This week on our Cool Candy Thing - Movie Edition, we're looking at movies for adults. While I don't suggest anybody search "adult movies candy" on Google, since you'll likely come up with very adult themes. It is interesting to note that even the non-XXX rated adult movies about candy seem to really focus on the relationship between sex and candy. It seems that as you grow older candy is supposed to represent passion instead of wholesome fun. I've always seen candy as a way to stay young and child like, but it appears that many filmmakers see it as a bridge to sex.
Chocolat
I have to admit that I haven't seen either film that I'm mentioning today. However, of the two, this is the one I'd most like to see. I enjoy the work of Johnny Depp, and the basic concept of this movie seems fairly entertaining.
Consuming Passion
From what I've read, this movie was written by some of the members of Monty Python and that's a plus in my book. While the idea of a man that accidentally puts people into their chocolates sounds interesting, I'm not sure if I really want to see this movie, as it looks a little cheesy to me.

I think of all of the candy companies in the world, Chupa Chups has probably used the idea of celebrity to sell their candy more than anyone else in the candy business. That got me thinking, is there a celebrity that if I saw them eating a particular food, I too would eat it because of their fame? I'd probably sample a treat if a celebrity chef that I knew and respected endorsed a particular treat. However, I can't think of any actor or singer that I would blindly follow their opinion when it comes to candy. Is there any celebrity you would trust?

Did you know that Salvador Dali had a hand in designing the Chupa Chups lollipop logo.
This is his version of the logo.
And this is the current version. It just goes to show the commercial art is truly as fine and fine art.

Breast milk lollipops, I was going to post this under "Stuff I Want To Try", but I don't really want to try it.
Would you drink a 20 year old can of cola? I wouldn't, I once sampled a 10 year old can of root beer, and I couldn't drink the stuff for years afterwards.
This might be the best idea ever for Poptarts, why aren't they making them then?
Our friends at Madelaine chocolate in New York got hit pretty hard by hurricane Sandy, but it looks like they'll be back up and running in June.
Pez just announced that they're going to release special edition Harry Potter Pez dispensers, I'm thinking it's about 3 years too late.
Looking refresh yourself and cool off this summer, but you also love Italian food, well I have the perfect solution.
Healthy chocolate is really trendy right now, does that mean fine quality dark chocolate full of flavour, or chocolate filled with chemicals to make it "less fat" and "no sugar".
It appears that the glazed donut sandwich has officially gone mainstream in the USA.
Rock bands are notorious for demanding special foods backstage, although if I was famous, I'd ask for what Marilyn Manson wants.
Not sure what to do with the ice cream you left out all afternoon? Well don't throw it out, here's some ways you can transform your ice cream soup into other tasty treats.
Here's a great collection of stock photographs of people that "don't know how to eat popsicles".
Have you heard that the Canadian 100 dollar bill smells like maple syrup? Can anyone confirm this?
Computer programmer takes some time off to work at a chocolate factory, so which job is better?

I've always enjoyed the music of Alicia Keys, and I've always enjoyed the antics of the 1980's TV series the Gummy Bears (for obvious reasons). Is there any way I could enjoy both of these together?

This commercial for Jello Pudding staring Bill Cosby is more far fetched than many of the silly impersonations and parody sketches I've seen done of Bill Cosby selling Jelly Pudding. I liked Bill Cosby when he was weird, I think he should be weird more often. I also think I should probably make myself a batch of chocolate Jello pudding as well.

Old Candy Critic Articles - Gum-o-fun Part 2
at
12:00 PM
I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog. This week I'm posting the second part of an article all about some of the prizes that come with your gum. Last week I posted the first part with a few other gums that I sampled.
So you got yourself a nickel? Well not only are you ready to enjoy a neat gum chewing treat but you may enjoy a little entertainment too. Since you only seem to have one nickel and you can only get one of these treats, the folks at Candy Critic want to help you pick out what could be the most important decision of the next five minutes. We're going to open a new door into a world of bubble blowing fun. You've trusted us with your candy choices, now it's time to take a look at entertainment too. So let's look at which one of these gums is both entertaining and tasty.
Looney Tunes
The Gum
Since we all know that there is nothing natural in these gums, at least they should make them interesting. The gum was white and the taste was kind of flavourless. It tasted like.., it didn’t have any taste at all.

The Prize
I love the Looney Tunes characters and the representation in this sticker ain't too shabby. This prize is keeper I’m going to stick it to my sketchbook right now.
Spice Girls
I'm not really sure when the flavour ended with this gum, only because it really didn't start. This gum had the strangest flavour and I didn’t really like it that much. It could have been that my gum was a little stale, or just that the gum had no flavour at all. It would have been cool if they decided to give their gum some spice instead of just being bland.
Chew Time : 4:07
The Prize
Being a guy in my late 20s (now late 30s), you might think that the idea of having a Spice Girls Sticker would make me feel silly. I have to admit; I'm going to stick this on my notebook right now. Gotta love the Spice Girls.
WCW Gum
The Gum
Stale, this gum is so stale. The WCW no longer exists, so if you find this gum, it will be stale. It does however taste kind of strawberry-like but the strawberry flavour is a little too fake for my liking.
Chew Time : 4:23
The Prize
Dated, but fun is the best way to describe this sticker. I love getting merchandise from wrestlers that have either passed their prime, or that no one remembers. That's what makes this prize kind of neat, but it may not be for everyone.

They claim that this is the "first" chocolate hotel in the world, but I'm not too sure about that.
I think I've mentioned Unreal Candy here in the past, but I'll mention them again in hopes of getting some samples.
You may not think much about pouring some syrup or honey on your pancakes, but trust me, there's a lot going on.
As it turns out, the late Margaret Thatcher may have invent soft serve ice cream, love her or hate her... nope, if she helped invent soft serve ice cream I'm going to love her.
Pearson's Candy factory in St Paul opens it's doors to tours.
Here's a great look at the Hershey's test kitchens, it's the kind of place many bakers and chocolatiers would love to work.
You probably already know that chocolate is good for your heart and your brain, but here's an article on the subject just in case.
Someone stole 5 metric tons of Nutella, what kind of evil people are there in the world?
Some people love white chocolate, others feel it's wrong to even call it chocolate.
Someone has made the worlds largest tub of ice cream, now someone has to make a spoon, a giant bottle of chocolate sauce, and I'm set.
Queen Elisabeth visits the Mars factory, I'm sure she took home a few treats for the kids.
Got yourself an old hard drive? Want some cotton candy? There is a solution just for you.

I never really made the association between the Easter Bunny and Bugs Bunny. I guess one could make the crossover in your head, but it seems strange. I think it has to do with Bugs Bunny's character, he doesn't seem like the kind of bunny that would get joy from delivering candy to little kids.

Spider In My Ice Cream
at
2:00 PM
I don't know if this is a new trend around the world, or a trend that's just here in Europe/Greece, but I keep coming across movie themed ice cream. I'm not sure if this is a valuable marketing tool for either the ice cream or the movie, but it must be doing something right because it's all over the place. I assume that the flavour of the ice cream is random, since I'm not even sure what flavour "Spider Man" would be. I'm also wondering if it's a good idea to cross market food, and bugs that you would never actually want in that food.

Monday's Candy Links
at
9:00 AM
When you mix internet memes and cakes, you get some of the strangest creations ever.
Two famous people that apparently eat a lot of junk food on the road, Conan O'Brian, and President Obama.
I can't tell you how many times candy companies have said that they want to limit the size of bars to keep people healthy, some people think this might be a cover story to hide the fact that cocoa prices are going way up.

Her Royal Highness's Choice of Soda
at
2:00 PM
Did you know that many royal families officially endorse products. There's great debate on this subject, because many people assume that the royal family involved actually produces most products they endorse and profit from it. So that's basically these families using the status that the state gives them as a promotional tool to make them money. I frankly don't really care that much about that. What I always wonder is how these particular royals actually feel about the product. Does the Queen of Finland actually eat the chocolates she endorses, does the princess in Sweden actually eat the cakes named for her? Most importantly, does the Queen of England actually drink this soda pop?
While shopping at our local grocery store the other day (in Greece strangely enough), Allison and I came across Britvic soda. According to the can this drink is made "by appointment to H M Queen Elizabeth II". So if I ever pay a visit to Buckingham Palace (like that's ever going to happen), is this the soda I get to drink?
It's a good thing I sampled a few of these because the flavour is fairly surprising. The Bitter Lemon, is actually fairly bitter. I enjoyed this a lot, even though it only offered a small 150 ml taste. It's nice to occasionally drink something that isn't super sweet and sticky. The Ginger Ale on the other hand is, as it says, spicy, not hot but spicy. I'm not a big fan of spicy drinks, so I didn't really care for it as much as the lemon. I'm not sure if Ginger Ale was originally spicy when it was invented, so I'm not sure if this is more authentic or not. If any member of the British royal family is reading this, please let me know if you actually drink this stuff.
