KFC came out with pickle Pepsi and I just could leave well enough alone. The bonus is that with each pickle Pepsi, you also get some Pepsi flavoured pickles.

Candy In The Media - Squishing Things
at
10:00 AM
I found this to be a lot more interesting that I thought I would. I was holding out to see the cola and Mentos getting crushed together in the press, but strangely it was the most disappointing.

Candy In The Media - Our Favorite Super Bowl Commercials
at
10:00 AM
I would say that this years super bowl commercials were either a big hit or a big miss. In general I enjoyed all of the snack themed commercials, although there didn't seem to be as many as usual. This is a little odd considering how many people worry about their snacking game before the game.
Here are all of the snacking commercials we thought were worth watching this year:
Doritos/Mountain Dew
This commercial is a great example of getting popular actors to do things that they wouldn't normally do (or Dew, if you want to be punny). It's obviously a very expensive commercial and I think it works for the football demographic.
M&Ms
I don't think I could think of a better person than Danny Devito to cast as Red (M&M). While I'm not a big fan of Super Bowl commercial sequels, I would be really interested in who they might cast for some of the other M&Ms.
Pepsi
I like how this commercial looks at the history of Pepsi marketing. It's a clever way to look back at how Pepsi has branded itself throughout the years. I particularly like the Back To The Future reference.
Pringles
This commercial is your standard goofy Super Bowl commercial, with all of the characters yelling for no particular reason at one point and everything. The thing I loved about this commercial is the potential it creates for mixing and matching Pringles flavours, something I'd never thought of before.

A Take Care Of Your Lips Candy Thing - Part 1 - Pepsi
at
9:00 AM
The problem with using Pepsi flavoured lip balm is that it would make you crave a drink all day long.

Super Bowl 50's Candy and Junk Food Commercials
at
2:00 PM
This year's collection of Super Bowl commercials is not the best I've ever seen. It seems like the Super Bowl commercials are becoming a genera into themselves. It used to be that Super Bowl commercials were innovative and creative, now they're just strange, shocking, and kind of boring. It's been a few years since I've been blown away by a Super Bowl ad. It could be a lack of creativity, fear from brands that invest big money into these commercials, or the fact that I'm an old man now. Most likely it's the latter.
Just because they didn't impress me, doesn't mean I'm not going to post them. Here's all of the candy/junk food related commercials I could find from this year's line up. Since I didn't watch the game I'm not sure if I've missed any, and I'll ad any new ones if I come across them later.
Drinks:
This is pretty standard, it looks great, but it's not very creative.
Probably the strangest commercial this year.
This might be my favourite commercial, but only because I'm a comic book nerd.
Snacks:
Doritos had some kind of crazy contest where anybody could make a Doritos commercial and the "best" one would have a chance at being played during the Super Bowl. Here's the three finalist:
Of these three, the Ultrasound commercial is my favorite.
Nothing's better than mixing candy with a rock star's ego.
While it's a funny, the concept of this Snicker's commercial is kind of old.
I'm not sure if this is making fun of extreme commercials or not.
Certainly there are some well made commercials this year. Could I make a better Super Bowl commercial, probably not, but I'm still a little disappointed. Maybe next year things will get better (more creative), or maybe the allure of making creative, over the top commercials for the Super Bowl might be going the way of the dodo.

Thursday's Candy Links
at
9:00 AM
Have you ever smelt a candy store, it smells pretty good doesn't it, scientific studies are looking into why they smell so good.
When I first read the headline "Hostess Might Liquidate" I got really excited, turns out it doesn't mean what I thought it meant.
New Pepsi might actually help you loose weight, I don't think I like this trend.

If you get a pack of M&Ms, and it's full of just brown ones, it's actually a good thing.
Michael Jackson is selling Pepsi again, too soon?
Obesity is really a problem in many places all over the world, the popular solutions so far haven't worked.

Pepsi Co's New Lab
at
6:08 PM
You may not think that much about the science of candy, but I can assure you that it's one of the number 1 priorities of every sweet treat company in the whole world. Even the one person operation at home has to think about the science of how to make a treat, things like exact temperatures to get consistency, and ingredients to keep the taste high and price low. The bigger the company gets the more they seem to invest in science. That's why when I read about Pepsi's new lab it didn't surprise me how much detail and thought they put into a simple brown cola.

A Friday Video Two-fer
at
9:10 AM
This week I came across two videos that really appealed to me. The cool thing is they’re from competing companies.
We start with this Pepsi ad from Spain where apparently they’re going to change the name of Pepsi to “Pesi” in a strange twist. I’ve read that they’re continuing beyond the commercials and even promoting the drink minus the middle “p”.
The second video I have is from coke and it’s some kind of crazy viral video about a bunch of college students that get to experience the best coke machine ever. I can only hope that the situation is real because it makes me believe it could happen to me some day.
