I'm Feeling Cake Like Today - Twiggies "Cream Dream Vanilla"

I realized something while writing this review of an obvious Twinkies rip off, I've never actually reviewed regular Twinkies. It seems like an obvious treat that someone like me should be reviewing, but here we are many years into this project and I still don't have a Twinkies review. I'm not sure when I'll have a review either, mostly because right now I'm not living in North America, and believe it or not, Twinkies are pretty hard to find in most parts of the world. Just remember that when you're making an obscure Twinkies reference on the Internet, there's a huge number of people who have no idea what you're talking about.

Click here to read the rip off review.

Make sure to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as I'm sure I'll post the minute I finally review the real Twinkies.

5 Awesome Candy Themed Funko Pops - Part 4 - Twinkie The Kid

We still have a few more characters to look at in our series about candy themed Funko Pops.

Do people know who Twinkie the Kid is? Even when I was a kid Twinkie the Kid wasn't a huge deal for us. That could have been because I lived in Canada, or it could be my age. Later in life I found out more about this awesome cowboy and I gained a hearty respect for him. He was an amazing mascot for one of the most popular baked treats in the world. I wonder if they'll ever bring him back?

Today's New Candy Review Brought Up An Interesting Question - Twinkies "Chocolate Cake"

While posting this week's new candy review, a question popped into my head, how do you spell the singular for Twinkies? Do you simply remove the "s", or do you substitute the "ies" with a "y"? The other question is should you  spell Twinkies in the singular in the first place. After all they always come in packages of 2 or more. Maybe this is one of those words that should stay in pluralized form, even if there's only one.

Click here to find out what we thought about these Twinkies, and we promise not to bring up this stupid question ever again.

If you have an answer, you can contact us on Facebook or Twitter.

This Week In Candy

Now that I'm wrapping up my adventure here in Greece, I'm finding myself desperately trying to taste every Greek sweet that I can lay my hands on.  In doing so I'm discovering some new treats, re-tasting some of my favorites, and even discovering some new versions of old favorites.  The photo above features an old favorite, Trigona, but this particular one was purchased in a bakery that's been making them since the start (or so they claim).  While I can't tell you for sure that their story is true, I can tell you that they make them better than any place I've ever tried before.

Speaking of my departure, this week was the last week for our Greek candy review fest.  For the last few months we've been posting exclusively Greek sweets every Monday for our new review.  This week we finished off with a classic Greek chocolate bar that's pretty common here, but for some reason no one else in the world has ever heard of it.  You can check out the review here.

Finally, this week week we're talking Twinkies on Snack Facts.  If you check out our Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook feeds this week, every day you'll learn something new about the best (or worst) cake treat ever made.

Candy News

This is your brain... This is your brain on chocolate... See it works so much better.

So what is a candy cane, where did they come from?  Here's all the information you're going to need.

This years trendy DIY sweet treat for the holidays?  Gingerbread.  Not that it wasn't popular before, but these year it seems to be exploding.  Here's some proof, here even more, and even more.

It turns out that the new folks at Hostess are looking to expand into the global market, that means that all you folks in Europe, Asia, and Australia won't have to pay premium prices for Twinkies anymore.

Nutella Bar opens in Chicago, on an unrelated note, anybody out there have a spare room in Chicago that I could move into?

I'm not sure how I feel about the trend to mix alcoholic drinks and sweet treats together, no matter how silly or strange the combination might be.  Sometimes it works naturally, other times...

Candy News

Jimmy Kimmel has a horrible (and funny?) tradition of asking parents to video tape their kids reaction when they tell them that they've eaten all of their Halloween candy.

The National Confectioners Association has published some great tips on how to make your Halloween candy last.

I look forward to the day when I can tell you that the chocolate price crisis is over, but I really think it's just getting started.

Wouldn't you know it, just when chocolate prices start really going up, more scientific proof that chocolate's actually good for you.

You could argue all day about where in Europe the best chocolate is made, however the most chocolate consumed in Western Europe is in Germany.

As you can imagine, this article about a man eating a world record 121 Twinkies in 6 minutes, also features an attractive photo.

Candy News

What would you pay to have a one on one conversation with Warren Buffett?  What if I threw in a tour of a candy factory?

Next Thanks Giving, look for a giant floating chocolatier in the Macy's Day parade.

Guess which country eats the most chocolate?  I'll give you a hint, they make some of the best.

Planning a trip to China anytime soon?  You might want to check out "Shanghai Chocolate Happy Land".

Wrigley's is looking to break into the vitamin gummy field, maybe they should focus on making their gum's flavour last for more than 10 seconds instead.

Have you ever tasted a Cherry Ripe in Australia, I don't really get why they're so popular, but they are.

So you think that S'mores are simple, well they don't have to be.

The new owners of Hostess are really bragging about how awesome Twinkies are, they're even comparing them to Elvis.

The dangers of hard candy... Remember, it's for the children.

Apparently if you eat food accompanied with a particular ritual it actually improves the taste, that's why I always do a little dance before I eat a chocolate bar.

Here's a shocking story about a kid that got kicked out of camp for eating chocolate, I never went to camp for these very reasons.

If you like sitting down with a tub of ice cream and your favorite book, here's some perfect combinations to make your day.

Thursday's Candy Links

Hostess is filing for bankruptcy... again in only a few years.  Have people stopped eating Twinkies?

Is M&Ms changing the colour combination for their plain a peanut M&Ms?  It looks like something is up.

Joan Collins is the new face of Snickers, I guess Mr T didn't cut it.

Twinkie Flavours

Apparently there was a poll done recently on the Twinkie's website.  The poll asked people to vote on a new flavour of Twinkie that they'd like to try.  The winner, Lemon Meringue, so in 2012 look out for it.

1970's Snack Cakes Are Back!

Not only is Hostess bringing back some of their cool characters from the 70s, for a limited time.  But for this limited time they're going to go back to the original recipe for the Twinkie.  As you may or may not know, originally Twinkie's where filled with a banana cream.  So if you see a retro style Twinkie, pick it up and give it a try.  Unless it looks like it just might be a really old Twinkie, then I might suggesting staying away.

New Twinkie Flavours

There's going to be two new (temporary) Twinkie flavours on the way one with strawberry cream, and another with chocolate cream.  You can vote on your favorite and that flavour will stick.  Now I don't want to push any opinions, but if you don't vote for a chocolate Twinkie I will have no respect for you at all.

Hoboken Has A Sweet History

Who knew that Hoboken was really such an important part of candy history.  According to the article below Tootsie Rolls and Twinkies owe much of their history to this city.  And that's only the beginning, it appears that Hoboken is really a candy friendly town all around.  Best of all if you want to learn more about it, there's an interesting looking exhibit going on at the Hoboken Historical Museum for the next 6 months.

Twinkie Diet Works

A man in the US has successfully lost 27pounds on something known as the Twinkie diet.  The Twinkie diet consists of eating nothing but sugary foods, like Twinkies, every three hours instead of meals.  The importance of this one man is that he is Dr Haub, and he's a studies nutrition.  Now as much as I'd like to endorse this diet for everyone, in particular myself, I do realize that it's unrealistic to keep it up and keep the weight off.

The Food Channel Announces Some Trends in Snacking

Chips are going gourmet, snack cakes from the past are more and more popular. These are just some of the trends coming from a new poll looking at some of the most popular treats in the US. The one that impressed me most (and makes me say I told you so) is that apparently smaller portion sizes are becoming more and more trendy. This is great news, as I've always said, it's better to go with quality over quantity, you'll always be more satisfied.

Unhealthy Temptations

I just came across this list of "Five Unhealthy Temptations We Can't Seem To Resist" and for the most part I have to agree. When I look at a list like this I wonder why some of these treats are on the list because really they're not that tasty. But low and behold if you put one in front of me I'll devour it immediately.
