Tom's Look At The Visual Side Of Snacks And Candy - African Gold Sesame Seed

Hi folks! Glad you could drop in for another look at snack and candy packaging! This week, I wanted to share a quick snapshot of a shipping sack for African Gold Sesame Seeds. I love how the shape of the continent is filled with graphic silhouettes that represent flora and fauna of Africa! What struck me was the fact that very few people will see this piece of package art. It is on a large 50lb sack from which bins at Bulk Barn (for example) sell the product to customers. Except for the moments when staff refill the container, the bag is stored away out of sight of the public. Hopefully, the audience of Candy Critic will enjoy this glimpse of a rarely seen piece of Snack Pack Art!

More Than Salt On a Pretzel

For years now I've considered myself to be a pretzel aficionado.  Of all of the salty snacks, I think pretzels might be my favorite.  I love pretzels straight, curled, soft, crunchy, just about any shape or texture you could imagine.  Recently I've discovered a whole new area of pretzel goodness that I'm surprised I've never tasted before, sesame seeded pretzels.  A few sesame seeds sprinkled with the salt creates a whole new dynamic that's really yummy.  This got me thinking, what else would be good sprinkled on a pretzel?

Seedy Asian Review is Part 3 of Our Asian Review-A-Thon

I get a lot of grief from people who tell me that treats, like today's review, are in fact not candy.  Seed and nut treats are a bit of a grey area, but when I see one that I'm sure is a candy, I review it.  You may have a difference of opinion, but then it begs the question, what percentage must your treat be made up of nuts or seeds for it not to be candy?

Sesame Seeds In Your Chocolate

The other day, Allison brought me home a couple of pieces of chocolate.  The first, was a nice dark chocolate with whole hazelnuts inside.  If you have to describe your typical chocolate pairing in Europe, hazelnuts and dark chocolate would be it.  They love the flavour combination, and frankly Europeans love hazelnuts.  I've seen hazelnuts for sale in more stores and in more ways than any other place I've ever been.  This is one trend I'd like to see more of in North America.

The second piece of chocolate that she brought home was a little bit stranger, in fact I can't say I've ever seen anything like it before.  It was a smooth milk chocolate generously sprinkled with sesame seeds.  Although this is a flavour I've never tried, I would certainly like to try it again.

The sesame seeds added a very delicate flavour that added to the milk chocolate very nicely.  You couldn't really taste sesame, but instead you just tasted a changed chocolate flavour.  The texture was also nice because of the softness of the seeds.  This is something I hope chocolatiers try experimenting with even more in the future.

The Last of the Greek Reviews

At least for a little while this is the last of the Greek reviews.  I only say this because I have a pretty solid line up of non Greek candy on the way that I'm dying to try out.  But seeing as I'm living here, in Greece, for the next little while, I imagine you'll see more Greek reviews in the future.  Maybe even another "Greek Review-a-Thon.
