If you love cheese and you love chocolate cookies with cream in them, then you might be a little disappointed.

Junk Fud and You - Milk Chocolate VS Regular Oreos (Or What Flavour Are Regular Oreos?)
at
11:00 AM
Today I decided I would try and do a fun taste test between milk chocolate Oreo cookies and the classic Oreo cookies, what happened next had me questioning everything I know about Oreo cookies.

Candy Experiment - Coca-Cola VS Oreos VS Coca-Cola Flavoured Oreos VS Oreo Flavoured Coca-Cola
at
10:00 AM
When Coca-Cola and Oreo do a collaboration, it gets very confusing. Here's my attempt at sorting it all out, and maybe coming up with some kind of idea about how well this collaboration worked.

A Thick Cookie
at
10:00 AM
The search is over for me. I've actually been looking for these cookies for several months without any indication that they actually existed. My main search took place in Canada, since that's where I live, and right now I'm convinced they've never been sold here. I figure there's some kind of health and safety guideline that does not allow for that much icing on a cookie. I've also previously searched in upstate New York with no luck. I had to explore a bizarre chain of truck stops in the mid western United States to find the Oreo cookie that feel too thick to be real. Strangely however, I didn't mind it that much and even found a little bit of balance.
Check out my full super thick Oreo review right now.
You can see some of the other fun things I found on a recent trip to the USA by following me on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

I'm Not Happy With Icing, The Oreo Filling Challenge
at
10:00 AM
I decided that the cream in the middle of the Oreo wasn't good enough, even when you flavour it. So my goal is to find out what else could work in an Oreo, the results are both positive and surprising.

A Christmas Special You Don't Want To Miss - The Candy Cane Shiv
at
10:00 AM
I was eating a candy cane the other day when I poked myself in the back of the throat with the really sharp end that had formed. It got me thinking about life in general, then I thought about all the little kids (and immature adults) that might be injured by these very dangerous candies. So, I decided to investigate the candy cane shiv, and the results are very fascinating.

My Candy/Junk Food Chrsitmas Wishlist - Oreo Candy Canes
at
12:00 PM
I realized that not one thing on my wish list so far had anything to do with Christmas. So I asked my friends to suggest a few ideas and the one that stuck out for me was Oreo candy canes. I'm not sure if I'd enjoy eating an Oreo flavoured candy cane, but it's just nice that it's not Oreo making a candy cane flavoured cookie?..

Have The People At Oreo Gone Mad?!!
at
10:00 AM
When I was a kid there was one kind of Oreo, it had chocolate cookies and a white icing center. At some point in my childhood the Oreo Double Stuff was introduced with the idea that there was twice as much cream as there was before. This was to be Oreo's first foray into changing their cookies, as well as into some controversy. There was a theory that Oreo simply reduced the amount of cream in their classic cookie, and the more expensive double stuff was in fact just the old version of the regular Oreo.
Slowly Oreo started to add more versions of their cookies onto the market. Golden Oreos are an Oreo with vanilla cookies instead of chocolate. Uh-Oh Oreos were a vanilla cookie with a chocolate cream center. Most of these variations used either chocolate or vanilla cookies and chocolate or vanilla cream. At this point things weren't out of hand, chocolate and vanilla seemed like an area where Oreo could venture safely.
Somewhere between 2006 and 2010 things seem to have fallen off the rails. As usual it appears to have originated in either Japan or Canada. Both of these countries are often the source of strange flavored things becoming the norm in the western world. You can always reference potato chips in Canada and Kit Kit bars in Japan for a better idea of the phenomenon. Canada often introduces not extremely strange versions, but slightly different flavours to the American market, it's easy with their close proximity to the USA. Japan on the other hand is legendary for their extreme flavour varieties of classic treats, and on the Internet these crazy flavours slowly find their way into American homes.
By 2010 it appears that the western world had jumped on board the freaky Oreo cookie bandwagon and things have been getting weirder and weirder ever since. It seems that the folks at Oreo have been given cart blanch and can pretty much come up with any flavour choices they want. Gone are the days when chocolate and vanilla are the only two flavours allowed. Today it seems that Oreo cookies come up with some kind of crazy new cookie every month. Pumpkin spice, blueberry pie, and orange creamcicle are just a few examples of some of the limited editor flavours we've seen so far.
But much like the introduction the double stuff cookie, these varieties have stirred up a bit of controversy. In my circle of friends the Oreo fireworks cookie (an Oreo with pop rocks like candy in the icing) was the topic of a huge debate. Some calling it a travesty of nature, others calling it the greatest thing ever created. Then there was the Oreo Peeps debacle, something that affected me personally. These Oreo cookies made headlines when it was found out that the pink colouring of the icing caused a certain colour shift in a solid biological function. Yup, it made your poop pink.
I had already eaten a few of the cookies before I learned about this, but I didn't check my bathroom colours at the time. Fortunately I had more than half a bag left when I did learn about this issue, and I can tell you that the story was true... And a little disturbing. While this was the big story that broke about these cookies, the thing I found odd about the Oreo Peeps was what they did to your mouth. I realized that every time I ate a few of these cookies, I would spit up pink every time I brushed my teeth, for a few days. So even if it was 2 or 3 days since eating them I would find that when I brushed my teeth I would spit out pink.
Oreo is on the edge of crossing over into dangerous territory with these crazy flavour, a line that's been crossed by a few candy companies trying to ride the wave of crazy flavour varieties. After that line is crossed, few survive. This line is crossed when a company has obviously run out of logical ideas when it comes to flavours. After this point these companies start to "get creative" and often weird for the sake of being weird. Kit Kat has weathered this storm and built an industry on their strange flavours, but a few other candy companies have fallen down that hole and not done well. The true indication of this is when Oreo decides they want to try savory flavours instead of sweet.
When you cross that line, you may find that some of your die hard fans have fallen out of favour. The news release about your new wacky flavour doesn't get the rush to the stores, but instead gets ridicule or a ho-hum type reaction. While the debate among my friends rages about whether or not Oreo has jumped the shark with these wacky flavours, I've found myself on the side of enjoying them. I've enjoyed the creative ideas, I've even enjoyed the flavour of most of them. So far Oreo, I'm on your side, but be careful. One day I may not rush out the store to try your latest creation.

This Week In Candy
at
10:00 AM
The shelves are filled with Easter treats. Every year it seems as though more and more Easter treats seem to be appearing. It wasn't so long ago that the only Easter treats you could find were chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies, and for a few of us Cadbury Creme Eggs. But now there's so many new treats coming out every year. Just last weekend I happened to be going to the USA, and I stopped at a Walmart to see what I could find. I was very lucky to come across a bag of Peeps themed Oreos.
I have to be honest, I wasn't expecting much out of these cookies. I figured it would simply be the standard vanilla Oreos with the center being dyed pink, but I was wrong. While the flavour is definitely vanilla, the cream has an extra bonus. In the cream are little crystals of crunchy sugar, giving these a pretty unique texture. I can't say that these are my favourite Oreos, but I might like these more than regular marshmallow Peeps.
What else is happening this week at candycritic.org? Well first of all my birthday is this week, I know this has nothing to do with Candy Critic directly, but maybe a little indirectly. This is mostly with the fact that it might be a slow week here at Candy Critic. I'm going to be writing a few things behind the scenes, like the future Canadian candy project I'm working on, but other than that I'm going to take it easy this week. I'll be posting about some of my birthday fun times on Twitter and Facebook.
Don't worry though, we'll still be adding new posts on the Doughnut Project and Snack Facts, our Instagram feed. We're also going to be working on writing a few reviews for later in the year. Finally, we're working with a certain candy company right now, putting together a contest where we're giving away a whole lot of tasty candy. You'll have to check back later to find out how you can win.
This week's new review is in celebration of National Strawberry Day, which is today. It's a review I wrote a while ago, but I think it's appropriate for today. Click here to read the review that might make you think about berries in the summer.

This Week In Candy
at
9:00 AM
I'm feeling pretty ill today. Last week we had to live in "temporary" accommodations as our house was being work on. Then we get home for about 2 days, and I get food poisoning. It's one of those instances where there is no doubt in my mind that it's food poisoning. The good news about having food poisoning is that it makes you think about what you eat. I've been thinking about my diet, the world's diet, just food in general over the last few days. For the most part it's been random thinking with little real substance, however I did come up with one question that I can't figure out. Why don't we eat more acorns?
This week at candycritic.org we're continuing all kinds of projects. My plans to put together podcasts has been more planning than executing, and I've found it difficult to organize. So I've decided to try to record a few solo shows this week to see how it goes. I've got two ideas I want to work on, so if all goes well I should have a show or two to post in the next week. We're also still working out the bugs of our Periscope show called "VS". Link up with us on Periscope by looking for "candycritic" to help us compare some classic treats.
This week on Snack Facts, our Instagram feed, we're looking at cereal. Some of you may argue that cereal is not really a snack, but I'm not feeling well and it seems to be the only thing I can eat right now. So check out our feed and learn something new about the crunchy breakfast treat every day. If you're not on Instagram, don't worry, you can also follow Snack Facts on our Twitter feed and Facebook page as well.
This week's review is proof positive that good candy companies can't always work well together. Click here to read the review that disapointed me.

An Oreo Cooking Candy Thing
at
9:00 AM
I love baking with cookies. When you bake with cookies it's like making a double dessert. You have the cookies, which are a dessert unto themselves, then you have the dessert you've made with the cookies, like a nice Oreo cheesecake. I wonder if it would be possible to make an Oreo cookie cookie. Take the ingredients in an Oreo and make another kind of cookie, or even a similar cookie to the original. This cookie idea has just blown my mind.

This Week In Candy
at
9:00 AM
This week at Candy Critic we've got two main goals, writing and taking pictures. We just finished a fun shoot on the subject of OREO cookies, I'll explain more about why we did that later. We also have a shoot planned on the subject of dates (the fruit not the social interaction) and sprinkles. We were hoping to get an article up this week to go with the sprinkle photos, unfortunately it looks like that's going to take a little more time, but it should be up next week instead. Writing wise it's all about keeping up with this blog, and our social media sites, writing a few travel pieces, and most certainly working on the book.
Last week we also started a new project on our social media pages (Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr) on the topic of licorice. As you know I was greatly inspired on my recent trip to Holland, and I decided to try and get myself to like licorice (I normally hate the stuff). I figured the best way to do this was through repetition. So until July 4th, I'll be eating one piece of Dutch licorice every day. I've got a bag with various different salt levels and strengths, and I'll just randomly pick one out and eat it every night. Every time I do this, I'll post a picture and let you know how I feel, maybe I'll even use emoticons (this is a jump for me).
The OREO cookie shoot today was all for this week's posts on our Intagram feed called Snack Facts. This week we'll look at the classic cookie with the cream in the middle. If you're interested in having fun Snack Facts sent to you every day, make sure to follow us on Instagram. If you don't use Instagram, you can also follow Snack facts on our Twitter feed and Facebook page as well.
This week's new review on candycritic.org is a Japanese candy that lived up to every expectation. If you like your lemon candies to live up to their sour reputation, you might want to check out this review. Click here to read the latest super sour Japanese review.

Be Rational
at
9:00 AM
Remembrance day was just a few days ago, in Canada this day is about remembering all of the Canadians that gave their lives, and their time to keep Canada awesome. Recently I had the oportunity to sample a small part of the life of someone serving abroad. I was given a Canadian military ration pack to try out. For those that don't know what a ration pack is, it is a bag of food that should be able to give the average soldier substanance for one day. Historically ration packs have been given a bad rap, it's been said that the basic food is just enough to keep someone alive, but nothing to keep them happy. However, with the advancement in food science and packaging, ration packs have become fairly sofisticated, and now offer some pretty fancy meals to soldiers that may have nothing but a fire (or sometimes not even that) to heat up their meals.
The pack I received is for a soldier that notionally has some way of boiling water. The pack contained a pretty wide range of foods, from a small Werthers candy to suck on, to a bag/box of something that claims to be sweet and sour pork. It also comes with various powedered fruit drinks, coffee, tea, and a bag of Oreos. I pretty much munched down the Werthers and Oreos imediately after opening the package. They were exactly what you might expect, mini Oreos and a nice smooth butterscotch candy to suck on. I'll probably never drink the coffee, and the tea and powedered drink were un-eventful.
The real highlight of this meal is the sweet and sour pork, or at least that's what was written in huge letter on the box that all of this comes in. To prepare the pork you have to boil it in water for about 10 minutes. I can assure you that this has nothing to do with "cooking" anything, and it's more about warming it up. The side dish of rice involves taking some boiling water and pouring it into an envelope, sealing it closed, then letting it sit for 10 minutes. I assume that the bags you cook these dishes in are also designed to be eaten out of, but since I was at home, and since I wanted to photograph them, I decided it might be better to serve everything on a plate.
It's not the most appealing looking plate of food, but it smelled pretty good. My assumption throughout the whole process of making this food was that the pork would be disgusting and the rice would be tolerable. I was wrong. The pork, while not being the best asian meal I've ever eaten, wasn't that bad. The meat was pretty tough, but what can I expect from something that can sit in a bag for months. The sauce was actually pretty tasty, and I the chunks of fruit and vegetables throughout the sauce was a really nice surprise. The rice on the other hand was horible. I can't say that I've ever tasted rice that was actually inedible, until today. It wasn't just the texture, but the "butter" flavour just ruined everything. I think the rice would have worked out so much better if it was just plain rice.
For dessert I was offered pears in a syrup. For some reason I imagined some kind of poached pear served with a caramel like syrup. I really thought it would have been something fancy, but it wasn't. What I got was a bowl of pears that looked identical to the types of pears one might find out of a can at the grocery store. It wasn't bad, but it could have been better. I think a little spice, or some kind of caramelized flavour could take these typical pears and made them something special. I'm not saying I wouldn't be grateful for these if I was stuck out in a jungle with nothing else, but why aren't the people that serve our country entitled to something with a bit of extra flavour.
The next day I decided to treat myself to the "lunch" portion of the ration pack. Or at least that's what I assume this is supposed to be. Frankly it didn't really have much explanation and the peanut butter, jam, and pita really didn't go with anything else in the pack. I decided to make myself a peanut butter and jam pita lunch, and it was OK. The delivery method was a little messy, but once I squished the pitas together my poor peanut butter and jam squirting skills went unnoticed. The great thing about this sandwich is that it reminded me of being a kid. When I was a kid I loved making pita sandwiches, I liked pita bread more than sliced bread. This simple ration pack made me feel like I was a kid again, back home. I sure hope that the folks that eat these packs overseas get the same feeling, because they deserve a little bit of home comfort.
