It's Labor Day, But We Still Posted A New Candy Review - Necco Wafers

This new review is a classic, but according to the news (candy news) it's not going to be around for very long. It appears that after hundreds of years this classic candy might be going away. There are people all over the internet trying to get their hands on one last taste of Necco wafers. Some might save them for posterity, others might want to ceremoniously eat one last bite. We just wanted to make sure we had the review covered in our collection.

Click here to read the review that might be impossible to find.

We don't have a new episode of Chris's Monday Morning Breakfast Thoughts because it's labor day and that means we're taking the day off. We will however have a special video tomorrow that we're cleverly calling Chris's Tuesday Morning Breakfast Thoughts.

Make sure to follow us on Twitter and Facebook to complain about the lack of  MMBT.

Also follow us on Tumblr to get the new reviews as soon as they come out.

A Sweet Candy Thing

Looking for that extreme Valentine's Day gift that will make any sweet-tooth happy?  Why not line the front of your house with giant candy hearts?  Honestly I'm not sure how I would react to the site of love letters on candy lining my driveway.  It might be kind of neat, or it might be a little creepy. What do you think, is it too much?

Classic/Creative Candy Advertising

While I enjoy a Necco wafer as much as the next guy, if you'll notice, all these kids got in their stocking was Necco wafers, and nothing else.  I think a little variety is in order, maybe a chocolate bar, small toy, anything would be better than a stocking full of just Necco wafers.  Having said that, if the Necco company would like to send me a stocking full of Necco wafers, I'm willing to retract this whole statement.

I found this ad here.

Candy News

Necco now lets you customize your candy hearts, I wonder if the'll let you put anything you want on them?

How do take your medical Marijuana?  How about in cotton candy form?

According to science, if you're really happy, you'll probably indulge in some tasty treats.

I don't think banning junk food is the best way to get kids to eat right, but what do I know.

It's national ice cream month, what a coincidence that this holiday would happen when we're having such sunny weather (my apologizes if you're reading this and it's raining).

Candy News

We've decided to change a few things here at Candy Critic, and one of the things we're changing is how we deliver candy news.  It used to be that we would have a daily post all about what's new in candy news.  We're changing things up a little bit, instead we're going to post a weekly round up, every Friday, of the top news stories we've come across   For the regular news you'll have to follow us on Twitter where we'll post the news as we get it every day.

Since we haven't posted any news over the last few weeks, here's a few stories to get us started from the last few weeks:

So which cup are you going to drink that hot chocolate out of, does it matter?  According to science it does.

While you're deciding which cup to use for that hot chocolate, why not read "The Surprisingly Manly History of Hot Cocoa"

What are the latest trends in potato chip flavours?  I'm saddened by the lack of sweet in this list.

I'm told that homemade marshmallows are a completely different beast then the ones you get in supermarkets, here's some instruction on how to make some yourself.

Necco is going to start to let you write your own love messages on their hearts, I'm betting obscene messages will not be allowed.

I know that dark chocolate is supposed to be good for you, but now science is saying that white chocolate might also be good for you, the message I'm getting is chocolate is good for you.

Blue is the new red, according to science many of the chemicals used to make things blue might not be healthy to eat.  Now that makes me feel blue.

Want to change the way you look at Corn Flakes?  Then read this article "Corn Flakes Were Invented as Part of an Anti-Masturbation Crusade"

Here are six foods that can make you smarter, and yes, one of them is chocolate.

Little Debbie is making her own Twinkies, so are they better than the ones Hostess made?

Werther's is looking to update their image as an old mans candy, I suggest adding racing stripes.

Thursday's Candy Links

Do you know what the "A" and the "W" stand for in A&W? How about N E C C O?  Well now you do.

USA Today has a great photo collection of wacky themed ice cream treats.

According to dentists, and it's pretty obvious, "Hidden Sugars Increase Risk Of Gum Disease", so eat candy, it's not hidden sugar at all.

The Royal Jubilee increased chocolate sales in London this past weekend... It might have helped that I was there too (more on that next week).

Cadbury also helped with the increase in chocolate sales with this awesome chocolate creation for the Jubilee.

Monday's Candy Links

Necco decided that they would experiment with "natural" ingredients... it was a total failure, so they're back to the originals.

New chocolate shop in Seattle... they sell Seattle Chocolates.

If you had a bag of tiny candies, would you eat them all?  This study says you would.

Red Vines is once again giving away a whole bunch of licorice, I think free candy is the best way to advertise.

Necco Is Not For Sale

There was speculation that Necco, famous maker of Necco wafers and Conversation Hearts was going to close down their US factory.  The speculation was that the company was going up for sale and that it would probably re-locate somewhere outside of the US.  Well it's officially not going to happen, for now, so 500 jobs are saved, and the quality that is Necco is safe.  But for how long.

Financial Troubles at Necco

It's always sad when a candy mainstay is being threatened with closure. It's even sadder when the closure is not from people's lack of interest in the candy, but bad investments and financial troubles that are unrelated. I sure hope someone can come and help these guys out, because they make some of the greatest classic American candy ever.

Too Much Candy Hearts

I picked up a bag of candy hearts the other day because I just love reading the cute little messages on them. I also think they make the greatest gift for that special someone because you can munch on a bag and say nice things to each other like:That’s so cute.
Wow, French, how exotic.Hey wait a minute… That’s a little too much commitment from a candy heart if you ask me.
