Amazing Candy/Junk Food Things That You Should Buy - Zombie Pops
at
10:00 AM
This is a kind zombie roll flip thing. Normally zombies chase after you trying to eat your brains, but not with these. Instead you pop these in the freezer and try and eat their brains, as well as the entire upper half of their bodies. These would also work very well if you wanted to experiment with meat flavoured ice treats.

Amazing Candy/Junk Food Things That You Should Buy - Robot Pops
at
10:00 AM
The only fun way to learn about the cold calculating hearts of a robot is with these silicon robot Popsicle molds. The other way to learn about the cold hearts of a robot is to fight a robot to the death, and when it's almost defeated you,beg for mercy. Both ways will show you how cold a robot can be, but these molds are much safer.

Cooking With Candy Critic - The Ottawa Snowbank
at
10:00 AM
In March, I was inspired to create a dessert while on a walk to he grocery store. Most people associate Canada with being the land of snow, and in the winter it can be. However we also have warm summers, and it can get up to 35 degrees in some places. This means that spring time is all about thawing snow. This is when snow turns from a pretty white powder you see in storybooks, to a pile of dirty ice/slush. So on this walk I was inspired by these piles of dirty snow to create the ultimate dessert. I noticed how much these piles of snow looked like ice cream covered with Oreo cookie bits, and instantly my mind started to race.
Fortunately I was heading to the grocery store, so I decided to walk through the store in search of the ingredients I'd need to create the ultimate cool treat, inspired by the grossest snow in the world.
The two ingredients I picked up the store were pudding and Oreo cookies, I also needed mint and salt, but I already had that at home. I'm using fresh mint since I have it growing in my indoor herb garden, but in a pinch dried mint would work too. As for the pudding, you need two types, vanilla and chocolate. You'll likely use all of the vanilla, and one quarter of the chocolate, so have a few extra pudding bowls ready, just in case.
I started by preparing a few of the ingredients. First I took apart the cookies, and crushed the cookie bits. I did two separate batches of cookie bits, one was crushed just a little, the other into a powder. I lightly crushed about six cookies, and powdered three. You can do more cookies if you like, but I thought this would work for a nice balance. I discarded the icing from the cookies right into my mouth, this is a good step to keep you from just eating the pudding later on. I'm told you can buy already crushed cookies, but what's the fun in that, also, you need two different consistencies for this dessert. I also chopped the mint, but that's not nearly as interesting to read about as crushing cookies.
Once the cookies and mint are prepped, I made both batches of pudding. I prefer instant pudding because I have things to do with my life. I like the idea of pouring a couple of cups of milk into a bowl with a mysterious powder and getting instant dessert. Once you've made the pudding, take a few spoonfuls of the vanilla, and mix it with the powdered cookie (not the slightly crushed ones, but the ones you pulverized into a powder). Stir it up until you get a grey looking goo (bonus tip, this is basically how they make The Grey Stuff at Walt Disney World). You should now have two large bowls of pudding (one vanilla and one chocolate), one small bowl of pudding that looks kind of grey, a bowl of cookie crumbs, chopped mint, and salt.
Now it's time to make your frozen treats. Get yourself some kind of Popsicle maker, the shape doesn't really matter, however it might be weird if they were shaped like your favorite cartoon character or something. Having said that, I won't judge. First add some cookie crumbs to the bottom of the Popsicle mold. Then spoon or pour in some vanilla pudding, about one quarter of the way up. Add some more cookie crumbs, then add more vanilla pudding to about the halfway point. On this next level drop in a few dollops of the Oreo cookie pudding (it will be gloppy, that's the point). Then add a few more cookie crumbs and more vanilla pudding till about the three quarter mark.
Add more cookie bits, and a few dollops of the Oreo pudding if you like, but before you add the vanilla pudding, sprinkle in a little salt. Not too much, just a dash. This is to represent the salt they use to clean the streets, it also adds a fun flavour when you get to that layer. After you've added the salt, add a bit more vanilla pudding, but only a bit, leaving room for a few more cookie bits, your mint, and some chocolate pudding. The chocolate pudding and mint represent the mud and leaves at the bottom of the snowbank. It also adds an interesting flavour.
Once you have all your layers done, put the treats in the freezer, and let them sit overnight. The great thing about this recipe is, if you make a mess, it's only more realistic. You can also alter the design if you like to better represent the gross snowbanks near your house.
If you don't want to freeze this dessert, you can do it in bowls as well, but I find the bowls look too fancy. Just make sure to follow the instructions above, only backwards. Also, since they're not frozen, then don't really represent "snowbanks" as well.
Once you're Ottawa Snowbanks are frozen, taken them out and enjoy. Much like making them, the great thing about these is if you make a mess, it's only more realistic.

A Cool and Fishy Candy Thing
at
9:00 AM
Here's the thing, I love the idea of popsicle makers that have strange shapes. When they incorporate the shape of the stick into the theme, I love them even more. I don't make popsicles at home as much as I'd like, mostly because cleaning these popsicle makers is often a pain. And while I love the odd shapes, often they're not easy to eat, and the shape can often make them messy. So for me to really love a novelty popsicle maker it either has to make eating the popsicles easier, or the theme has to be really awesome. I'm not sure if these popsicles are easy to eat, but they are certainly awesome enough to be worth cleaning up a drippy mess.

Looking to make some s'mores in your bathroom? Well as it turns out the best tool to make them might be your hair dryer.
Did you know that Costco sold some high end products at super high prices, this includes the Jingle Bell Holiday Tower Pallet which sells for $2,799.99.
Worried about high blood pressure? A cinnamon bun might be the best way to go.

A Cool Candy Thing
at
2:00 PM
Last week we posted a link to a Death Star ice mold that could be used for so many other products, like chocolate, or cakes. This week I've found an even cooler mold, the Millennium Falcon. This mold is cooler because the Millennium Falcon played a more mobile role in the movies. The Death Star just hung in the air not really doing much except the occasional deadly laser blast. The Millennium Falcon on the other hand swooped around shooting things and being generally cool. So you could easily play with whatever you make using this mold in so many more ways. You could even recreate the scene where the giant worm eats the Falcon, and you could play the worm..

While this product is labeled as an ice mold, you can use it for so many other application. Why not make a fun Death Star ice pop, what about a Death Star chocolate, or why not a Death Star cake-pop. The applications are only limited to your imagination. Then you can devour your treat like Luke Skywalker devoured the real Death Star... and the you can "go home!"

I love the idea of these Ice Sabers, I mean who doesn't like Star Wars, and who doesn't like cold treats. I do however see one flaw in these treats. If I made a batch of these, and had some friends over, the minute we pulled the Ice Sabers out of the molds, it would turn into an instant sword fight. Then, inevitably, someones ice treat would break leaving someone unable to enjoy their ice treat. This would then ruin the day with my friends, a great deal of Facebook un-friending would take place, and I would be left alone with tears in my eyes. Now I know this is only hypothetical, but I think I may pass on getting a set of these.

Breast milk lollipops, I was going to post this under "Stuff I Want To Try", but I don't really want to try it.
Would you drink a 20 year old can of cola? I wouldn't, I once sampled a 10 year old can of root beer, and I couldn't drink the stuff for years afterwards.
This might be the best idea ever for Poptarts, why aren't they making them then?
Our friends at Madelaine chocolate in New York got hit pretty hard by hurricane Sandy, but it looks like they'll be back up and running in June.
Pez just announced that they're going to release special edition Harry Potter Pez dispensers, I'm thinking it's about 3 years too late.
Looking refresh yourself and cool off this summer, but you also love Italian food, well I have the perfect solution.
Healthy chocolate is really trendy right now, does that mean fine quality dark chocolate full of flavour, or chocolate filled with chemicals to make it "less fat" and "no sugar".
It appears that the glazed donut sandwich has officially gone mainstream in the USA.
Rock bands are notorious for demanding special foods backstage, although if I was famous, I'd ask for what Marilyn Manson wants.
Not sure what to do with the ice cream you left out all afternoon? Well don't throw it out, here's some ways you can transform your ice cream soup into other tasty treats.
Here's a great collection of stock photographs of people that "don't know how to eat popsicles".
Have you heard that the Canadian 100 dollar bill smells like maple syrup? Can anyone confirm this?

Old Candy Critic Articles - Stick it to the man
at
12:00 PM
I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog. This week I'm posting an article I wrote with some candy lessons I had just learned. Since then I've learned a few more.
What's the appeal of eating something on a stick? What makes something on a stick better than just eating it? Who thought stick = fun? You could look at the history of food to find out that sticks and food have been around forever. As long as man has been cooking, food sticks have been an important part of life. The problem I have with the idea of putting food on sticks comes from the candy world.
Why in the world do so many candies come on sticks? I think the only candy that has to be on a stick is a Popsicle. Why might you ask does the frozen treat deserve to be on a stick? Go into your freezer, put an ice cube in your mouth and don't take it out. Can't do it can you. You have to pull cold things out of your mouth or it hurts.
Lollipops are okay with me, but not because I think the stick are necessary. If you think about it the idea of taking a candy out of your mouth half way through eating it is kind of gross. Try spitting out your chewing gum after a few minutes, hold it, and then put it back in your mouth, yuck. The lollipop was originally huge and impossible to stick in your mouth in one shot. So you can understand why a stick might help you keep your fingers clean. You can still find huge lollipops today, but for the most part lollipops fit comfortably in your mouth whole, so the basic principle doesn’t really make sense.
The problem I have comes from the idea of putting things like chocolate, marshmallows, and gummies on sticks. Chocolate and marshmallows on a stick has been around for a while, but the gummy thing has become a new and very strange trend. Whenever I eat a gummy on a stick, all it does is get all gooey and stringy, and if they decorate it little bits of icing fall and sprinkles fall all over the place. The chocolate on a stick is very often cheap chocolate, I'm not saying it's all cheap but for the most part it is. The other problem is that chocolate cracks and when you’re trying to eat it on a stick, it falls all over the place.
Let's face it; just putting something on a stick is not really that creative an idea. If you need the stick by all means use one, but if you’re doing it because you think it's clever to put something new on a stick, you’re wrong. Try something else, we as candy consumers are finished with the stick thing, I want something new and fun not something pointy and long.

Old Candy Critic Articles - Better or Worse
at
12:00 PM
I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog. This week, since it's so hot in so many places all over the world, I've decided to post an article I wrote about the differences between a couple of fudgy ice cream treats.
This article was not planned at all, then it happened, the first day of summer. You know what I love about the first day of summer? The first cool treat on a warm day. So there I am walking down the street into my local store and I'm off to the ice cream case. Then I see it, one of my favourites, a super fudge Popsicle Thinking a simple choice was to be had, I made a horrible discovery. There are more than one type of super fudge Popsicle So being the Candy Critic, I bought both and I'm going to compare the two and let you know what I think. This way you don't have to worry that, if faced with the same problem, you'll make the wrong decision.

Super Fudge
Nestlé
Simply perfection. This has got to be
one of the greatest ice cream treats ever made. This is one of the
treats that I will purchase again and again. If you find one and your
in the mood for a fudgy treat, this is the one for you. The only
reason you might not like it is that its very sweet, but the
chocolate flavour is spectacular, and the texture is perfect.
Xtreme Fudge
Good Humor
I really couldn't figure this fudgy treat out. At first it was awesome, imagine a Fudgsicle dipped in chocolate. It was a great start but as I ate it, I was left disappointed. As you got lower and lower the Xtreme Fudge treat changed shades of brown. This did nothing but ruin the flavour which was fine at the start. It's a fine treat, but not the best.
All things are not created equal, and
that's a good thing, because I would be out of business if they were.
If given the choice, I have to go with the Nestlé Super Fudge - it
just gave a little more. You know what would a fantastic idea? If the
two company's came together and made a Super Xtreme fudge treat, only
in my dreams I guess.

Old Candy Critic Articles - Frozen treats I made myself
at
12:00 PM
I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog. This week I'm posting an article I wrote about freezing some of your favorite liquids, into frozen treats.
Summers coming... Actually this article was written in February with about two feet of snow outside my window, but I'm a little lazy, that and I really don't see any problem eating frozen treats all year round. When I was a kid I used to eat frozen treats before going skating because it would fool my body into thinking it was warmer outside. Sure I could have died of hypothermia but when you want to skate you'll do just about anything.Rather than deal with the old and slightly melted treats that are left at my local store, I decided to do a bit of experimentation and try and create some frozen treats of my own. Some of these treats worked, others don't, either way I get a nice cool snack before building a great snowman outside.
Bill Cosby you're a great man, but unfortunately you weren't great enough to keep the pudding pop on the market. I'm not going to take this lying down though. I'll get myself a package of instant pudding, mix it up and freeze it myself. Guess what, it's exactly the same. Joy of Joys, Mr. Cosby I may not be able to watch you plug my frozen treats, but alas I can enjoy a super smooth pudding pop. I love these things, I could eat them all day long. For my birthday this year I want a brand new freezer so I can eat these and only these every day.
Yogurt, Jam, and Granola
What the heck am I doing, this is some kind of healthy treat! I might actually be improving my health by eating this, and worst of all I'm endorsing it on Candy Critic. Well I'm not really "endorsing" it because it's not the best frozen treat I've ever had. I could do without the granola in particular. It's also a little bit bitter, seeing as my sweet tooth throbs, maybe that's why I don't like it. I do have to say though, for a "good for me" type treat it's pretty tasty, well it beats out celery anyways.

Jell-O and Fruit
I'd never thought of freezing Jell-O until someone, on My Space I think, suggest that I try freezing a little Jell-O with some fruit. Well person I can't remember, you are a genius, this is an awesome snack. It's simple, tasty, and the texture is out of this world. I thought maybe it would have been too jiggly, but it wasn't. It was smooth and fruity, just right. I was also sure to use a canned fruit salad mix so the chucks where nice and small, and didn't dominate one bite. The only problem with the fruit is they all floated at the top so they where kind of stuck together. It may have been nicer to have the fruit dispersed but to be honest the Jell-O on it's own was pretty good.
I think this might be my new favourite homemade frozen treat.
Just Juice
Maybe I shouldn't have saved this one for last, because it really doesn't hold up at all. Sure it taste pretty good (lemonade), and sure it's simple, but maybe I'm just craving a little something extra. I guess the lesson learned is that cool treats don't have to be simple, get up and toss something a little different in your Popsicle mold tray thing. Sure it takes a little more work, but it's worth it I assure you. Having said that if you're lazy, a plain Popsicle is better than a kick in the pants.
