Christmas Candy In The Media - Making Ribbon Candy

I've always had mixed feelings about Christmas ribbon candy. I like the way it looks, and obviously it's fun to watch people make it, but I never really considered it a great candy to eat.

This jawbreaker would take me a month to get through, it takes the blowtorch just over a minute.

This Week In Candy

Every so often Allison has to go on a business trip.  Sometimes I accompany Allison on these trips.  Sometimes I end up checking out all of the local attractions and sites, but sometimes... Sometimes I lock myself in the hotel room and work on my writing.  I might work on my latest book, I may write a few blogs, I might even work on a few articles about travel. I generally just try and catch up on all the writing that I've procrastinated about over the last few months (or maybe years).  So here I am, in a hotel room writing.  The idea of locking yourself in a hotel to "write" is a very romantic notion, it sometimes doesn't really end up being that romantic, but I almost always get some work done.

So what does that mean for anybody reading this blog?  Well it means that there will be some content in the future. I'm going to polish up a few articles that I'm posting later this summer.  In particular I'm going to write a series on treats that I have a huge number of varieties (like Kit Kat), and I'm also going to write a glossary of terms in the candy world.  Both of these should be going online later this summer.  I'm also going to write a few episodes of Junk Fud History, our podcast all about the history of certain junk foods.  Finally I'm polishing up a few recipes that I'll post with the monthly installment of the Dessert Club (posted right here on this very blog).

This week things should be fairly normal, except for the fact that I'll be posting about my hotel lock down on our social media sites.  So far it's pretty much just me sitting at a laptop, but I'm sure craziness will ensue, after all, housekeeping could come by at any moment...  Also, later this week we'll be posting a new episode of our hi-larious YouTube show Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!! This week Chris (that's me) tries to eat a basket of random brown lumps.

This week on Snack Facts, our Instagram feed, we're staring into the rainbow.  We're looking at food colouring (or as you Americans would spell "food coloring"). Every day this week we'll post an interesting fact about the things that change the colour of our foods.  You can follow snack facts on Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook.

Even though we're away, we still have a new review for you.  This week we're looking at a variety of Aero bar, the strawberry Aero.  I'm never really sure if candy companies are trying to "improve" their bars, or just put out a second rate copy.  Find out where I stand when it comes to this particular treat by clicking here.

A Colorful Candy Thing

All this month we're featuring some cool candy t-shirts.  This week we've picked out the most obvious choice for t-shirts, anything M&Ms.  This is one brand that's not afraid to get out into the clothing market.  It's no surprise though, because it works.  With mascots so colourful, it only makes sense to take this brand outside of the candy world.  Best of all they have some pretty cool characters attached to each colour.  I'd like to get a set of these t-shirts and wear whatever colour suits my mood, however I think I'd wear out the yellow t-shirt very quickly.

Candy in the Media

Watching candy get made is always entertaining, it makes me glad I don't write a blog about hot dogs, because no one wants to watch them get made.  I'm impressed that the Razzles go from powder to solid by sheer pressure alone.  I'm glad this is a video, because if I was in the factory I think I'd want to jump into the boxes of finished Razzels and just swim around like Scrooge McDuck swimming through his money vault.

A Blingy Candy Decorating Thing

How would you like a bright gold chocolate cake?  It seems like the worst and best idea ever.  There's something inherently wrong about eating a shinny piece of cake, but it also sounds like something I'd really like to try.  And who says you have to limit your gold edible spray to baked goods, why not cover your dinner in gold, or maybe your bacon and eggs.  There really is no limit to the things you can brighten up with this strange product.

Candy In The Media

M&M's really played the whole brown M&M thing for adults.  I'm pretty sure as a kid I never thought about my candy having an active social or sex life.  As it turns out, some advertising creative person does, and they should be locked up for it.  I'm no prude, but I have no interest in knowing where Mini M&Ms come from.

A Cool Candy Thing

With the cold weather here, it's about time to think about how to keep warm.  Why not drape the most important part of your body in a stylish M&M's hat (or as they call it in my home town a "toque").  I'd never thought about how well these characters work as hats, after all they're round and colourful, and heads are round and look good when covered in colourful fabrics.  So what candy would make for good mittens or scarfs?

A Cool Candy Thing

While I love the idea of making your own gummy candy, I think this toy would be greatly improved if it came with molds to make shapes of gummies that weren't so common.  It would be even cooler if they offered the opportunity to customize molds.  Having said that, making your own colours of gummies might be really fun too, particularly since I've always wanted to taste a brown gummy bear.

A Cool Candy Thing

I have mixed feelings about Play-Doh food themed play sets.  I think that they're really fun to play with, and I've spent hours enjoying myself doing just that.  The problem I have with them is the temptation to bite into anything that I make.  Play-Doh smells so good, and when you make it up to look like yummy food, it's just too hard to resist.  Unfortunately Play-Doh doesn't taste as good as it looks or smells.

Candy Art Posters From bewarethecheese.com

To shoot this photograph, I bought about 3 lbs of gummy bears.  I set up the photograph, took a few shots, and proceeded to eat as many of these gummy bears as I could.  While I really like the colours, shapes, and stories I can tell with candy photos, it's also really fun to eat the candy when the shoot is done.

Click here to check out some candy themed greeting cards too.

Pixelated Gummy Bear Shirts All Week - Part Green

All this week I've been posting the different variations of pixelated gummy bear shirts that I designed.  The one colour I avoided was white.  I'm not sure how well that would work on a t-shirt, particularly a white one.  I may get creative with it later, but for now I think I'll just stick with the bright colours.

Click here to check out all of the shirts we have available.

Friday Candy Video

Astro Pops... You've changed!!!  Several of these commercials show Astro Pops of different colours and flavours.  I can't remember if I've ever seen anything accept the classic yellow, red, and blue combination, but video evidence can't be wrong.  Does anybody remember these other flavours?

A few people commented about how much they love candy dots, and even mentioned that they liked the photo of candy dots that I posted yesterday on This Week In Candy.  Well wouldn't you know it, our sister site bewarethecheese.com is selling posters of that photo.  You can also get it in limited prints and greeting cards as well.  This is truly one of the strangest, yet most beautiful retro candies ever.
