Canadian Candy That I Love - Part 2 - Crispy Crunch

This classic Canadian candy bar can best be described as similar to a Butterfinger, only much, much better. It's also the candy bar that my dad would pick up every time we'd go out to get some treats (which was often). This is a candy bar that brings me back to my childhood every time I taste it.

Hey Jelly Belly!!! Some Flavour Ideas - Candy Bars

Candy Bars

So far we've looked at two categories of Jelly Belly flavours that I think should exist, yesterday it was beans based on Japanese snacks, the day before Middle Eastern spices, today it's about working with other candy companies.

I seem to remember Jelly Belly having a few bean crossovers with soft drink brands in the past (and maybe present).  I'm pretty sure I've had a Dr Pepper Jelly Belly before.  I think expanding this idea is a great way to go.  Why stop at drinks, why not work tie inns with other candy brands.  I assume that Jelly Belly isn't really in competition with Kit Kat, as they're completely different kinds of candy.  This difference is what I think would make candy bar themed Jelly Bellies work so well.  I think visually you could decorate the beans with the package colour to make them more distinguishable.

Since it's my favourite candy bar, the first one I'd love to see is a Kit Kat inspired Jelly Belly.  I think the only challenge with this bean would be getting some kind of hint with the texture.  I'm not sure how you could simulate wafer without just adding wafers, but if anybody can do it, the folks at Jelly Belly can.

Snickers has the best option for gimmicks when it comes to making a Jelly Belly.  I think you could give the bean a chocolate/caramel flavour, then instead of adding peanut flavour, why not add real little chunks of real peanuts?  It would ad an interesting texture, and would insure that the peanut flavour was authentic.

Butter Finger would probably be the most difficult of all of these bars to re-create in a Jelly Belly form.  If they were willing, I would suggest that Jelly Belly look to their Canadian neighbours for help.  In Canada there's a similar bar to Butter Finger called Crispy Crunch, the two difference between these bars is the shape, and the nutty quality of the toffee.  The flavour of the Crispy Crunch is just so much nuttier, and I think that's what you'd need to sell the Butter Finger as a Jelly Belly.

Super Bowl 50's Candy and Junk Food Commercials

This year's collection of Super Bowl commercials is not the best I've ever seen.  It seems like the Super Bowl commercials are becoming a genera into themselves.  It used to be that Super Bowl commercials were innovative and creative, now they're just strange, shocking, and kind of boring.  It's been a few years since I've been blown away by a Super Bowl ad.  It could be a lack of creativity, fear from brands that invest big money into these commercials, or the fact that I'm an old man now.  Most likely it's the latter.

Just because they didn't impress me, doesn't mean I'm not going to post them.  Here's all of the candy/junk food related commercials I could find from this year's line up.  Since I didn't watch the game I'm not sure if I've missed any, and I'll ad any new ones if I come across them later.

Drinks:

This is pretty standard, it looks great, but it's not very creative.



Probably the strangest commercial this year.



This might be my favourite commercial, but only because I'm a comic book nerd.

Snacks:

Doritos had some kind of crazy contest where anybody could make a Doritos commercial and the "best" one would have a chance at being played during the Super Bowl.  Here's the three finalist:







Of these three, the Ultrasound commercial is my favorite.



Nothing's better than mixing candy with a rock star's ego.



While it's a funny, the concept of this Snicker's commercial is kind of old.



I'm not sure if this is making fun of extreme commercials or not.

Certainly there are some well made commercials this year.  Could I make a better Super Bowl commercial, probably not, but I'm still a little disappointed.  Maybe next year things will get better (more creative), or maybe the allure of making creative, over the top commercials for the Super Bowl might be going the way of the dodo.

I have to admit, I'm kind of shocked by this commercial.  I'm shocked that Butterfinger would associate their candy with the song Babies Got Back, and I'm even more shocked they way they made this song even a little more edgy.  I'm not really offended by this commercial, in fact any shock I have is out of respect.  It's good to see candy companies going out on a limb, even if it's a really strange one.

It looks like that Christmas stocking is made of cellophane.  I can't argue that I often dream of candy for Christmas as well.  It's strange, I never thought to ask Santa for candy for Christmas, I always just thought about toys.  Maybe this year I'll ask him for all kinds of sweet treats instead.

Classic/Creative Candy Advertising

When did it become un-cool to dress up as a bunny?  It seems like the perfect costume.  I'm sure it keeps you warm, it's got a great deal mobility, and girls would be more than happy to give you a scratch now and then.  Sure it's not as cool as the current trendy costume, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thick twerking (oh man), but it's timeless and you could use it as pajamas afterwards.

Rob Lowe to Direct Butterfingers Movie

I'm not really sure what to think of this.  I like Rob Lowe, he entertains me.  I like Butterfingers, they're tasty.  I like comedy movies, and I even like horror films now and again.  So the fact that Rob Lowe is directing a Comedy/Horror movie for Butterfingers should make me so happy, but yet I'm still skeptical.

Smashburger Is Selling Butterfinger Shakes

I love it when candy companies team up with restaurants to create crazy deserts and drinks.  Dairy Queen and McDonald's have been doing it for years with they're famous cool deserts.  It appears that smaller chains are also getting into the act as well.  I've never been to a Smashburger but it sounds intriguing, even more so with a Butterfinger shake.
