Peeps 5 Ways

 I just ate Peeps prepared 5 different ways, and I'm blown away at the results. It's amazing how different the results were each and every way I prepared them. I should note that I'm not a huge fan of Peeps, but maybe if they offered them with cooking or cooling instructions I might like them a little more. Here's the results and how I felt:

Regular - You can read all my Peeps reviews, but one thing you'll notice about many of them is that I find the flavour is just way too bland. The only Peeps I regularly enjoy are the variety that are flavoured, particularly with chocolate. This was no exception.

Refrigerated - This was probably the most surprising of all the Peeps preparations. I'm finding that most candy items that I put in a refrigerator just get cold. There are a few chocolate bar exceptions, but more often than not I'm very disappointed with refrigerated candy. This was one of the few exceptions where the texture was totally changed for the better, and that's important because I'm not a huge fan of marshmallow's texture.

Frozen - This was also a surprise, but I don't think it went as well as the refrigerated. I would say that this is an improvement, but it was almost so weird that I'm not sure if I really liked it or not. The frozen centre was fun, but not enough to really make me fall in love with these.

Microwaved - The greatest part about this preparation is how the candy coating got hard. The inside of the marshmallow also got very gooey, but the powder coating turned into a hard candy coating that I really liked. I would also suggest that anyone with some Peeps and a microwave throw a few in there just for fun, as watching them expand is really cool.

Baked - This was not surprising, but it was by far my favourite. I don't really like marshmallows, unless they're roasted. This totally worked because it gave me the nice toasted marshmallow flavour and included the hard candy shell. One day I hope to have a box of Peeps on a camping trip and I may attempt to make these into s'mores.

I Make Marshmallows Awesome!

If you had told me when I was a child that as an adult I would have the ability to purchase a bag of Luck Charms without the cereal bits, I probably would have skipped my depressed punk rock phase and just looked at the future as the greatest thing that was ever going to happen.

A Soft and Squishy New Review - Mango Teddy Marshmallows

I have a common problem when I review a treat that I don't really like (spoilers). I'm not a big fan of marshmallows, and cheap marshmallows are the worst. Needless to say I wasn't a big fan of these Mango Teddy Marshmallows. So after writing the review, I had a common problem that I get when I don't like the candy I'm reviewing, I had a lot of these left over. When I have a bunch of candy left over that I'm not interesting in eating, they either sit around for a while, or I try and figure out something clever to do with the leftovers.

Sometimes I try and bake with these leftovers, and sometimes I make silly videos. Baking can improve a treat, silly videos never improve a treat.

It's Time To Stuff My Face With Mango Teddy Marshmallows.

I'm not sure why I did this, other than the fact that there was a bag of Mango Teddy Marshmallows sitting in my candy stash and it seemed like something I'd do. As usual with these stuff them in your mouth challenges, it turned into a fairly bad idea about three quarters of the way through.

The Candy Critic's Thanksgiving Candy Ideas That Should Exist

There are so many flavours associated with Thanksgiving, and many have crossed over to the snacking world. Pumpkin spice is probably the most popular flavour right now, but there are also many potato chips flavoured with inspirations from this holiday as well. I seem to remember Jones Soda pulled off Thanksgiving flavours at one point, and people went nuts over them. I personally think we need more snacks with the awesome flavours of Thanksgiving, but I’m not just going to complain about it.

Instead I’m designing a few Thanksgiving candy and snack creations, and best of all for the candy/snack companies out there, I’m giving the concepts away. I invite any snack or candy company to use these ideas, all I ask in return is that you send me some samples. I’ll even post a review on candycritic.org.

Sweet Potato Marshmallows

The connection between sweet potatoes and marshmallows is a weird one. I don’t know how it started,  but I can’t deny that it works. One of the thing it taught me is that sweet potatoes work well in sweets. In Asia sweet potato candies are common, but not in North America. That’s why I think introducing a sweet potato candy in North America around Thanksgiving makes sense. If you tie it with marshmallows it just could be the novelty candy that people grow to love.

Mashed Potatoes and Gravy Pop Tarts

The idea of a savoury Pop Tart is due. McDonald’s in Asia have been selling savoury pies for years, and what is a Pop Tart other than a flat pie. I think theming it to Thanksgiving would be a great way to introduce this concept, and mash potatoes and gravy would be the perfect flavour and texture combination. You could fill the pie with the mashed potatoes and then make a nice gravy (unsweetened) topping. After that the sky’s the limit, chicken pot pie, pizza, so many choices.

Cranberry Bubble Gum

Of all the concepts I’m presenting today, I think cranberry gum is the most logical and least intimidating. It’s so logical that I wouldn’t be surprised if someone mentions in the comments that it already exists. I think cranberry could easily become the flavour of Thanksgiving much like pumpkin spice, this way we’d have a flavour to put between pumpkin spice and peppermint/candy cane.

Turkey Spice Corn Bread Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Icing

This next idea requires a little bit of imagination. Take your a average store bought cupcake, like a Hostess Cupcake, and flip it around. Go savoury over sweet, and use some Thanksgiving flavours. To start, get rid of the cake and go cornbread instead. Then take the spices one normally uses in turkey stuffing, and flavour your cornbread. If you so choose, maybe fill it with mashed potatoes as well. Next, top this cake off with some savoury cream cheese. I think this would be a fun play on pumpkin spice, and done well could actually work. Having said that, if it does work, and Starbucks makes a frappuccino flavoured with Turkey Spice, I claim no responsibility.

5 Awesome Candy Themed Funko Pops - Part 5 - Marshmallow Peeps

Make sure to look back, because all this week we've been looking at awesome candy themed Funko Pops.

Of all the Funko Pops that we've looked at this week, this is probably my least favourite. First of all I'm not a big marshmallow guy, so Peeps are generally out of my wheelhouse in the first place. Secondly I find it a little strange that Funko decided to go with the Peeps bunnies instead of the classic chicks. While I don't hate this toy, I'm not really sure if it's something I'd put on my shelf.

Today I Review A Surprisingly Good Marshmallow - Marshmallow Cones

I've said it before, but I don't like marshmallows that much. I also don't like licorice and fake banana flavour either. People are often shocked that there are some candy flavours that I don't like. While I don't like them, I do recognize that others do, so I try and make my personal preferences clear when I write a review. I mention that I'm not a fan, and even suggest that your tastes might be different than my tastes. When people ask, I often suggest that you don't take my reviews as the answer to weather a candy is good or not, but use it as a barometer and judge my taste versus yours and see how a particular candy might fit into your own arena.

This Week's Candy Review Tries To Sweep The Competition Away - Original Marshmallow Brooms

I'm not really sure how well known this candy is. In Canada, and in particular Ontario, we've had Marshmallow Brooms around for as long as I can remember. It's a little strange because I look at this as a mainstay on my candy shelf, however I imagine that if you've never seen these before, they might come off as really strange. I mean who would want to eat a broom?
