I'm not sure how many people know this, but Disney World is really a foodie destination. I think some people think that this theme park's best food offerings are corn dogs and chicken nuggets, but that's just not true. Granted these options are available, but this series of 4 theme parks, many resorts, and so much more offers some pretty amazing food as well as attractions. There's everything from "fine dinning" to some pretty interesting niche snacks.
Since this is a blog about sweets, and candy, we'll start there. Disney excels at some sweets, and fails almost completely with others. When it comes to bakeries and hand made sweets, Disney has a huge assortment of things to try and almost none of them will let you down. Some are classic Disney treats, like the famous Dole Whip, and others are far more unique and fancy, like pumpkin fudge (a special treat for the fall season).
Disney has also jumped onto the cupcake bandwagon with guns blazing. Every single restaurant, bakery and many snack stands offer cupcakes. Some are unique to their area of the parks, others are available all over the resort, almost every single one we tried was tasty, some were down right fantastic. These weren't the only trends that Disney seems to be trying out (we saw "cronuts"), but cupcakes are certainly the sweet treat that seems to be working for them. They're all over the place, and there are some pretty amazing choices available. If you check some of the Disney World food blogs (yes these exist) you'll find that people collect these cupcakes like others collect Disney trading pins.
The good thing about their fine hand made and baked sweets is that they spread them throughout the resorts, including to the restaurants. They've even taken the idea of dessert to a new level and started dessert parties. These are parties that you pay extra for, and are associated with another event. We went to the Star Wars dessert party, and it was pretty good. The party consisted of a huge dessert spread in an indoor area with all kinds of Star Wars characters wandering around. After the dessert party, we were ushered to a reserved spot for fireworks, and also given a special Chewbacca mug. It was a great night, and the food was constant.
Speaking of constant food, if we're to talk about the meals at Disney there are two descriptions that work, huge portion and fancier than you might think. We had some days where we just felt sick at the end of the day. One piece of advice that comes up on many Disney travel blogs is that sometimes you might want to share a meal. I would say that most of the time you'll want to share a meal. These massive portions were actually a down side for me. The food was interesting, so I wanted to try as much as possible, but the portions are so big that you can't. Since I'm a person that likes variety, I found myself really limited, and often overstuffed.
While the portions were a bit of a bummer, as the Candy Critic, I have one huge complaint about the sweets, and it breaks my hears since I'm a huge Goofy fan. Disney has a few series of packaged snacks and candies including Goofy's Candy Company, Chip and Dales Snacks, and a few others. These are prepackaged candies and snacks available everywhere in the resorts. For the most part, I found these snacks to be very disappointing. Most of them were just regular snacks packaged in Disney packages. A few had Disney shapes when they could, but even that was limited. I would think since they're putting so much money into creating some epic foods and hand made sweets throughout the parks that maybe they'd have some clever candies as well. Alas that was not to be found, and you can read my review here to find out how disappointed I was.
All in all I would say that Disney World is expensive, but worth it. I don't see us going back in the near future, but not because we didn't have fun. The portions were huge, and some of the flavours a little dulled down for North American palettes, but all in all I really enjoyed the food. Some was OK, but most was surprisingly amazing. If you're really into food, and you want to visit, I recommend visiting the Epcot Food and Wine Show (it was going on while we were there), it takes the surprising food variety of these parks and amps it up a bit.

This Week In Candy
at
12:00 PM
Candy News - I've been reading a lot lately about finances in the candy industry. Cocoa and sugar prices are constantly fluctuating, and this creates uncertainty in the candy business world. Fortunately it seems that only a few candy businesses are suffering so much that they have to close down, but many are feeling the crunch. I worry when economic problems hit the candy industry, because it often leads to quality problems. When cocoa and sugar are expensive (or even threaten to be expensive), candy quality can go down. One of the great selling points of candy is its price, that's why the candy industry does well during recessions. Because of this, candy companies will work harder at keeping their prices low, even if it sacrifices quality to do it.
What's Happening At Candy Critic - Knock wood, I should have some good news about something I don't want to talk about yet. Other than that we've been keeping busy with working on some new articles that should be online in the next few weeks. We're also trying to come up with a good theme for our next candy review-a-thon that we hope to have next week.
Rant - I've often mentioned on this blog, my dislike for sugar free sweet treats. I want to clear one thing up about that. I'm not against sugar free sweets, I'm against the way they are marketed to the world. Sugar free sweets are an excellent way for people with health problems, like diabetes, to enjoy a treat now and again. They can also be a great way to curb your sweet tooth, but you have to be careful. Many sugar free sweets may contain other ingredients that are also bad for you when eaten excessively. If you're looking to lose weight, or just eat healthier, the best way to do this is eating moderately. This also allows you to enjoy the, often better tasting, sugar filled sweets. Just because a treat comes in one package, does not mean that it's a single serving. Also, a single serving for you could be very different than a single serving for another. Learn to enjoy a taste of a sweet treat, without trying to fill a hunger.

Wednesday's Candy Links
at
9:00 AM
I so want one of the candy dispensers of the future, it's got a motion sensor so if you're too lazy to hit a bar or turn a knob you can still have candy.
Portion control is the best way to keep eating treats, but not gain weight or health problems, fortunately if you live in New York you have many option in the "smaller treat" category.
No more caffeine in Massachusetts schools, I fear those kids who wait till the last minute and pull all nighters will suffer.

A Little Information About Portion
at
3:21 PM
Many times on this site I have said that I feel the key to keeping healthy while enjoying sweet treats is portion control. Let me make one thing clear, portion control not only deals with the size of the treats you eat, but also how many and when you eat them. If you eat an entire bag of mini Nestle Crunch bars between breakfast and lunch, that's still really unhealthy. However if you eat one mini Nestle Crunch bar after right after lunch as a little treat, that's OK.

Portion Size Works
at
12:31 PM
Need the science? Well click on the link bellow. It's good to see that people are researching how good portion control can be for the world. It's not about taking out sugar, it's not about guilt tripping people that like to eat sweets now and then, it's about not eating 12 pounds of sugar in one sitting.

Portion Control Is Getting More Popular
at
4:00 PM
Experts are more and more agreeing that the best way to deal with obesity in the world is through portion control and not "diet" alternatives. Even better, it appears that more and more companies are jumping on the trend and creating smaller portioned treats.

I Want To Eat Half As Much As I Do Right Now
at
4:25 PM
What could I possibly do to cut down the amount of sweets I have, by half? This is a question I get a lot, but few people ever really think about the most obvious solution. Why not cut your candy in half and eat only one half at a time?

Obvious Advice is Still Good Advice
at
10:16 AM
"Trying to limit sugar consumption will be beneficial" is a quote I just read in an article all about the fact that most people eat way too much sugar in their diet. Fortunately this article doesn't go off about how the candy industry is destroying the human race, and instead simply suggest people learn about what they eat and limit the amount of sugar intake. Good advice if you ask me.

Do You Crave Junk Food?
at
11:56 AM
I don't think I crave junk food as much as people think I crave junk food. I'm interested in junk food, I think it's a fascinating subject to write about and to photograph, but I don't think I have a problem. In fact I really don't eat that much junk food on a daily basis at all. Or am I just lying to myself.

Expert Advice On Eating Easter Treats Healthy Like
at
10:13 AM
I just read a health column that featured a letter from a reader that was concerned about the amount of sweet treats around during the Easter holidays. Normally I don't really like these kinds of columns because they give unrealistic advice and condemn the candy world because it's an easy target. However Karen Collins gives some pretty good tips on cutting down. She promotes portion control, as well as making sure you sit down and enjoy whatever treat you're about to eat, so you get the full effect. Good advice.

Portion Your Sweets
at
11:39 AM
It appears that companies producing sweets (such as Dairy Queen, and Starbucks) are starting to produce smaller treats, and this is good news. It's good news because that means that these companies are interested in selling you something that has less sugar and less calories, but they're also interested in selling you something that tastes great. The other way companies like to sell you treats that have less sugar and less calories is those crazy low sugar diet treats, and they often taste bad and sometimes later prove to be even worse for you.

When I first saw this article about eating junk food in front of the television I thought it was kind of obvious. It claims that eating junk food in front of the TV is not good for you. Well duh, I thought. Then I read more, apparently one of the bigger problems is that watching television might actually affect your ability to judge how much you've already eaten. This pretty much doubles the danger, not only are you not exercising, but you're also over stuffing your face.

More Good News About Small Portions
at
4:03 PM
Time and time again I've said that if you want to deal with obesity you have to change two things in the food industry. First go after companies that make "healthy treats" that aren't really healthy. Second is to make sweet treats in smaller portions so you can enjoy the great flavour and continue to eat well. Panda licorice is the latest group on board with the portion controlled size.

X-treme Eating 2010
at
4:02 PM
It's not really a contest but more of a look at some of the foods that restaurants serve in huge portions. I have to admit that some of these do interest me, but I'm fairly certain that I wouldn't eat the whole thing.
