It's great to see schools selling chocolate bars to raise money, it's totally awesome to know that the food science department is behind it.
I don't always think about what candies are vegan, and what candies are not. For example, did you know fudge isn't vegan?
What do you get when you mix vodka with your favorite breakfast cereal, surprisingly the answer can't be found in a fraternity movie.

Monday's Candy Links
at
9:00 AM
Janet Jackson was at the opening of Dylan's Candy Bar in LA, that's pretty cool, I wonder what she bought?
If you're against schools boards banning sugar from their schools, don't worry, it's not the first thing they've banned, and not the dumbest thing either (Jamie Oliver probably is the dumbest).
Oregon Live is having another Candy Bowl competition to vote in their favorite sweet treat for Halloween, last year Reese's Peanut Butter Cups won, who will win this year?

Wednesday's Candy Links
at
9:00 AM
Did you know that the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has a candy school? I now know where I want a masters degree, or a PHD.
Mars is getting a street named after them in Hackettstown, and you could choose what the name might be.
Have you ever wondered what the difference between gelato and ice cream might be? Well wonder no more.

Why Make It Look And Smell Like Chocolate?
at
3:08 PM
I saw this novelty calculator that looks and apparently smells like chocolate at a book store the other day and it really begs the question. Why would someone want to be regularly reminded of the look and smell of chocolate, without actually having any chocolate to eat? Worse still, why would you want to associate the wonderful treat that is chocolate with the crappy chore that is mathematics? This whole novelty item just seems wrong to me.

Wednesday's Candy Links
at
10:02 AM
Serious Eats looks at mini cereal boxes. One day I'm going to replicate the sugary selection of the mini cereal pack in full size boxes, that'll show my parents.
More news about honey, apparently Florida is going to de-regulate small scale honey producers.
Do you like candy? Are you a fan of Boise State? Well I have news for you.

Gum Chewing Makes You Smarter
at
10:47 AM
Have I posted this article before? In the most ironic post ever on this site, I found an article about a study that says chewing gum helps teens in school, but I'm pretty sure I've written about this in a past post. Unfortunately I can't remember for sure if I have posted about this, maybe I should start chewing gum while I post links.

Choosing a School for Next Year
at
11:23 AM
I don't want to influence your decision but you might want to read this list of College Town Ice Cream Parlors. Sure a good school is important, high standard of education, good library, and great facilities. But really you know as well as I do that a good ice cream parlor is a must.

School in Wisconsin
at
4:56 PM
It appears that several candy lobby groups have decided to team up and create the first ever official school of candy. It appears that the goal is to create a fully accredited university program that focuses on candy and sweets. Now I just finished my BA a little while ago, and I'm thinking that maybe a Masters Degree in candy is just what I need.

Get a Chocolate Education
at
3:16 PM
I just read an interesting article about a couple of people that decided to open the first ever Chocolate University. It's a pretty clever idea and the folks that created the coarse seem to have the right credentials to teach on the subject. I'm slightly tempted to give it a try myself.

Vending Machine Security
at
3:56 PM
I just read an interesting article about theft from vending machines and some of the new technologies being designed to deal with it. When I first read the headline "Vending Machines Try Electronic Self-Defense", I had visions of vending machines that would actually fight back. Unfortunately we're not at that stage yet, but who knows what the future has in store.

Hershey's Believes in Education
at
4:03 PM
I too believe in education, I even would go so far as to say that I (verbally) support any kind of education that involves making better candy for the whole world. I put the word "verbally" in brackets because I'm not sure if I have the kind of money to start a scholarship yet.

Educational Institutes Have The Best Warm Drinks
at
5:50 PM
In University and in College I learned very quickly the value of a coffee, tea or hot chocolate. Today I'm less about the coffee, a little about the tea, but I still love a hot chocolate. Claire Sibley of Middlebury College did her fellow classmates a huge favour by helping them find the best cup of hot chocolate on campus. Some of these options sound so good, I'm thinking of enrolling.

Spies Can Use Gummy Bears
at
6:10 PM
Apparently if you want to get through a finger scanner the best tool is a gummy bear. Or so some kids in Australia learnt when they beat their schools role call finger scanners with them. On another note, what in the world are schools using finger scanners for role call for? When I was a kid the teacher said our names, we answered and that was that.

Chocolate Lessons
at
1:33 PM
In the back of my head I always think about learning how to make candy. I think it would be such a benefit to this site and my knowledge of food writing if I could actually make the stuff myself. Then I remember a few Christmas' ago when Allison decided to show me how to make chocolates and it was pretty much a hellish experience. So then I remember how much I just like eating treats.

A Chocolate Education
at
2:46 PM
Why in the world did my school not offer chocolate 101 when I was in high school. Instead I got stuck in gym class trying to climb a rope that really only one guy could do it and he was so modest even though he knew he was much cooler than the rest of us. See if I had a chocolate class instead I wouldn't be holding in such resentment for a guy I can't even remember his name.

Banning Candy From Schools Does One Thing...
at
11:30 AM
It does a great job and terrifying and confusing little children to believe that choosing what they want to eat may lead to punishment. I personally enjoyed the parents reaction to her 3rd grade daughters detention because she had a candy in her possession, "candy sniffing dogs next?"

Banning Cookies
at
9:40 AM
I've been following many stories about banning sweet treats in schools and frankly I'm really divided about the idea. I can see some kids brining loads of sweet treats into schools and not eating healthy. I also know that treats in moderation are OK and banning sweet treats isn't really a fair way of dealing with the problem.
