Candy Experiment - Skittles VS Skittles Flavoured Gelatin Dessert

With only one flavour available of this Original Skittles flavoured gelatin dessert, but 5 (or maybe 6) flavours available in the Original Skittles, it got me thinking. What flavour is the "Jello" like treat supposed to be?

Birthday Wish List Part 5 - Jell-O Slime

I would trust this kind of product from a company like Jell-O. After all they pretty much invented the tasty treat with a weird texture industry.

Candy In The Media - Rainbow Jello Awesomeness

I can't tell you how great it is to see these guys cut through the Jello with a tennis racquet.

A Cool Christmas Gingerbread Thing

Over the last few weeks I've been posting various gingerbread house gadgets that help you make the perfect gingerbread house.  Some might argue that cookie cutters that cut the perfect shaped house pieces, or anything else that helps you make the perfect house might be cheating.  Frankly, I've been on the line about that, in some ways I think it's great to have a gadget to help you make a better gingerbread house.  However I understand that some purists might see the harm in not using your hands, and making a few mistakes, so you can learn how to build your very own cookie built architectural dream house.  Today's gadget on the other hand pushes things way too far.  I think if you're going to build a gingerbread house, it's probably cheating to have a cake pan that's chapped exactly like the gingerbread house.  While I can see the fun in using this mold to make a house out of cake or Jello, I think if you plan on using this mold for any kind of cookie like house, you're cheating.

A Cool Christmas Gingerbread Thing

There are really two ways to look at these gingerbread house molds.  You can see them as cheating, I mean you don't have to cut any gingerbread, or create any textures using icing with these molds.  All you have to do is jam you gingerbread into them, bake, and in no time you'll have the pieces for a detailed and textured gingerbread house.  You also don't have to worry about cutting your pieces perfectly.  How many times have you had to fix a gingerbread house on the fly because you made one wall too short?  So maybe these are the cheaters way, but maybe they're also a door to a really creative candy neighborhood.

Why not make a gingerbread house, then make a jelly house, and next to that a chocolate house.  These silicon molds don't limit you to just one material, you can make a house out of anything you like. At the very least out of something that goes fairly solid.  And why limit yourself to desserts, why not take a little mashed potato, and bake these in the oven till the mashed potato goes hard?  There's really lots of choices for you to make the tastiest neighborhood in your neighborhood

A Cool Candy Thing

I'm not an science expert, but my experience leads to me to believe that gummies are water soluble.  That means when they get wet, the disintegrate.  That makes me wonder if gummy shot glasses are really a good idea.  You could however go a little meta and make jello shots in them.

Friday Candy Video

This commercial for Jello Pudding staring Bill Cosby is more far fetched than many of the silly impersonations and parody sketches I've seen done of Bill Cosby selling Jelly Pudding.  I liked Bill Cosby when he was weird, I think he should be weird more often.  I also think I should probably make myself a batch of chocolate Jello pudding as well.

Candy Art - Floppy Jello Buildings

I may have posted about this a while back, but it's worth posting again.  I just love the look of these very floppy buildings.  There's something really silly about the New York skyline when none of the buildings are even remotely straight.
I think this White House would be greatly improved if it had a couple of slices of pineapple floating in it.

Monday's Candy Links

Jello has apparently had problems getting down with the kids, they plan on fixing that problem with something called the "Jello Turtle Sundae".

Do you like the KFC's 12 herbs and spices?  How do you feel about it in cookie form?

Classic/Creative Candy Advertising - Jello Poem

I think I'd rather have a bowl of pudding than a bowl of curds and way... but I think Jack should be a little less of a pig and share his massive bowl of jello with Jane.

Old Candy Critic Articles - Frozen treats I made myself

I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog.  This week I'm posting an article I wrote about freezing some of your favorite liquids, into frozen treats.
Summers coming... Actually this article was written in February with about two feet of snow outside my window, but I'm a little lazy, that and I really don't see any problem eating frozen treats all year round. When I was a kid I used to eat frozen treats before going skating because it would fool my body into thinking it was warmer outside. Sure I could have died of hypothermia but when you want to skate you'll do just about anything.

Rather than deal with the old and slightly melted treats that are left at my local store, I decided to do a bit of experimentation and try and create some frozen treats of my own. Some of these treats worked, others don't, either way I get a nice cool snack before building a great snowman outside.

Pudding Pop

Bill Cosby you're a great man, but unfortunately you weren't great enough to keep the pudding pop on the market. I'm not going to take this lying down though. I'll get myself a package of instant pudding, mix it up and freeze it myself. Guess what, it's exactly the same. Joy of Joys, Mr. Cosby I may not be able to watch you plug my frozen treats, but alas I can enjoy a super smooth pudding pop. I love these things, I could eat them all day long. For my birthday this year I want a brand new freezer so I can eat these and only these every day.

Yogurt, Jam, and Granola

What the heck am I doing, this is some kind of healthy treat! I might actually be improving my health by eating this, and worst of all I'm endorsing it on Candy Critic. Well I'm not really "endorsing" it because it's not the best frozen treat I've ever had. I could do without the granola in particular. It's also a little bit bitter, seeing as my sweet tooth throbs, maybe that's why I don't like it. I do have to say though, for a "good for me" type treat it's pretty tasty, well it beats out celery anyways.

Jell-O and Fruit

I'd never thought of freezing Jell-O until someone, on My Space I think, suggest that I try freezing a little Jell-O with some fruit. Well person I can't remember, you are a genius, this is an awesome snack. It's simple, tasty, and the texture is out of this world. I thought maybe it would have been too jiggly, but it wasn't. It was smooth and fruity, just right. I was also sure to use a canned fruit salad mix so the chucks where nice and small, and didn't dominate one bite. The only problem with the fruit is they all floated at the top so they where kind of stuck together. It may have been nicer to have the fruit dispersed but to be honest the Jell-O on it's own was pretty good.

I think this might be my new favourite homemade frozen treat.

Just Juice

Maybe I shouldn't have saved this one for last, because it really doesn't hold up at all. Sure it taste pretty good (lemonade), and sure it's simple, but maybe I'm just craving a little something extra. I guess the lesson learned is that cool treats don't have to be simple, get up and toss something a little different in your Popsicle mold tray thing. Sure it takes a little more work, but it's worth it I assure you. Having said that if you're lazy, a plain Popsicle is better than a kick in the pants.

Candy Corn Cooking Part 2

Most people's opinion about candy corn is extreme, you either love it or hate it.  The popular opinion I find is to hate it, however I've decided to help out my candy corn loving friends out there by presenting you fun ways cook with, or in honor of, candy corn with a link to a new recipe every day this week.
What better way to celebrate Halloween with your friends then handing out candy corn jello shots.  I'm not sure why they use orange peels as the container, but either way, it'll get you drunk and remind you about when you where a kid all at the same time.

Creepy Pudding Face Guy

Jello pudding really seems to enjoy creeping me out.  They have a giant billboard in New York that either smiles when people are happy (on Twitter) or frowns when they are sad.  Both the frown and the smile are kind of creepy, but the free pudding stuff you can get for following them might be worth it.

Soilent Gelatin

I have two lines with food that I will not cross.  I will not eat an animal that I know for a fact is suffering (for the most part that means I won't eat anything that is still alive), and I will not eat human.  A bunch of scientists have found a way to make human GMO gelatin.  I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Jello Upgrade

This isn't the first time I've mentioned this, but I really think Jello is starting a new comeback.  Not that it went anywhere, but I'm starting to read more and more about artists and fine chefs using Jello to create some pretty fantastic things.  I think it makes for a great medium to create so many shapes, and if you don't mind the slightly slimy texture, it's a fun food to eat.
