Other than all the chocolate, my favorite thing about Easter is the signifier that spring is here.  Nature starts to bloom, ice cream can be consumed, and the outdoors is habitable once again.  This photo, from our sister site bewarethecheese.com really screams springtime to me.  It reminds me how well nice weather, and tasty candy go together this time of year.

Spreads - Honey

I just finished an art piece for bewarethecheese.com's fine art gallery "Senses". For this piece I had to photograph, and eventually eat more than 40 different spreads.  I've decided to post a little something about each spread that I sampled.

I think honey might be the oldest spread in the world.  It's one of the only processed food that requires no human intervention to make.  Nature will pretty much take care of everything, so it seems like people have probably been eating this for a very long time.

Cheez Whiz Ingredients

 I'm working on an art project right now that involves collecting as many spreadable food products as I can find.  You can read more about it here.  One  of the products I used was Cheez Whiz.  It's been years since I've eaten Cheez Whiz, and I have to confess, it tastes pretty good.

 I was however, a little shocked when I read this on the label.

While I won't put this product down as being gross, because it's kind of tasty, I'm not 100% sure that it contains "no artificial flavours or colours".

Got Some More Natural Vines

Some nice folks, from a nice company, decided to send me a couple of bags of Natural Vines licorice.  Now some of you (very few of you probably) might remember that this isn't the first time I've received these treats.  However last time I only reviewed the red Natural Vines.  Since they where nice enough to send me some more, I think I'll review the black ones.

Why I Think Organic and Natural Candy Is Good

I'm not going to say that I like all organic and natural candy, however I will say that more often than not these candies are good.  I don't believe, however, that the ingredients are the key to this candies success.  I think the key is the fact that most organic and natural candy manufacturers tend to worry about small details more than the companies that don't go natural.  They have to in order to be able to market as natural or organic, so you often find that the quality is very high.

Natural Extrusion

If you don't know what "extrusion" is, it's when you take a glob of candy stuff and apply a great deal of pressure at one end, and at the other end you have a little hole.  Sometimes the hole will be shaped differently, but when the candy product is forced through the hole, it makes a cool shape.  It's pretty much the same principle as your Playdoh Mop-top Hair Shop.  Well apparently until now, natural colours could not be used with this method of candy making (for reason's I'm not really sure).  But that's all changed, a candy think tank has developed a series of natural colours that can take the abuse caused by extrusion.  The thing is, no matter how much you explain it to me, if you say the word "extrusion", the word "natural" just doesn't seem to fit.

How To Ruin The "Post Easter Ate To Much Sugar Guilts"?

The best way to ruin that sugar rush of fun and frolic is to post an article telling you how bad sugar is for you.  As an added bonus if it's all about how "natural sugar" is just as bad for you as regular sugar then you're guaranteed to feel bad.

Natural Sweeteners

So you don't want to use sugar, that's fine.  But you also don't want to use anything unnatural, kind of picky aren't you?  Well fortunately mother nature has some alternatives for you.  They come in the form of Natural non-sugar substitutes.  I know virtually nothing about these, mostly because when it comes to sweet I'm fine with just about anything, including good old fashion sugar from corn, beets, or canes.  So it was pretty interesting to read about these alternatives and find out to what lengths people will go to avoid regular sugar.

What Flavour Is Cola?

I recently picked up a bottle of cola and I had a strange thought.  On the back of my bottle it said that the drink was "Cola Flavoured"?  Now exactly what flavour is cola?  I mean I can tell a cola flavour when I taste it, but where does it come from?  Most flavours come from something natural, where does cola come from?

I have to think about this.

Remember Summer?

I love the way summer colours mix with the bright vibrant colours of candy.  I've attempted a few winter scenes in the past but they just don't go together as well as nature in full bloom, and a shinny sweet treat.

Many people that want to eat natural foods don't know that you can still find a large range of candies to suit your tastes.  One person, from the article linked bellow, just discovered that even chocolate covered marshmallows can come all natural.  Candy is pretty amazing if you ask me.

Red Honey

The New York Times has an interesting piece about a hive of bees that suddenly started to make bright red honey.  Unfortunately the honey isn't any kind of super honey at all, and in fact it apparently tastes kind of bad.  But how it happened is really fascinating.
