Over the last few years I've been living away from my home country, Canada. I've been traveling the world exploring all kinds of snack foods, junk foods, and sweets, but my heart is still in Canada. I'm going to be back home for an extended period, and I've decided to compile various lists on the theme of Canadian candy and snacks. Each week, for the next several weeks, I'll be posting a different list of Canadian candies I've reviewed in various categories. Some of these treats may be available in other parts of the world, some are exclusive to the Great White North, but in my mind all of them are Canadian.
Canada is very well known for its beer, or at least it should be. For any country that's know for its beer there's an industry for the perfect salty snacks, and Canada has some great ones. Some of them might seem a little strange to an outsider, but to Canadians these salty treats are a staple of our snacking diets.
I'm sure you're probably looking at these Cheezies and wondering how they're any different than the standard cheese puffs you see all over the world. It's simple, there's a density to these that are truly unique, and a cheesy flavour that's second to none.
Click here to read the Cheezies review.
These might not be the best chips I've ever eaten, but they're a great example of how even the big name brands understand how important the local flavour can be in Canada. Rather than just making fun chips flavours, they make chip flavours that represent Canada.

If you've never tasted dill pickle chips in your life you're truly missing out. You're either missing out on one of the best flavour experiences you'll ever taste, or you're missing out on one of the strangest flavour experiences of your life. Either way, you'll have an experience.

I love tacky souvenirs, and this one might be the best. Why wouldn't you want to eat a chips out of a bag that looks like it should be filled with potatoes? Best of all this bag is filled with locally made Prince Edward Island potatoes, some of the best in the world.

I'm sure that Canadians didn't invent the idea of using vegetables other than potatoes as chips, but with our awesome climate for growing root vegetables, we have some of the tastiest. We have room to grow things, and we grow lots of great vegies to fry up and eat.

Wednesday's Japanese Candy Review
at
12:00 PM
Sweet potato is one of those flavours that I think one day could become mainstream in the Western candy world. After all, North Americans have been making sweet potato dishes with marshmallows and brown sugar for years now. The sweet potato (as the name says) is a welcome addition to the sweets family. I just think we have to open these doors a little wider, and see what kind of sweet treats they're making in Asia. I also think this tuber would offer us some great versions of classic treats. How about sweet potato Pez, or sweet potato Jolly Ranchers, I even think that a sweet potato gummy bear would be fantastic. So open your heart, and sweet tooth, to this awesome little vegetable.

8 Days Of UK Treats - Day 7
at
10:00 AM
During one of my podcasts, we got into a discussion as to whether or not rhubarb was a fruit or a vegetable. According to Canadian law, we discovered that it is in fact designated as a fruit. I'm assuming that it's because of the applications this fruit/vegetable is used for, mostly desserts. I also imagine that scientists might argue against rhubarb being a fruit since you're pretty much just eating the stalks of leaves. I can see both arguments in this issue, I can also tell you that rhubarb is a much too often overlooked flavour for candy. There are thousands of candy companies that produce fruit flavoured treats, but very few that include rhubarb in these categories.

Does anybody know what kind of gourd this is? Is it tasty? Is it worth risking my life to climb a tree and pick it? Do you know how I can prepare it?

Spreads - Farmers Salad
at
5:00 PM
I just finished an art piece for bewarethecheese.com's fine art gallery "Senses". For this piece I had to photograph, and eventually eat more than 40 different spreads. I've decided to post a little something about each spread that I sampled.
This is another dip that's really only found in Europe. Each country seems to have a slightly different name, and a few differences in ingredients, but the idea is basically the same. It's a lot of vegetables with a mayonnaise like dressing.CC

I eat a lot, I eat all kinds of different foods from all over the world. One of my favorite things to do is to stuff my face with tasty foods. As a tribute to all of the tasty foods I stuff in my mouth, I present a new, and possibly continuing segment of this blog called "Chris Stuffing Hist Face".
I'm not really that big a fan of spinach on its own, but I love it mixed with other things.

I'm pretty sure they mean the chocolates and not the mushrooms. Not that the mushroom truffles are bad, I'm just saying is all. Some day I'd like to sample a truffle flavoured truffle, it must be the best food ever made.

Today Is National Truffle Day
at
9:19 AM
So go find yourself a pig, dig up some mushrooms an.... wait a minute, I think they mean the chocolate kind. So what's the deal with truffles as chocolates and truffles as mushrooms?

Food Diary Idea
at
3:22 PM
I just read an interesting article about keeping a food diary and it inspired me. Maybe I should keep a food diary and post it on this blog. One of the questions people ask me all the time is how I manage to run a candy website and not get fat. I claim that I don't really eat more junk food than the average person, instead I eat a variety of junk food when I do. I also try and eat fairly healthy otherwise. I also walk a heck of a lot, I never drive and I've been known to go on walking adventures that last for 5 or 6 hours. So I'll give it some thought and maybe start to publish what I'm eating today.
