Doritos?

How Loud is a Dorito?
Doritos are notoriously loud, but how loud are they? It also got me wondering how loud other snacks might be, and are Doritos the loudest?

Ever Wonder How Doritos Get Their Crunch?
I've always wondered how they cover them so evenly with the orange cheese powder.

Late Night Chip Fix - Doritos Late Night "Buffalo Hot Wings"
I guess you could say that these are the best hot wings I've ever eaten. I say this because I really don't like wings that much. I'm sure it's because of the bones and the chicken skin, two parts of poultry that I don't really like. So what Frito-Lay managed to do is get all the flavour of a Buffalo hot wing and get rid of all that side stuff I don't like. As you might have guessed, I'm a pretty picky eater, particularly when it comes to meat. I'm not a vegetarian, but I do like vegetables a lot.
Click here to find out why these Buffalo hot wings worked well enough for me.

Candy In The Media - Our Favorite Super Bowl Commercials
Here are all of the snacking commercials we thought were worth watching this year:
Doritos/Mountain Dew
This commercial is a great example of getting popular actors to do things that they wouldn't normally do (or Dew, if you want to be punny). It's obviously a very expensive commercial and I think it works for the football demographic.
M&Ms
I don't think I could think of a better person than Danny Devito to cast as Red (M&M). While I'm not a big fan of Super Bowl commercial sequels, I would be really interested in who they might cast for some of the other M&Ms.
Pepsi
I like how this commercial looks at the history of Pepsi marketing. It's a clever way to look back at how Pepsi has branded itself throughout the years. I particularly like the Back To The Future reference.
Pringles
This commercial is your standard goofy Super Bowl commercial, with all of the characters yelling for no particular reason at one point and everything. The thing I loved about this commercial is the potential it creates for mixing and matching Pringles flavours, something I'd never thought of before.

This Week In Candy
Along with our latest Doritos obsession, we're also still capping a few loose ends from our Thailand trip. Tomorrow we'll be posting our Thailand food overview blog, with highlights from our trip. We're also going to be recording the third episode of Junk Fud On The Road where Allison and I will discuss some of the things we discovered on this trip. Finally, this week I have a bit of a conundrum to work out.
While in Thailand I discovered a candy called Galamay. I was going to feature it on the Thailand candy review-a-thon last week, but I didn't know what flavour to review. This candy comes in such a range of flavours that I thought it deserved something on its own. This week I have to figure out exactly what that something is. Next week I'll either post a second review-a-thon featuring only Galamay, or I'll post a special article all about this uniquely Thai candy. I may have a few updates on our Twitter and Facebook about the process of working out this story idea as the week goes on, and on next week's This Week In Candy, I'll let you know what I decide to do.
As you read above, this week's Snack Facts (out Instagram feed) is all about the bright orange chip we know and love, Doritos. This chip has a pretty fascinating history, and there's a lot out there that people don't know a lot about it. Every day this week we'll post a new fact about this crunchy snack on Snack Facts, our Instagram feed. We'll also post our fun facts on our Twitter feed and Facebook page as well.
In keeping with our Dorito obsession, this week's review is of the classic nacho cheese flavour. It's one of those snacks that I've eaten many times since starting candycritic.org, but for some reason never thought about writing a review. Click here to read the review, and find out why it's taken so long.

Super Bowl 50's Candy and Junk Food Commercials
Probably the strangest commercial this year.
This might be my favourite commercial, but only because I'm a comic book nerd.
Snacks:
Doritos had some kind of crazy contest where anybody could make a Doritos commercial and the "best" one would have a chance at being played during the Super Bowl. Here's the three finalist:
Of these three, the Ultrasound commercial is my favorite.
Nothing's better than mixing candy with a rock star's ego.
While it's a funny, the concept of this Snicker's commercial is kind of old.
I'm not sure if this is making fun of extreme commercials or not.
Certainly there are some well made commercials this year. Could I make a better Super Bowl commercial, probably not, but I'm still a little disappointed. Maybe next year things will get better (more creative), or maybe the allure of making creative, over the top commercials for the Super Bowl might be going the way of the dodo.

Candy In the Media
I'm a big fan of using candy and snacks in your daily cooking. I'm also a big fan of trying something new, unique, and something that probably won't work, but is fun to try. However, I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that you do not try this recipe. It just sounds so very horrible, and it sounds like a waste of perfectly good nachos, chicken, and Mountain Dew. While I think the nacho/Doritos on chicken would work really well, to me the Mountain Dew is really the deal breaker in this recipe. If for some reason you decide to try this out, and if it actually turns out that it's really tasty, let me know. If enough people can convince me, I just might try it... maybe.

Candy In The Media - Super Bowl Edition
It's that time of year again, time to look at some of the most expensive commercials of the year. The Super Bowl has for years been the place where big budget commercials set the tone for the rest of the year. I like to compile all of the snack/candy commercials together, to see how the advertisers are spending the loads of money that I spend on snacks annually. Unfortunately, this year I had a hard time finding any "great" ads. The Coke ad above was OK, at the very least it had a nice message.
Doritos hit us this year with three ads. I'm getting a little sick of their style of advertising to be honest. While these ads were clever a few years back, now they're just cliche. The creative spark that was Doritos Super Bowl commercials of the past, are just boring today.
This Skittles commercial is also lacking in creativity as well. I like a clever ad like the next guy, but this one is just weird for weird sake. It's about time Skittles dumped this "Taste the Rainbow" campaign and found something new. It's an awesome candy that has a great deal of advertising potential, I just don't think they're using it.
This Snickers commercial is probably my favorite this year. While it's still using the campaign that they introduced last year, they cleverly re-packaged it with a retro twist. I'll give them a pass this year, but they better have something different next year.
