Spreads - Maple Syrup

I just finished an art piece for bewarethecheese.com's fine art gallery "Senses". For this piece I had to photograph, and eventually eat more than 40 different spreads.  I've decided to post a little something about each spread that I sampled.

In Canada putting maple syrup on bread is a fairly common practice.  Putting maple syrup on bacon, sausages, pancakes, waffles, ice cream, cake, fried eggs, chocolate, fudge.... is also a common practice.  So basically Canadians will put maple syrup on anything.

Strawberries Are Suggested

 The other day I was enjoying a plate of yummy pancakes when I notice something really peculiar about my topping choice.  As you can see I enjoy strawberries on my pancakes, with a little whipped cream and some maple syrup.

 As it turns out, without having planned this at all, the folks that make my maple syrup also agree that strawberries are good with maple syrup.

Stranger still, the folks that make the whipped cream I was eating also endorse the use of strawberries with their product.

Cool Chocolate Syrup Art

Artist Mika Klos-Shakaid created an absolutely stunning painting of a lion made completely out of chocolate syrup.  It's worth checking out.

It's Maple Syrup Season!

Maple syrup season is one of my favorite times of the year.  If you've never tried good quality fresh maple syrup then frankly you haven't lived.  Although I prefer the stuff from Quebec or Eastern Ontario, the US has some pretty good stuff as well.

Bosco Doesn't Just Make Chocolate Syrup Anymore

Bosco Brand, the company made famous by they're sweet chocolaty syrup has decided to diversify a little and take a stab at the chocolate bar market.  I'm looking forward to trying one of these bars out, and I really hope they experiment a little and make a bar that tastes like their chocolate syrup.

It's National Maple Syrup Day

I find this kind of strange.  I assume that this "National" day is in fact an American National day.  The thing is maple syrup is kind of the national food of Canada.  So we don't really need to celebrate it on a particular national day, instead we celebrate maple syrup all of the time.

I Love Interactive Chilled Desserts

Nothing makes me happier than a dessert that has several entertaining tasks that leads to a brilliant conclusion. This little custard treat (I saw a commercial for it and had to try it) is just such a fun snack.

After peeling the label you flip it over, and nothing falls out at all.

Then a quick peel of the little silver tab at the bottom, and the greatest little "splorch" noise comes out of your dessert.

Lift up the cup and you have a nice little custard with some kind of syrup on top. The snack itself tasted OK, but getting it was priceless.

Corn Syrup

I'm starting to get frustrated with all of the conflicting information about corn syrup. Some say it's the worst thing in the world you can put in your body, others say it's a reasonable form of inexpensive sugar. This kind of debate makes me crazy.

Candy Breakfast

I was out and about this morning and I decided to just grab a quick breakfast at McDonalds. I got myself the Sausage McGriddle with Egg and I realized that this is probably the closest thing to eating candy for breakfast one can purchase. If you can think of anything more candy like than a bun infused with syrup I'm all ears.

Maple Time

The article bellow talks about the maple sap running in Vermont, but it's also running here in Ottawa as well. I'm so excited and I hope I can make it to a sugar bush this season to try the really fresh stuff.
