One of the debates I have with myself when it comes to reviewing candy is weather or not I should consider the candy's package. In some cases it seems vitally important to mention it because it's part of the candy, but most of the time it's not really that important, but it might be the reason I bought the candy in the first place. The two reasons I buy a candy is either because I had heard of it somewhere else (either a friend or the internet may have mentioned it), or because the package has attracted me.
It could be as simple as the correct words on a package, "lasagna potato chips" for example, or it could be some kind of creepy cartoon on the package. Sometimes it's the little window on the package that shows me what the candy looks like. I think I'm just going to have to start dropping this whole idea of not reviewing a candy based on its package. It will likely never be the focus of the review, but I think it's an important part of any candy.

Most Notable Candy We Ate In 2017 - Crunchy Gummies
at
11:00 AM
It's not often that I'm surprised by a gummy candy, particularly when it comes to texture. It's even more rare that I'm surprised by a gummy candies texture, and I like it a lot. This was truly one of the biggest surprises I got out of a candy this year, and I'm hoping for some surprises like this in 2018. I'm also realistic, because chances are that there are going to be some horrible surprises in store for me this year as well.

This Week In Candy
at
9:00 AM
This past weekend our sister site bewarethecheese.com had an art show opening. The show had two themes, food and travel. When it comes to food you had to know that candy was well represented. An entire wall of the show was dedicated to gummy bears. The show ends tonight, the reviews of the show have been very positive, and everybody is happy with the turn out.
This week we're starting off one of our many new projects, it's a dessert club. Every so often we're going to post a blog with a recipe of one of our favorite desserts that we love to cook. This week we're baking our famous banana bread. We'll document the day of baking, even if it doesn't work out (as baking can sometimes). We're hoping that you might have some recipe ideas we can try as well. We're looking for fairly simple, but very tasty ideas.
This week on Snack Facts, our Instagram feed, we're going to have a bit of a mix of facts. No theme this week, just some random snack facts about all kinds of treats. So check our Instagram feed every day this week and learn something new about the food you snack on. Don't use Instagram, don't worry, we'll also post Snack Facts on our Facebook page and Twitter feed as well.
Last week we posted a review-a-thon all about the snacks we found on our African adventure. This week's new review is a treat we picked up on our way home from the adventure, at the airport. One of the interesting facts about this Toblerone bar is that you can only get it at the airport (and I mean it's available at almost every airport I've ever stepped foot into). So next time you fly, you might want to pick one up. Click here to read the review.

International Retro Candy Commercials - Part 2 - Greece
at
1:00 PM
This might be the greatest idea ever for interactive salty snacks. Why didn't they try selling these in other parts of the world? Why don't they sell them now? Why won't the company that used to make them send me a bag right now, so I can run around my house dressed as a vampire with crunchy puffy teeth?
All this week I'm posting videos featuring retro candy commercials from all over the world.

It's National Butter crunch Day!!!
at
9:00 AM
If I was to ask you to identify what "Butter crunch" was, could you do it? It's not really a popular name for a treat that's extremely popular. I think butter crunch is pretty much the same thing as peanut brittle, only you're not locked down with the kind of nut you choose. More importantly butter crunch seems to allow for a chocolate topping, although I'm not sure if it's mandatory. I wonder if the stuff inside a Butterfinger, Crispy Crunch, or Skor Bar can be considered butter crunch? If so, then how does Toffee fit into the equation?

Crunchy Nutella!.. Sort Of.
at
2:30 PM
I recently discovered what might be the next evolution in chocolate hazelnut spreads. Surprisingly it didn't come from our friends at Nutella, instead it came from Merenda brand hazelnut spread. I've had Merenda in the past, and it's pretty good, but this new version takes it into a new place.
This new version of Merenda is crunchy. It's a brilliant idea that I'm surprised hasn't come up before. The main brilliance of this is the fact that it's made crunchy with bits of hazelnut. I could see some chocolate spread makers using other nuts, like peanuts, instead of hazelnuts, and that would be just wrong.
These little chunks of hazelnut add so much to this spread. The nut itself is a softer nut, so it works really well with the smooth spread. I think a peanut might be too hard, and anything like an almond would be way too hard. Best of all, it really adds a hint more hazelnut to the mix. Most of the time when you're eating a hazelnut spread, you're really thinking of chocolate, in this case the nutty texture and flavour are increased and it makes for a really great spread. I highly recommend you give it a try.

Salty New Review
at
10:00 AM
People often ask me what kind of candy I review on Candy Critic, and I give them a list. I like to review hard candy, gum, chocolate, cakes, cookies, chips... Most of the time I'm stopped at this point and told that chips (and other salty snacks) are not candy. I guess I use the word candy in a pretty broad sense, but I make the rules, so salty snacks on Candy Critic, are considered candy.

Friday's Candy Links
at
9:00 AM
I like it when a candy company puts serious thought into their boxes, but only if they're putting more thought into the candy.
So what does this article about a new technology in candy panning have to do with your candy fix? Well it might improve the crunch on your gum balls.
Candy as a marketing tool, as long as people remember to write down your phone number before they eat your edible business card, it's great.

Aw Nuts!
at
2:44 PM
Mental Floss posted some quick facts about your favorite nuts. Did you know that a Filbert and a Hazelnut are in fact different nuts? More importantly did you know that the reason most people think they're the same nut is a nut marketing conspiracy?

Gummy Review Week Continues Yet Another Day Still
at
3:54 PM
Wow, I was so busy today doing all kinds of stuff that I almost forgot to post todays gummy review. That would be a shame too because if I had forgotten to publish it today I would have had to publish it tomorrow and pretended that I published it today. I mean you might not have noticed, but I would have had to live with the guilt of lying, and that's not cool.

Now I seem to remember a few months back, it being peanut butter lovers month. It would appear that the peanut butter manufacturers really go for these holidays celebrating their product.

Learn About Apples
at
12:12 PM
Although I'm not a big fan of fake apple flavours, I am a huge fan of apples for cooking and apples to eat. The problem I often come across is that when I'm at the store I only know what to do with a few of the varieties available. I often find myself crunching into a really sour apple, or attempting to cook one that turns into instant mush. Well fortunately I came across this great chart that tells me all I need to know about how to use an apple.
