Tom's Look At The Visual Side Of Snacks And Candy - Ms Jones In Chocolate

Today’s column relates to snacks and candy in a rather roundabout manner. The photos below accompanied an article about designer Tom Hingston. He was hired by musician/performer Grace Jones to put together promotional material for her album “Hurricane”. After considering some possibilities relating to manufacturing, Hingston and Jones settled on working with a high-end chocolatier in Derbyshire England to make casts of Jones’s various body parts in chocolate.

The idea was to convey with a touch of humour, that Grace Jones was in control of the making of her identity.

Once the chocolatier received moulds, the team of couture chocolatiers sculpted life-size figures made of chocolate. They were later auctioned according to the article in Elephant (Winter 2010-2011) written by Marc Valli.

The photo of above shows Grace Jones in the factory setting, acting the part of the artist manufacturing her chocolate avatars.

Sadly, the article did not give any details as to who acquired the life-size chocolate versions of Ms Jones. It would certainly make a unique piece of pop star memorabilia!

Best of all if you happen to be having a dinner party and you didn't have anything to sweeten your after dinner coffee you'd be OK.

The sheer size and detail of his work is fantastic.

Gummies Art Go Boom!

I came across Chandra Bocci's awesome art collection and I was blow away by her use of everyday objects to create some amazing effects.  Of course, I was particularly taken by her use of sweet treats, in particular this piece called "Gummi Big Bang".

Candy Art - Marshmallow Creations

 I love candy art in all of its forms.  I like when people make art inspired by candy, and I like it when people make candy into art, like these awesome marshmallow creations by Alejandra at The Marshmallow Studio.

 I like the paws on this little guy.

 I wonder if the marshmallow is pineapple flavoured too?

 This is really cool, a miniature cake made out of marshmallow.

Jello Upgrade

This isn't the first time I've mentioned this, but I really think Jello is starting a new comeback.  Not that it went anywhere, but I'm starting to read more and more about artists and fine chefs using Jello to create some pretty fantastic things.  I think it makes for a great medium to create so many shapes, and if you don't mind the slightly slimy texture, it's a fun food to eat.

A while back I posted an entry about the 3D sugar printer by Evil Mad Scientist Lab that could make 3D objects based off designs out of sugar. Boing Boing just posted a blog about their newest updated printer the 6000 model. Looks really cool.
