hershey Kisses

Take the Hershey away and it might be better?

It's funny how the name of a treat can influence what you think of it.  I think the people that thought this was a great gift thought the name “Kiss” was kind of cute.  They might also have had fond memories of Hershey’s Kisses as a kid.

A cute chocolate animal.

Who says bunnies are just for easter.

Many people seemed to really like the unique idea of getting a cute little animal for Valentines Day.  I think those that didn't like it wanted something a little more traditional instead of something overly original.  I also think that some look at chocolate animals as being the exclusive treat of Easter.

What I get from this little exercise is that people really like candy for Valentines Day. I think if you try and say that price has no influence that would be wrong, except in the case of the cinnamon hearts. My advice is to do your research and always make sure you know whom you're buying for.

Candy Art - Heart Chocolate

I think this year's trend for Valentines Day is going to be the realistic looking heart in many candy forms.  I think many of them are beautiful works of art, like the one above created by Katherine Clapner.  I'm certain however that we'll also see others try and get into this game, and you'll find different degrees of "reality" in the designs.  At some point I'm pretty certain that I'll come across a chocolate heart that looks more like a standard valentines heart than an anatomically correct heart, and that means everything will have gone full circle.

You can read more about the heart pictured above here.

If you are interested in this kind of Valentines Day offering, here's a great listing of some really great looking heart themed gifts.

Strange Way To Say I Love You

Mental Floss has compiled a list of the 10 strangest sayings ever found on a candy heart.  I'm a little suprised that the folks that make candy hearts don't have a customize your treat function on their web site.  M&Ms do it and it seems fairly popular.  If I could customize my hearts I'm sure the first few ideas I'd get would be silly and obscene.

Click here to read the list.
