Ugly Candy Tattoo

I love candy, I love candy a whole lot. I love the culture, I love the taste, I thought I loved candy more than anybody else. I was wrong. Behold the strangest way to celebrate candy.

New Donut Competition

Dunkin' Donuts is having their second annual donut creating contest and the folks from Boston have pretty good odds in my book. This article from the Herald is probably enough to swing my vote.

I think I may have posted something in the past about the Gummy Bear Chandelier, but the Gummy Bear bear skin rug is a new one for me.

Getting Read For Bikini Season

I just realized that no mater how you read that title it really sounds wrong. I either sound like some kind of pervert, or I plant images of myself in a bikini into your head. I mean to do neither, instead I wanted to point out this great article that talks about the kind of snacks one can eat in order to get into shape. Number 2 is particularly right on.

CC

Make Your Own Poptarts

I'm always skeptical of recipes that claim you can make your own version of a particular treat. It's very rarely the same and very often takes a lot more work than making other treats. These however look pretty good, and Chocolate spread in a Poptart would be pretty good.

Strange Treats You Should Try

Parade Magazine has a great collection of treats you should try but where probably to afraid to sample. I've tried all but the Kool-Aid pickles, and I have to agree that most of them are pretty good. My favorite is the sponge toffee, and frankly I'd be surprised if most of you haven't tried it already.

Super Healthy Chocolate

The stars are a-buzz over a new chocolate treat that is apparently healthy for you, even more than just chocolate alone. Best of all, apparently it tastes great too. I'm not convinced, I need a sample.

Is My Mother Contacting Candy Companies?

I say this because this year more than any other I've been getting e-mails about mothers day candy deals.
The folks at Sucre sent me a link to this nice little box of chocolate, a perfect gift for mom.
M&Ms are also celebrating with personalized M&Ms with greeting and pictures of mom.

Make Your Own Hershey Bar

A while back I posted a link about an exhibit in the works at Hershey World in Pennsylvania where guests could design and make their own Hershey bar. Well apparently the doors will open in June and custom candy bars will go flying out.

Apparently For Mothers Day, Mothers Want To Eat

Sweet treats seem to be the new trend for Mothers Day. I’ve read, and received complaints from people saying that candy is getting way too popular and overused as gifts for every holiday. Well I’d agree, but my mother would also kill me if I didn’t get her a bag of licorice allsorts for her this year.

Smoothy Obsessed Man Writes A Book

Food Health Problems

My biggest complaint with the "health world" is that they can never agree. One minute it's fats that are bad, next it's carbs, then there's alway sugar (I know sugar are carbs as well) the most favorite of health enemies. Really people, just eat a nice variety of foods, eat good foods, try new things, don't just sit down with a box of donuts and a pizza but try other things. I'm not doctor but a variety seems like a good idea to me.

CC

"Study nothing new, too much sugar is bad for you"

I love the title of this article that pretty much sums up the idea that if you eat too much sugar, bad things will happen to you. It's very true, so choose your sugar wisely.

Do You Need a Reason to Eat Chocolate?

Well here's 10 of them:

This Depression Thing Gets Around

Ever since the news dropped that some scientists found that chocolate may lead to depression every single news organization has jumped on the “we hate chocolate” bandwagon. As I’ve mentioned in the past, the National Confectioners Association has argued that the science is in conclusive. My opinion is simple, if you feel sad talk to someone. I always think it’s better to enjoy a treat to add to an already good mood anyways. If you think a little treat will cheer you up, make sure it’s little, and make sure it’s the good stuff, after all you deserve it.

CC

Israeli Candy Available in Walmart

I'm not sure what the angle is from Walmart. Are they trying to be more global to bring in new flavours from all over the world, or are they importing inexpensive treats from other countries in an attempt to cut costs. Either way if I find them on the shelf I'll give one a try, but I'm skeptical.

CC

Cocoa On The Rise

I never know if I should report this kind of thing, are people interested in the fact that cocoa prices are shooting through the roof. At this point it'll mean very little to you, however it will probably lead to either more expensive chocolate treats, or lower standards for chocolate treats. That's right, some companies will actually lower the amount of cocoa in a treat rather than lower the price.

CC

Don't Eat It!!!

If you get a lollipop from a "Mr. Bunny", don't eat it! Actually the brand is called 'Mr. Bunny' and apparently these glowing lollipops may cause cancer. Who would imagine that eating something that glows in the dark might cause you harm.

CC

New M&M Donut At Tim Horton's

Tim Horton's latest special donut really peaked my interest. This time instead of just being a new flavour, it's also been branded.
This long donut is covered with chocolate icing, then covered with M&Ms. It's the first time I've ever seen Tim Horton's take on a particular candy with a donut. They call this one the candy bar donut and I image there may be more like it in the future, but maybe covered with different candy treats. My only disappointment with this donut is that since Tim Horton's is a Canadian company, you'd think they would have used Smarties instead of M&Ms.

CC

Blizzard in The Spring Causes Traffic Problems in PEI

See, I'm being really clever here because I used the word "Blizzard" in the title. I didn't say that it was a Dairy Queen Blizzard, and that the traffic jam was caused because of a Blizzard sale. For the anniversary of the DQ Blizzard they had a buy one get second for 25 cents deal and it caused havoc in PEI the other day. Man that's one clever title, not going to be another like that anytime soon.

NCA Bites Back About Chocolate and Depression

Instantly the National Confectioners Association has commented about the accusations made by several news agencies about the idea that chocolate can lead to depression. I posted about this this morning, and now I'm posting about it again this afternoon, I'm stating to feel depressed about this new found argument.

CC

Visit Dylan's, Visit the World

Now I get to travel a whole lot, and I get to eat a whole lot of candy from all over the world. I realize that I'm really lucky, however if you live in New York City you too could be lucky. Dylan's Candy Bar is having a special event where they're showcasing candy from all over the world. I implore you to head down there if you can and try something that scares you.

CC

Chocolate and Depression

I can see where this article sees chocolate and depression working together. Simply put, you feel depressed, you go for some chocolate, you feel depressed about the calories in the chocolate. The trick is to think about the chocolate you eat, get something that is satisfying and make it an event, even if you're depressed. If you can't get yourself in that kind of mental state I'm fairly sure that the chocolate is not the problem, and maybe you should get some help.

CC

Junk Food Advertising Criticized Globally

Here's an interesting article from Pakistan about the new "problem" facing children today. Similar to many arguments in the US, England, and here in Canada, junk food advertising is under some pressure to lighten up. People see the problem of too much advertising geared towards kids in order to get them to buy junk food. As long as this "junk food" includes unhealthy meals and fast food I'm OK with it. I just don't like when the target candy and candy alone. Although the reference with junk food and tobacco seems a little harsh.

CC

My Opinion On Organic

As a rule I don't really find myself searching out for organic treats. I've had, and reviewed a few in my lifetime and generally I seem to remember them being fairly tasty. I'm not sure if they where tastier than an un-organic version most often because many organic treats seem to focus on natural flavours. So I guess I'm down with organics mostly because the companies producing them are working hard to make great treats.

An Example of a Bad S'mores Idea

I'm still looking for people to suggest tips for making s'mores. The two best tips will win a free s'mores gift pack from Hershey. In an attempt to be clever with my gift pack I came up with a good example of a tip.
It's pretty simple, raw s'mores are kind of gross. Being too lazy to roast the marshmallow is not a good substitute.

CC

Banning Cookies

I've been following many stories about banning sweet treats in schools and frankly I'm really divided about the idea. I can see some kids brining loads of sweet treats into schools and not eating healthy. I also know that treats in moderation are OK and banning sweet treats isn't really a fair way of dealing with the problem.

You Could Get Some Hershey Stuff

I just got a cool box of S'mores making stuff from Hershey. It came with the fixings needed to make s'mores, a Rascal Flatts CD and a cool bag.
The bag was the biggest surprise of all. It had a cool S'mores logo on it and inside...
It came chock full of s'mores sticks. Some might say that these sticks could also be used for cooking other things like hotdogs, but I disagree. In my house these are for s'mores and s'mores only. Remember, if you want to win a package just like this yourself I'm running a contest right now and two lucky readers will get the same box shipped to their front door. Click here for more details on how you can enter the contest.

Happy National Pretzel Day!

Sure you could just go out an get a bag of plain old pretzels, but why would you. Covering pretzels is so much fun, and there are so many choices of things to cover it with. Strawberry Review Forever

Here's a cool fact about these treats. Apparently they're named after the Apollo 11 lunar capsule that landed on the moon. They kind of look like them although I think it's kind of strange for a Japanese treat to celebrate the first Americans on the moon. Having said that there are many Japanese treats that don't make sense to me, that's really most of the fun.

On the Heels Of The News About General Mills Cutting Down Sodium

Yesterday I posted a piece about General Mills cutting the sodium in many of their products. Well here's an update as to why they may have chosen to do that. It appears that the FDA is going to be calling for all processed food companies to cut down the sodium in their foods. General Mills jumped on the boat without a minute to spare... or they knew it was coming.

You May Not Know Who John Molyneux Is

But he was an important man in the North American candy world. Mr Molyneux is the man responsible for brining Altoids mints and Terries Chocolate Oranges into the North American market. Free S'mores For You!

The folks at Hershey want two of my Candy Critic friends from the US to get a whole bunch of S'mores making stuff. First of all you have to live in the continental United States (sorry other countries) secondly you have to give me the greatest S'mores making tips ever. I need this tip because apparently they're sending me a kit as well.

I'll pick the best (more creative) tips and the top 2 will get a S'mores Kit from Hershey's.

To enter simply get me your tip and an e-mail address. You can send the tips and and e-mail as a comment on this blog, as a comment on this Facebook group, you can use the comment form here, or you can just e-mail chris (at) candycritic.org. Cruelty To Children

I don't care what you might learn from this, even a cure for cancer isn't worth this kind of torture.

Updated Candy Critic Site

I'm not sure if I mentioned this but I've decided to re-vamp www.candycritic.org. It was a fine design a few years ago and it worked for a while, but right now I'm really not happy with it. Above is a sketch of the new design... a really rough sketch. For the next little while I'm going to poke and prod at the design, but come late August early September I'm going to shift the update into high gear. If anybody has any tips, ideas, or problems with the current site I'd like to hear about them.

People Complain About Candy

It's funny but you might think that I would totally disagree with this article, but actually I don't. I agree that too many holidays are becoming candy focused. I think that a treat any (or even every) holiday is great, but it shouldn't always be the focus. Christmas should be about the Santa stuff, Thanks giving is about eating a big meal with family, Easter... yup that's about the candy. We also as a society eat way too much candy, it should be a treat. You shouldn't skimp on your treats, but you should limit them.

It's Exam Time

About a year ago I read a couple of articles all about the benefit of eating candy (or chewing gum) while under stressful situations. In particular while doing feats that required stressful brain usage. I personally get brain stress from opening a can of olives, so exam time here at school is particularly rough. I decided after reading these article to give it a try and start eating hard candies while I studied and while I did exams. My marks are pretty much the same (not bad), however my focus and stress level seem to be pretty low while working my grey matter. Since the nice folks at Halls had sent me a whole bunch to suck on, it turned into my study treat of choice. So thanks folk at Halls for the cool breezy, brain active treats.

I didn't mention this when I poster earlier about the Poutine competition in Toronto but frankly I was wondering why it didn't take place in Quebec since that's the province that both invented it and has the best stuff. CC

More Fuel To The Candy Tax Fire

I just read this article about all of the Candy and Soda Taxes that are coming out all over the US and once again it ticks me off. I understand that obesity is a problem, I understand that healthcare is expensive, but picking on a particular type of food is really unfair. I've given my argument on this issue a million times, candy is not the only treat that is unhealthy, the definitions of candy for these taxes are unfair, and candy is one of the more honest foods about how it ranks in health, are just a few. I'm keeping my eye on this, and frankly glad that I live in Canada.

Kids + Sugar = Violent Adults?

You might think that the headline of this article "Study Links Kids and Candy To Violent Behavior" means that the article might have some pretty hard proof that violence is caused by kids eating candy. However the article is more about how it might be somewhat related although there is not real hard proof. So basically this reporter has written a pretty good headline without any real strong proof.

CC

Poutine Competition

I know this isn't candy related (that makes two posts today) but I just wanted to show a little Canadian pride and promote what could be the most Canadian food in the world. Chocolate and Treats Are Good For Some Athletes

I have to make sure that people understand how this works because I always get the same argument. I am aware that the reason high carb and high sugar treats are good for athletes because they tend to burn off calories faster than most people. It gives them the jolt of energy that they will burn off in order to participate in their athletic endeavorer. A treat to boost the average person is OK too, but only in moderation and only when you plan to be active. So the lesson is simple, eat treats, eat other thing, and be active. That way we all win.

I Thought It Was a Good Time To Get Into The Candy Business

I thought with the economic situation people where buying more sweets and the candy business was doing fairly well. It appears, according to this article, that I'm totally wrong and the candy business is really a risky place to be right now. Maybe I should change this site up and start reviewing something a little safer.

Skor, Cheese Cake, Beaver Tail

It got a little chilly this weekend here in Ottawa, so I figured what better way to warm up on a cool walk than a Beaver Tail. For those that are new, Beaver Tails are pretty similar to Elephant Ears only more Canadian. They're so yummy that many famous people have been to this very shack to buy one, including recently Barack Obama. The traditional flavour one orders when getting a Beaver Tail is normally a Kilalo Sunrise (cinnamon sugar, and a little lemon juice).
That's a tasty flavour and all, but lately I've been going for the more extreme flavours they offer. This trip out I tried the cheese cake frosting with chocolate sauce and Skor bar bits. I can't remember what it's called but I ate it 3 days ago and I can still remember how it made me feel.

Finally Someone Chimes In About "Healthy Food"

This great article gives a little more detail into the problems that affect healthy foods. Foods that are low in fat can often be full of sugar, or carbs. I'm not saying that candy is perfect, but it's a little more honest.

The NCA Wants Cheaper Sugar

The NCA President made an announcement that he wanted reform to lower the price of sugar in the US. Either I'm more aware of these issues as of late or there's a real battle with the American government and candy companies.

Well this little article can answer that question for you, at the very least it can tell you how much Americans spent on treats in the last little while.

Chocolate Tasting... It's Fun For All

In the last few days I've been inundated with articles about local chocolate eating conventions/meetings/events. Basically it's a bunch of people getting together (most often for charities) to taste chocolate and have a good time... Wait a minute, how can one taste chocolate and not have a good time? Well if you have a chocolate tasting event planned and you want a famous... well known... breathing candy fanatic to show up let me know.
