Cadbury Proof - Part 2

Almost 5 years ago I posted a blog about the purchase of Cadbury by Kraft (You can read it here).  I said in this post that I would save a Dairy Milk wrapper that was purchased when Cadbury wasn't owned by Kraft, then in one year I would compare the bars and see if there were any changes made.  Life got in the way and I wasn't able to write the article in one year.  Then after having moved several times, I lost the wrapper.  However, after having moved again recently, I was going through my file drawer and I came across the Dairy Milk wrapper from almost 5 years ago.  It reminded me that I should check up on how Cadbury/Kraft was doing.  See if they've made any great advancements, as well as check to make sure they're not lowering their standards in any way.
Since I'm not living in Canada right now, the place where I bought the original bar, I had to ask around and see if anybody would be willing to help me out by purchasing and photographing a Dairy Milk bar for me in Canada.  Fortunately my friend Adam (check out his awesome photo website here) was happy to oblige.  Probably both to help, and also to have an excuse to eat some chocolate after his photo shoot.  The first picture on this post is of the current state of the Dairy Milk bar in Canada, the photo directly above is of the wrapper from almost 5 years ago.  The wrapper itself has gone through a bit of updating, but I must say not much.  The two glasses of milk are still there, and the logo is almost exactly the same.  The colour of the package may have changed a bit, but that could also be a lighting thing.  The Dairy Milk font has changed a little, and the biggest change is the addition of the giant chocolate jug.  So far this is fairly promising.

Upon comparing the ingredients, I'm happy to report that the order that they appear is still the same, and there appears to be little or no change to the ingredients.  This doesn't mean that there is definitely no change at all.  Companies are required to list what ingredients are in a bar, not how much of each ingredient is in a bar.  That means that notionally they could lower the amount of cocoa in the bar, and keep the wrapper the same.  The only reason they would have to change the package is if the change affected the ratio of ingredients.  The ingredients are listed from most found in the bar to the least.  So the amount of cocoa would have to change to the point where there was either less cocoa than soy lecithin, or more cocoa than cocoa butter for a change to be required.

I'm also happy to report that they haven't changed the size of the bar either.  I've traveled around and seen "updated" Dairy Milk bars in the shapes of bubbles, and these bars were a few grams lighter than the Canadian Dairy Milk bar.  I was worried that the folks at Kraft had decided that this "new" shape would be the norm all over the world, and that they would shrink the size of the Dairy Milk bar.  But as the bar Adam purchased shows, 42 grams, is exactly the same weight as the one I purchased several years back. It would appear that Kraft is doing well and leaving this classic bar alone.
While I am very happy about the fact that the Dairy Milk bar hasn't changed in Canada, I'm not completely happy with the way Kraft has dealt with Cadbury products.  I was optimistic when the purchase happened that Kraft would try and make Cadbury products more universal.  I was hoping that they might try and move some Cadbury products into new markets and share the wealth.  Caramello Koalas should be available to everyone around the world, not just Australians, and Crunchy bars should be on every store shelf around the world.  Most importantly Cadbury should be available to my neighbors to the south, the Americans.  As far as I know Cadbury is still a specialty item in the US, and that's a shame.  It's about time Americans knew what great chocolate bars taste like, and maybe add a bit of competition into what I consider one of the weakest in quality of chocolate bar markets.

Classic/Creative Candy Advertising

I've been thinking a lot about bubble gum lately.  According to some statistics bubble gum has fallen out of popularity lately compared to the rest of the candy business.  I have to be honest, my love of chewing gum has diminished lately as well.  I'm thinking that it has something to do with the creativity around the chewy treat.  There really hasn't been huge strides towards making gum more fun to eat.  Most of the advancements have been in health and biodegradability instead.  I'm not saying that these two factors aren't important, I just think that many gum companies aren't really thinking about people enjoying gum, but instead are thinking about why people should chew gum.  There's a big difference, and I'm guessing this is why gum sales might be in a slump.

I found this mildly disturbing ad here.

How's Your Breath?

What do you think of mint?  Do you think it actually tastes like mint?  Do you carry mints to work or on a date?  How much do you really know about the sales and consumption of mint products?  Myself, I think some mints are OK, unless they're so strong they make your eyes water.  I don't think most mint candies taste like real mint, but they're still OK.  I don't carry mints, but I do have some sitting at the front door of my house right now for guests.  I know a lot more about mint product sales after reading this overly detailed article on the subject.

India Likes Candy

According to some new statistics India is turning into the fastest growing candy market in the world.  I'm really happy about that and I hope the folks in India are willing to share.  I'd love to try more traditional Indian candies and maybe with the growth of their import market, their export market will do the same.  That or I'll have to plan a trip.

Cadbury Factory For Sale

Earlier I had mentioned that Kraft had (controversially) decided to shut down one of the Cadbury plants and move production to Poland.  Well the factory is now up for sale.  It's too bad and I really hope another candy maker steps in to keep it rolling and the people employed.  My only question is, how much do they want for the giant Cadbury sign?

Good Conscience or Good Business

Below is an interesting article about Fair Trade chocolate and the business behind it.  The folks that certify Fair Trade products are trying to promote the idea that putting the label on your food is not just about doing the right thing as it is good business as well.  They say it's good business because the people of the world are better educated today and they feel that "Fair Trade" certification will actually sell more candy and food than not having the certification.

Dove Parties Are Like Tupperware Parties Only Better

I just finished reading an interesting article about a woman who helps people love chocolate.  Sure she also helps people sell chocolate too, but frankly I have no problem with chocolate sales people.  It's really interesting to see how people fall into the world of chocolate, and this woman has a story to tell.

Rules For Selling Girl Guide Cookies

I just read an interesting article that talks about the etiquette of selling Girl Guide Cookies.  I have to say the first paragraph of the article

"This is the time of year when the Girl Scouts offer up Thin Mints, Do-si-dos, Lemon Chalet Cremes and Samoas – ah, Samoas, with their mad scientist blend of rich chocolate, delicate shortbread, gooey caramel and chewy coconut!"

makes me think of one more rule that should be heavily enforced.  Always make sure that if you have a box of cookies, share some with your favorite Candy Critic.

Are You A Chocolate Snob?

I know that I am, and according to many facts and figures more and more people are becoming chocolate snobs.  Sales of high quality chocolates and chocolate treats are going through the roof all over the world.  Many say it's because of the global economic crisis (people can't spend on large things so items like candy do well), while I simply believe people are finally waking up to the greatness that is candy.

A Deal Is A Deal

Apparently the folks at Just Born had a deal with their employees.  They told them that if they increased their sales this year that the whole group of them would enjoy a nice trip to Hawaii.  However if they failed to increase the sales the whole group of them would have to take "trip to the nation's arctic tundra".  Well they didn't increase their sales this year, so apparently it was off to Minneapolis for the crew.  Now I don't mind the idea of setting up a deal like this for your employees, however I do object to the idea that Minneapolis is considered the "arctic tundra" even by American national standards.  Maybe they're forgetting that Alaska is a state as well?

More Fair Trade Is Good

According to statistics fair trade chocolate sales are up in the US. I've been a big fan of fair trade chocolate for a few years now, but not for the reasons you might think. I like fair trade chocolate because often companies that take the time to worry about details, such as where their chocolate comes from, also deal with details such as how good their chocolate tastes. The problem I see happening with fair trade becoming more mainstream is this kind of measurement will not be relevant anymore and even crappy tasting chocolate treats will be fair trade. It's not that I mind everybody being fair trade, I'll just have to work a little hard spotting high quality.

Apparently Sales Might Not Be So Great In Russia

Yesterday I posted an article talking about how great the chocolate sales are in Russia this year and today I came across an article saying that the extreme warm weather has harmed the candy sales this year in Russia. I'm thinking yesterdays article might have taken their statistics from early in the year (end of winter spring) and the article below is more about the current state of the industry. That or someone is lying.

Top Snacks

I never understand these polls ranking the most popular snacks. I don't understand it because I don't think they really matter. Here's my theory, a company puts out a great snacks. People all over say that they love this snack, they might even have one million facebook fans. However the sales of the snack aren't great, so the snack is pulled off the market. Same goes if a snack isn't "popular" but sells well. I'm sure you'll never find either of these situations so really do you need to spend money on polls?

Yup Kraft Is Still Selling

It's not really a suprise, since they anounced a deal like this was in the works earlier this summer. But Kraft is once again selling off bits and pieces of Cadbury, this time in Romania. I wish I had a better understanding of business but according to most reports I've read this is a good thing.

Less Candy More Junk Food

Apparently Candy and Sweet advertising has gone down, however advertising for fast food has gone up.
