I'm Getting Too Old For This

My birthday is this week, and I've decided that I'm okay with what many people call old people's candy. I'm also okay with kids candy as well, but I've come to terms with the fact that my taste is maturing. The other day I found myself going through Twitter, I saw a picture of some peppermints and I was excited at the idea of tasting them. I'm pretty sure that peppermints are not the kind of candy that the young kids are into, so I've accepted that I'm an old man. Fortunately I feel like I'm not too old to continue to eat kids candy, so I don't have to retire this website.

To keep up with all my other old man stuff, follow me on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

You can also buy my comic book, because it would be a nice thing to do on my birthday week.

Birthday Wish List Part 1 - Banana Surprise

I don't really know why the idea of a hollowed out banana filled with either cream or goo appeals to me, but it does.

Birthday Wish List Part 3 - Zolli Pops

I've heard so much about the girl who created a lollipop empire. More importantly I heard about the fact that these lollipops are actually good for your teeth.

Birthday Wish List Part 5 - Jell-O Slime

I would trust this kind of product from a company like Jell-O. After all they pretty much invented the tasty treat with a weird texture industry.

Birthday Wish List Part 7 - Batman Serving Dish

I wish I could say that this would be a subtle way to bring my love of comics to some of the fancy parties we host, but it's not subtle at all.

Birthday Wish List Part 8 - Candy Land

With my love of candy and board games you'd think that I would already have a copy of Candy Land, but I don't. I like this version most of all because it's the retro version.

Birthday Wish List Part 9 - Feed My Ego, Buy Me A Shirt

I'm not proud of myself, but if you bought me a shirt from the Candy Critic store, I'd be really happy. I'd even be happy if you bought one for yourself too. Maybe you could consider one of these new designs by my good friend Tom Yeo.

My Birthday Wish List Part 10 - I Like Star Wars

You could pretty much get me anything Star Wars related and I'll be happy. Get me something that's both Star Wars related and candy related and I'm overjoyed.

Next Monday is my birthday, and I can think of no better way to cut the cake at my birthday than with a rocket engine.

This Week In Candy

Yesterday was my birthday, and for the most part I managed to hold off on the extreme eating portion of this celebration. That was until the night of my birthday.  A group of friends invited me out to an Indian buffet restaurant. I did not know that it was a buffet before we left, but I was pleasantly surprised when we got there.  Then I learned that this Indian restaurant had a pretty decent dessert section at this buffet.  After a big plate of food I figured it was safe to indulge with a few desserts. I made sure I was filled right up, after all it's my birthday.  Then the cake came out, yup, my awesome friends got me a classic birthday cake,it was yummy, the entire quarter of this cake that I ate.  I made it through the whole day without overindulging on my birthday, then my great friends had to ruin it for me. As soon as I finish writing this, I'm going to go lie down for a while.

As for what to expect here at candycritic.org this week, I can tell you that you shouldn't expect much more today, my stomach hurts too much and I just want to go to sleep.  Later this week however you can expect a new episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!! Just in case my stomach wasn't sore enough already.  I'm also working on a special article in my head about sugar taxes.  I was inspired by a study done in Berkley on the subject.  You can check back here to see all this stuff, and keep up with our day to day activities on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

This week's new review is a really unique candy.  I'm not sure if these gummies are something new, but they are new to me. Crunchy Gummies caught my attention, but the candy itself delivered. You can read our latest review right here.

This Week In Candy

The shelves are filled with Easter treats. Every year it seems as though more and more Easter treats seem to be appearing.  It wasn't so long ago that the only Easter treats you could find were chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies, and for a few of us Cadbury Creme Eggs. But now there's so many new treats coming out every year.  Just last weekend I happened to be going to the USA, and I stopped at a Walmart to see what I could find.  I was very lucky to come across a bag of Peeps themed Oreos.

I have to be honest, I wasn't expecting much out of these cookies.  I figured it would simply be the standard vanilla Oreos with the center being dyed pink, but I was wrong.  While the flavour is definitely vanilla, the cream has an extra bonus.  In the cream are little crystals of crunchy sugar, giving these a pretty unique texture.  I can't say that these are my favourite Oreos, but I might like these more than regular marshmallow Peeps.

What else is happening this week at candycritic.org?  Well first of all my birthday is this week, I know this has nothing to do with Candy Critic directly, but maybe a little indirectly.  This is mostly with the fact that it might be a slow week here at Candy Critic.  I'm going to be writing a few things behind the scenes, like the future Canadian candy project I'm working on, but other than that I'm going to take it easy this week. I'll be posting about some of my birthday fun times on Twitter and Facebook.

Don't worry though, we'll still be adding new posts on the Doughnut Project and Snack Facts, our Instagram feed. We're also going to be working on writing a few reviews for later in the year.  Finally, we're working with a certain candy company right now, putting together a contest where we're giving away a whole lot of tasty candy.  You'll have to check back later to find out how you can win.

This week's new review is in celebration of National Strawberry Day, which is today.  It's a review I wrote a while ago, but I think it's appropriate for today.  Click here to read the review that might make you think about berries in the summer.

A "For My Birthday" Candy Thing

Over the last few weeks I've been posting Candy Things that I would love to get for my birthday.  No preasure, I mean it's not like I've ever bought you anything.  But if you feel like paying it forward for all of this free candy information I've been giving you, then maybe this would be a great way to do it.

This week I'm posting something that I think would benefit the whole world, a deep fryer.  There are two ways I think this would help the world.  First of all it would insure that I don't cause fires everywhere that I go.  I love deep frying, but at this point I'm strictly a pan deep fryer, and that can be dangerous.  Secondly I'm going to stop people from deep frying stupid things and eating them.  I'd do this by deep frying stupid things, eating them, then posting on the internet why it was such a stupid idea.

This Week In Candy

Hey we're back!!! Thailand was a great place, and really a food mecca. It isn't until you visit Thailand that you can truly appreciate the word "street food".  Never have I seen so many varieties of food on the street.  This is truly a culture of local food, made fast, but made so well.  There were even some street food vendors with longer lines than some of the restaurants.  I'll have a blog post going up next week with details about all of the food, treats, and junk food we found on this adventure.

Now that we're back, we're getting back to work on our regular projects.  We'll be recording two episodes of the Junk Fud podcast this week.  One will go up later this week, and the second will go up next week.  This week's episode will be our regular installment of Junk Fud News where we'll look back at some of the junk food news that happened in the month of February.  The second podcast will be an episode of Junk Fud On The Road where Allison and I will talk about our trip to Thailand.

This week we're also posting a week long special feature, where we're looking at Jelly Bellies.  Recently Jelly Belly released some new flavours, and they look pretty good, however we think that we can do better.  So we put our money where our mouth is, and this week we're going to show you our awesome ideas for new Jelly Belly flavours.  Every day there will be a new category of flavour that we think will rock your taste buds, are you listening Jelly Belly.

Now that we're back home, Snack Facts, our Instagram feed is back to it's daily schedule. I don't want to give anything away, but this week's Snack Facts is all about birthday cakes.  It might be because someone's birthday is coming up... really soon.  So tune in this week to learn a little history about one of the best parts of any birthday party.  You can follow Snack Facts on our Instagram feed, our Facebook page, and our Twitter feed.

On our Thailand adventure we came across a whole lot of cool treats.  So we figured the best way to celebrate these newly discovered treats would be a review-a-thon.  Everyday this week we'll be posting a new review of a treat that we discovered in Thailand.  The first review is of a very surprising ice cream treat that we discovered in Phuket.  Check out Twitter feed or Facebook page every day this week for more Thai candy reviews, however you can click here to read the first.

This Week In Candy

It's the day after Valentine's Day, and the Stewart household is celebrating something else, today is my father's birthday.  My whole family is very supportive of what I do, but if I had to give credit to any of them for sparking my interest in sweet foods, it's my father.  When I was a kid my father used to take me and my sister out for walks.  Walks were a very important part of our lives, and we would spend hours exploring Toronto, or St Catherines (in Canada).  The reason these walks affect my love of sweets is because my father would always make a stop at the local corner store with us and make sure we had plenty of snacks for the road.  While my father was always a fan of the salty snack, I would always go for the sweet snacks.  We would fill up on treats, and walk around town for ours.  We would explore these two cities, and also explore what was new in the candy world.  To this day I still love walking, and I obviously love candy, a great deal of this comes from these walks that I took with my father when I was a kid.

After that deep note, guess what?  We're not home right now, and if you had my home phone number you'd have to leave a message after the "beep".  As we've mentioned before, we're in Thailand right now.  As of writing this, I'm not really sure what the weather is going to be like, or what the food is going to be like, so this trip might be amazing, or it might be really crappy.  When we get back home I'll make sure to write up a full report, but for now I'm sure we're just exploring this awesome Asian country.

What comes with us being in Thailand?  We'll first of all, Snack Facts is on the road.  Rather than post our regular daily Snack fact on our Instagram feed, we're going to post crazy fun things we discover about snacks as we travel through Thailand.  That means that some days you're going to get a million fun Thai snack facts, and other days maybe none.  It all really depends on what I find, and my current internet connection. Make sure to check out our Thailand Snack Facts on our Instagram feed, Facebook page, or Twitter feed.

Along with the Snack Facts on the road, being away means that we're not going to be adding new reviews while we're gone.  I'm pretty sure however that we'll have some amazing new Thai candies to review when we get back, and maybe even a review-a-thon.

Candy Art - Gummy Bears Sweats

With my birthday coming  up in March (the 5th to be exact) if anybody want's to buy me one of these awesome sweatshirts, I wont object.  I'm not sure if I can think of any event, or public place, that I could wear one of these, but I just think it would be cool to have.
