I Think Kraft Can Do Better With Their Flavour Boosts, and I'll Prove It

In this candy experiment I take several ingredients and try to make a better Kraft Dinner Flavour Boost, three of them in fact. I make a s'mores, apple pie and peanut butter and banana flavour boost, all of which could be slipped into a packet and sold on shelves.

If you want to see what else I'm up to, make sure to follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter too.

S'Mores In Candy

I feel like s'mores should be the easiest treat to reproduce in candy form, but frankly I don't know if I've ever found a treat that pulled off the perfect match. I've tried s'mores ice cream, candy bar, and even cookies, but nothing has been able to match the pure bliss that is biting into a warm s'mores fresh off the fire. I feel like it's a fools errand to try and recreate this treat, but I'm always happy to try out any candy companies attempt.

Click here to find out how Cadbury did in this difficult attempt.

Make sure to follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, maybe I'll be making s'mores.

We Got S'more Candy To Review And A New Show

We'll start today off with our new review. It's for a packaged s'mores treat, and I spend most of the review wondering if it's at all possible to make a treat that actually matches the pure joy of real s'mores. It's a tough thing to re-create, but candy companies keep trying.

Click here to read how this candy stacks up to real s'mores.

Also this week we're premiering our new YouTube show called Chris's Monday Morning Breakfast Thoughts. A show were we take a look at what's happening this week on candycritic.org and within the candy world in general. Let us know what you think of the new show, and we also welcome suggestions for what we should eat for breakfast.

This Week In Candy

Well summer is upon us, and s'mores are once again making a comeback. In general I like s'mores, they take two things I love, gram cracker and chocolate, and something I only like toasted, marshmallows, and turn them into something fun. I've seen all kinds of s'mores variations and machines this year, including the one above, but nothing really beats the classic made on a campfire in nature. Summer is a strange time for candy, since most candy melts in the hot sun, but somehow we managed to create a sweet treat that makes sure we can still enjoy some chocolate, and uses heat to its advantage.

You may have noticed a lack of "This Week In Candy" last week, this was in great part because of the insanity we had going on here during Canada Day and eventually the 4th of July. I think we're back on track for now, however I see more disruptions in the future this summer. We have two epic adventures happening this summer, one of which is going to change things a lot here at candycritic.org. I always here stories of the long slow summer, but I rarely seem to live it, it's always chaos at our house. The good news for any of you following along on Twitter and Facebook is that you can keep up with out adventures this summer.

This week is hopefully going to be filled with editing and recording episodes of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!!, and Junk Fud On The Road. Next week we'll post an episode of Junk Fud On The Road, and later an episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!! We're also working on a few episodes of In Hindsight that we'll post later in the summer.

This week's new review is of a classic bar, but a classic bar with a twist.  In general I shudder when I have to eat a classic candy with "a twist", but this one wasn't all bad.  Click here to find out why the Snickers bar can be crispier, but maybe it's not necessary.

This Week In Candy

This last week was really a pizza filled week for me.  First of all I was invited to a BBQ potluck pizza party, and it was fantastic.  The idea was that each person was supposed to bring ingredients for a pizza.  The dough was provided, so all you needed to bring was the toppings.  Then, one at a time, a pizza was put onto the BBQ, and each person that brought ingredients would have to top their pizza.  After the pizza was cooked, it was sliced up, and everybody got to have a slice.  I think by the time the night was over dozens of pizzas were made, including 3 dessert pizzas.  I brought one of those dessert pizzas, which consisted of marshmallows, grated milk chocolate (Dairymilk to be exact), and crushed graham crackers. S'Mores pizza!

Also this weekend, I recorded a new episode of the Junk Fud podcast.  This episodes theme was pizza.  Mark, who has been a guest on the Junk Fud podcast in the past had some great stories and insights into the world of pizza.  Hopelly this episode will be online later this week. Mark being such a great guest in the past and this time, is now going to be a regular on the Junk Fud podcast.  For now we're looking to post a new episode of Junk Fud featuring Mark every month.  We're still working out the details, so stay tuned.

This week we're also starting out a contest, brought to you by our friends at Just Born (the folks that make Mike & Ikes and Peeps).  They have some new/retro flavours of Mike and Ikes coming out soon, and they want to share some with one of our readers.  To win this prize pack, all you have to do is send an email or message explaining what your favorite flavour of candy is.  Tell us why this flavour is your favorite and whomever can convince us the most will get the new Mike and Ikes sent to their house (You must be a resident of the USA to enter, sorry rest of the world). You can submit your answer in the comments here, or send us a message on Facebook, Twitter, or here. Make sure include some way for us to contact you back (email always works), and the contest will end in two weeks (February 9th a midnight Eastern).

This week's Snack Facts we're looking at one of the best selling drinks in the world, Coca-Cola.  Every day we'll be posting a new fun fact on Instagram all about this soft drink giant.  If you don't have Instagram you can also follow Snack Facts on our Twitter feed, or Facebook page.

Our new review this week is from a chocolate shop in my home country.  Not only does the fact that they're Canadian make them awesome, but they also have the best name I've ever heard for a chocolate shop, Beanermunky.  Click here to read the Beanermunky's chocolate review.

Happy 4th Of July My American Friends!

I only post this because statistically Americans are my number 1 source of hits on this blog.  Followed by Canadians, Brits, and then it constantly changes depending on the spammers that are visiting.  So does this mean that all you Americans are BBQing right now?  If so, make sure to throw a few marshmallows on some sticks and make yourself some s'mores as well.

Ritz Bits Sandwiches S'mores

When I first set eyes on this box of Ritz bits sandwiches "S'mores", I was fairly grossed out.  I think it had something to do with the idea of eating a marshmallow and chocolate cream on a cheese cracker.  After thinking about it a bit, I figured that maybe the savory sweet combination might work.  then I read the package and realized that the crackers were in fact graham flavoured and not cheese.
Each cookie is filled with a white and brown cream to represent the marshmallow and chocolate.  I have to say that the chocolate tasted fine, but the marshmallow really had no flavour at all.  It was fairly disapointing. I would have thought they could have given the cream a toasted marshmallow flavour, and that would have worked really well with the chocolate.  Even better would be to have put a toasted marshmallow flavour with little chunks of real chocolate.
Fortunately the yummy graham cracker outside and tasty chocolate filling really worked well together.  I wouldn't call these "s'mores", but I would call them tasty.

Hershey's Facebook Page isn't all Sweet

Organic Authority pointed out a contest that went a bit awry: instead of being lavished with praise on National S'Mores Day, Hershey's was confronted by Fair Trade chocolate activists via their Facebook page. The activists were organized by Change.org to raise awareness about child labor and other unsavory practices in the cocoa industry.

Today is National S'Mores Day

I just realized that I forgot to post anything about it too.  I was going to skip it, because I though it was too late, then I realized that most people would only be sparking up a warm camp fire around this time anyways.
