When a Cookie is a Candy Bar

I think I might have found the missing link. The cookie/candy bar that’s both a cookie and a candy bar at the same time. The candy world has had a great debate for many years now, it’s even become a legal matter in a few places. It’s a question that gets put to me many times, sometimes aggressively. It’s all about trying to define candy and treats. In this case it’s a look at what’s a cookie and what’s a candy bar with a cookie in it. Legally this question is asked when countries are trying to define what should or shouldn’t be sold in the candy isle. A Twix bar is a great example of this kind of treat, most people would call it a chocolate or candy bar, but in reality it’s actually mostly cookie. Even a Kit Kat bar is debatable in this context.

The reason I bring all of this up is this “cookie” I recently discovered in a store in France. It’s called the Petit Ecolier and it really balances the line perfectly between being a cookie and being a candy bar. It’s not even subtle about it either. A Twix and a Kit Kat bar hide the fact that there’s a lot of cookie in them by covering everything in chocolate. This bar on the other hand keeps the cookie and the chocolate entirely visible. There are a few cookies out there that are stuffed with all kinds of things you might find in a candy bar too. This treat does not do that, the chocolate bar is totally visible on top of the cookie.

I can’t tell if the makers of this treat are lazy, or are trying to troll people. They really just took a cookie and smushed it together with a chocolate bar. There’s nothing really creative, but the fact that no one has done this before kind of makes it creative. The ratio of chocolate to cookie is almost perfectly split as well. I’ve never been so perplexed with a treat in my life. People often get mad at me if I review cookies or cakes on this site (claiming they’re not “candy”), but I’m tempted to give this a try just to see if anyone would react.

The only thing that gives this treat a category for me is the fact that I bought it in the cookie section of a grocery store. This brand also makes other cookie treat, but I’ve never seen any candy from them. It’s truly the treat that balances the line, it’s both a cookie and a candy bar.

P.S. I just wanted to note that these Petit Ecolier taste great too.

It's Not Always Easy Finding A Trendy Candy

People assume that I have just about every single candy in the world at my fingertips, but that's just not the case. Right now I live in South East Asia, and while there are a bunch of fun exotic (for North Americans and Europeans at least) treats around me all the time, I find it pretty difficult to find the trendy treat from other parts of the world. I happened to luck out to get this latest trendy treat, but often I find myself missing out on some of the really neat treats I see online.

See what I thought about one of the most trendy treats out there right now.

Tony's All Week

I feel like it's fair to dedicate an entire week to Tony's chocolate bars. For me in North America, they seem to have shot out of nowhere to become a really strong independent brand of candy bars. Since this appears to be a European thing, it was difficult for me to get my hands on one of these bars, but now that I've tried one (actually 3) I can see why the world is going bonkers over this bar. They're so great that I'm dedicating this week to reviewing all three of the bars that I have.

Make sure to follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to keep up with all the Tony's reviews I have planned this week.

Don't forget to check out my Patreon too, it's full of bonus content and in some cases free stuff.

Have You Ever Eaten a Summit Bar?

At first I didn't want to like this bar, then I saw the peanuts on top of a wafer idea and now I want to try it really bad.

Even The Worst Chocolate Bar Is Still A Chocolate Bar - I Love Brunei Darussalam "Dark Chocolate"

While I was writing this review, I was a little nervous that I might offend someone. I didn't hate this bar, but it did disappoint me a little. The review seems kind of negative, and frankly I'll stand by the fact that this is not the best chocolate bar I've eaten in my life (either theme wise or quality wise). The thing is, it was still a chocolate bar, and I still enjoyed it. With a few exceptions, that can actually be said about just about every review I've ever done on Candy Critic. Even some of the lowest scoring treats on this site are still fun to eat. With a few exceptions, there really isn't any one treat that I would recommend avoiding completely.

Click here to read this negative review that I felt a little guilty about writing.

Today's Review Is Really A Classic Candy - Dairy Milk "Chocolate"

As you may or may not know, I've been working on an updated version of candycritic.org. The first of two main focuses of this update have been a new look, but I've also been looking at organizing and editing the hundreds of reviews that we have (as of writing this we have 1,343 reviews on the site). While organizing these reviews, I've noticed that there are many classic treats that I have not reviewed, and that I should. I've posted a blog in past highlighting a few of these, and I'll have another post going up soon with even more forgotten reviews.

The thing is, when I realized that I had not yet reviewed the classic Dairy Milk chocolate bar, I couldn't just let that one go. I've reviewed several other Dairy Milk bar variations, but I had yet to review the classic. This was so wrong, and I had to fix that immediately. So on my next candy run I set off to pick up a Dairy Milk bar, and here we are, I've righted that wrong.

It's Cold, Buy A New Shirt

It's so cold in many parts of the world right now, you really can't have enough to put on. Why not celebrate your favourite candy review site with one of the many layers you put on? Best of all you'll  look pretty cool with this design from Tom Yeo.

You can even add more layers by buying a few t-shirts from our store.

It's Time For A Review... From Someplace Really Cold... Maybe It's Not Such A Good Idea - Sirius Rjomasukkuladi

I'm feeling a little down lately. I've got the Christmas blues attached to a little home sickness. I'm a big fan of Canada at this time of the year. I like the decorations, I like the snow (as long as I don't have to shovel it), and I like the holiday treats. I'm not in Canada so I miss not having it all around. Yesterday however Allison and I baked cookies, went to a Christmas concert, and also visited a Christmas market, and it helped.

I thought it might also help even more to have a chocolate bar from a place where it's really cold right now. Turns out that didn't help very much at all. I am looking forward to the review we're posting on Thursday because it's really filled with Christmas cheer. So here's hoping I get that last jolt of cheer before the holiday's start up in full.

Click here to read today's review from someplace really cold (Iceland).

Make sure to follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to see our very festive review this Thursday (it's really Christmasy).

You can also check out our YouTube channel if that strikes you as fun.
