The Only Candy With A Hole In The Middle

There was a time when Life Savers claimed to be "the only one candy with a hole in the middle". I wonder if Life Savers were the first candy to put a hole in the middle. I know that there must have been some cereals around with holes, but I'm not sure if I can name an older candy than Life Savers with a hole in the middle. The more I think about it though, I still don't really know why you'd want a candy with a hole in the middle, since it would mean less candy. Now that I'm thinking about this so much, I'm starting to question the design of donuts too.

Holey Cow! Check out my latest hole filled review.

Twit, twit?..

I can't tell you how many times this song got stuck in my head when I was a kid... and now that I watched this video again, it's back. I also found out that a friend of mine took dancing lessons from one of the people in this commercial. That blew my mind.

I Thought A Lot About Today's Review - Life Savers "Black Currant Pastilles"

The reason I gave today's new candy review so much thought is that I will likely not be posting another review this week. For those that don't follow Candy Critic on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, you may not know that I post a second review every week on Thursdays. I do this as a bonus for those following on our social media, and to help keep my review backlog under control. This week however I will not be posting a review, and I can't really tell you why at this given moment.

When this week is over, I'm guessing you'll have a pretty good idea why I can't talk about it, but for now I've decided to leave the reason a little quiet. Needless to say that since I'm not posting a review later this week, I wanted to make sure that today's new candy review is a good one. I wanted to be sure that it was not only a good candy, but that it was a little interesting as well.

I think I achieved that.

Click here to check out this interesting candy review.

Make sure to follow Candy Critic on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to not only be informed about future secret review postings, but you also might find out what's going on this week.

You can  also follow Candy Critic on Patreon and you'll be able to download our new Micro Comic called Snack Facts.

Candy In The Media - I Remember Life Savers

There was a time when Life Savers were the kings of the candy world, so many flavours to choose from, and even cool lollipops. I miss those days.

Old Candy Critic Articles - The 12 Candies of Christmas Part 5

I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog.  This article I've decided to re-post a little differently.  Since it's a special post for Christmas, the 12 days of Christmas in particular, I've decided to split it up into 12 parts and count down the days till the fat guy's going to bring me some sweet gifts.

'Tis the season to eat candy fa la la la la la la laaaaaa. As we all know Santa's Sack includes candy, and you know it's always what I want for Christmas. The question, with all of the Christmas candy out on the market, is which candy really says Christmas. Well in classic Candy Critic style we're going to tell you, and you better believe we're going to make it as cheesy as possible. Sooooooo.....

On the fifth day of Christmas (whenever that is) my true love gave to me......

One Life Savers "Sweet Story Book"

Life Savers are one of those treats that, alone really aren't that Christmas-like, but packaged properly it's all about the holidays. The one thing I truly remember about getting these as a kid, is the fact that it seems to last forever. I mean how many Life Savers can one man eat in a day. I did notice that they cut down on the number of Life Savers you get in each Sweet Story Book, I think that's a good thing. I think the only way you could make this a little more Christmas-like would be to create special flavours for the holidays like candy cane and egg nog.

Classic/Creative Candy Advertising - What Are These Kids Up To?

I'm not sure why, but this Lifesavers advertisement seems naughty to me.  I think it might be an innocent naughty, but naughty none the less.

As always I found this ad on Vintage Ad Browser.

90's Candy Video Week Part 2 - Negative Space Life Savers

I have a certain fascination with eating holes.  I love donut holes, or as they call them in Canada "Tim Bits", and I love the idea of eating Life Savers holes.  Now I know they're not really made from the center part of Life Savers candy, but my imagination still tries to make me believe they are.

Monday's Candy Links

Did you know that the OREO cookie and Life Savers are both 100 years old this year?

Here are "12 Fascinating Food Facts", included is an interesting experiment one can do with Altoids and hot peppers.

Would you eat a Mike, or how about an Ike?  It appears you may soon have that option.

A Question About Today's New Review

Why are candies, and sweets, in the shape of a tire so appealing?  I think candies and sweets that have this "donut" shape are the best example of candy "Ma".  Ma, is a form of Japanese art that understands the importance of the negative space as much as the positive space. In this case the negative space is the hole in the middle, and for some reason it makes some treats really great.  I don't know why this works, but I do know it does.

What 5 Cents Could Buy You In The 1950s

While it seems reasonable that 5 cents could get you a pack of life savers, I'm a little disturbed about the price of some of these other items featured in this ad.

A Jar Of Life Savers

Some people might look at this jar of Life Savers and think of it as pretty appetizing.  Me, I look at this jar and see hours of frustration.  I picture this jar of Life Savers sticking together, and me desperately trying to get them un-stuck and out of the jar.

Life Savers Story Book

I remember getting a Life Savers Sweet Story Book ever year for Christmas when I was a kid.  As far as I know they still make them, but no one in my family thinks of getting me one... *tear*

I love the use of gummies in this spot for an Australian TV station. Can you pick out the candy used?
