Super Bowl 50's Candy and Junk Food Commercials

This year's collection of Super Bowl commercials is not the best I've ever seen.  It seems like the Super Bowl commercials are becoming a genera into themselves.  It used to be that Super Bowl commercials were innovative and creative, now they're just strange, shocking, and kind of boring.  It's been a few years since I've been blown away by a Super Bowl ad.  It could be a lack of creativity, fear from brands that invest big money into these commercials, or the fact that I'm an old man now.  Most likely it's the latter.

Just because they didn't impress me, doesn't mean I'm not going to post them.  Here's all of the candy/junk food related commercials I could find from this year's line up.  Since I didn't watch the game I'm not sure if I've missed any, and I'll ad any new ones if I come across them later.

Drinks:

This is pretty standard, it looks great, but it's not very creative.



Probably the strangest commercial this year.



This might be my favourite commercial, but only because I'm a comic book nerd.

Snacks:

Doritos had some kind of crazy contest where anybody could make a Doritos commercial and the "best" one would have a chance at being played during the Super Bowl.  Here's the three finalist:







Of these three, the Ultrasound commercial is my favorite.



Nothing's better than mixing candy with a rock star's ego.



While it's a funny, the concept of this Snicker's commercial is kind of old.



I'm not sure if this is making fun of extreme commercials or not.

Certainly there are some well made commercials this year.  Could I make a better Super Bowl commercial, probably not, but I'm still a little disappointed.  Maybe next year things will get better (more creative), or maybe the allure of making creative, over the top commercials for the Super Bowl might be going the way of the dodo.

A Cool Candy Thing

I have to admit, I've never tried the geyser tube experiment with Mentos before.  Every time I have the opportunity to try it, in other words I have a pack of Mentos and a bottle of Coke, I don't really want to spend my time spewing cola all over the room.  Instead I'm much happier to sit back, sip my coke, and finish it off with a minty treat.  Maybe if I invested in this contraption it might help inspire me.

Old Candy Critic Articles - Coke and Pop Rocks

I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog.  This week I answer one of the ultimate candy questions... What happens when you mix Coca-Cola and Pop Rocks. 

For your benefit we have done this experiment twice: Once by mixing Pop Rocks and Coke in a glass and videotaping it.  In the second experiment I simply eat the pop rocks and coke and pray I don't die. The first experiment allows you to see what horrible things are happening inside my body.

We shall first examine the results from in the glass.

We started off by filling the glass with one full packet of Pop Rocks. Pink seemed appropriate. The initial popping and explosion of liquid was rather shocking, but it calmed down quickly and continued to pop with all the ferocity of a bowl of Rice Krispies. Minutes later, it just fizzled out completely.

The smell of the “beverage” afterward was rather horrible, and after one sniff I decided that maybe taking a sip was a bad idea.

Next, we take a look at what happens when you (or in this case me) consume this kind of concoction directly.  We started off by filling my mouth with one full packet of Pop Rocks, blue was all we had left.

Putting a whole bag of Pop Rocks in your mouth is not really my idea of fun… No wait a minute, it is. Instantly my mouth was transformed from your average everyday mouth into a party of popping and fizzing.  After adding a little of the brown bubbly goodness into the mix I soon discovered that my biggest problem might be the fizz trying to escape from my mouth. Let’s just say, the party got out of hand.

I was keeping it in my mouth for the benefit of the photos, but eventually I did have to swallow what didn’t shoot out of my mouth when I tried to close it. Whenever I tried to close my mouth my cheeks would inflate, thus spewing what appeared to be green foam from my mouth. This did make it difficult to swallow but eventually I managed.

Thinking the worst was behind me, or at least safely inside me, I started to relax. Then, I felt the rumblings of a ball of gas in my stomach that kept getting bigger and bigger. In fact, it’s still there and it’s not feeling too hot right now. My stomach that is; I’m sure the gas is fine.

So now I wait. I’m either off to the hospital, going to burp myself senseless, or just drop dead. I’ll let you know tomorrow.

Day 2 part 1 (the first 12 hours)

I'm not dead if that means anything. I'm pretty sure at this point that I'm not going to die as a result of the Pop Rocks and Coke mix. I did feel really bloated for a while after, but nothing the occasional belch couldn't deal with. It's only been about 12 hours since I did it and they say that it takes about 24 hours for your “system to clear out”, so let's see how I do.

Day 2 part 2 (the 24-hour mark)

Well, it’s not really the 24-hour mark; I was watching a movie and I lost track of the time, sorry. No matter, I’m feeling fine and the gas has subsided. It appears that lady death has decided to pass me by, this time. So ends the horrible rumour that coke and pop rocks are a deadly combination.

Airport Find - Worst Coke Machine Design Ever

One of my favorite things about traveling is checking out airports.  In particular I love checking out all of the unique treats and treat advertising that you can only find in airports.  On my recent trip to Brussels I took note of a few of the great candy displays and exclusive treats, and I'm going to post a new one every day this week.

Seriously?..  Do I really have to write any words down here to explain how wrong this Coke machine is?  Why in the world would anybody from Coca-Cola approve this?  I'm not complaining, but I'm also not tempted to buy a Coke right now .

New... Old... Coke Bottle

Coca-Cola has announced that they're re-releasing some of their original bottles for a limited time.  I do love old soda pop bottles, I find them artistically so interesting.  The problem I have is when they re-release old bottles and charge a premium for them.  Does it really cost more to produce this way?

Apparently Coca-Cola is distributing new machines that let you add flavour to your fizzy drink.  Best of all the number of flavours available is fantastic.  Better still, you can mix flavours and make even more crazy flavours.

Cool Coke Design, Bad Coke Name

The new design of the Coca-Cola bottles is based on the helmets worn by one of my favorite techno groups Daft Punk, so that's pretty cool.  The part I'm not sure they thought all the way through is the name.  They call it "Club Coke" and I'm pretty sure that name sounds like it's taken by a certain illegal drug.

Coca-Cola is The Wonder Product

It's a find drink that makes me happy, particularly when I'm trying to study. But that's not all it does, it can also be used as a cleaning agent, and apparently makes good brownies too. Some people are afraid of Coke because of these very facts, but not me, I love the stuff even if it can repair a car battery.

Cold Drink

I can't tell you how much I enjoy a cool beverage on a hot day. I'm sitting here writing this wondering why I'm drinking room temperature water... Now I remember. I'm really lazy and I don't want to go to the store or even downstairs just to get a cold drink.

Coke Is Really Hyping Sports

I just read this article talking about how Coke is going nuts at the World Cup. They're giving out flags, t-shirts, and all kinds of paraphernalia. I see this as a trend in their campaigning because here in Canada during the Olympics coke was also handing out flags and generally sponsoring all kinds of stuff, including the torch marathon.
