It's A New Episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!!

This mysterious little bun looked almost exactly the same as the package, but the real question is how did it taste?

A Simple Grocery Store Bulk Candy

I want to give a little bit of context to this candy. It's Ukrainian and was purchased (and consumed) before the events that happened there. More relevant to this story, it was purchased at an average grocery store in the bulk candy bins. The bulk candy bins are a place that most of us, myself included, often pass up unless we're looking to get a certain amount of a treat we love. However, when traveling it's rare that I stop at bulk bins in grocery stores, and I'm not really sure why. This amazing chocolate treat is a perfect example of why I should stop doing this, because this turned out to be one of the best chocolate's I've ever eaten in my life.

Read more about this amazing chocolate treat, found in a bulk bin.

It's an Easter Fun Experiment!

For this very special candy experiment I decided to taste test 4 different mini eggs. One was very different, one was better than the rest, one was surprising.

The Egg Shape Works!

I’ve always been intrigued by the Easter Egg. I don’t really understand how it’s come about, even though I’ve done some research on the subject. Having said that, I feel like the egg is a really good way to deliver filled chocolates. I’m not as big a fan of just hollow chocolate eggs, but as a means to deliver filling, I feel like chocolate eggs are very good. Because of the oblong shape each bite is a little different from the next. On the narrower end of an egg you get more chocolate to filling, but around the center it’s mostly filling and less chocolate. It allows for an interesting balancing act between chocolate and filling. I also feel like the egg is a comfortable shape to hold. This is more so when you’re talking about larger filled egg treats. While I’ll never understand the origins of chocolate eggs, I’m always going to enjoy eating them.

Click here to check out my latest Easter review, which happens to be egg shaped.

Happy Easter Everybody, Here's Our Very Special Easter Review - Chips Ahoy! "Candy"

I have mixed feelings about the candy available at Easter. Generally, I really like it, lots of chocolate and plenty of fine quality sweet treats line the shelves of stores all over the place. I would say that 80% of the treats that are commonly found on store shelves are pretty good to eat. The problem I have with Easter, from a candy point of view, is the lack of creativity. It's all chocolate bunnies and eggs filled with various things. The eggs that get me the most angry are the chocolate eggs filled with wrapped candy. For some reason that really ticks me off.  There are a few exceptions to this rule, but most Easter candy while being really tasty, isn't super creative.

Click here to find out if this cookie filled egg was creative or not.

Classic/Creative Candy Advertisement

Since we're right between the 4th of July and Canada day, I thought I would mention the most controversial difference between Americans and Canadians when it comes to candy.  That would be the availability of Kinder Eggs.  A simple chocolate egg with a little toy inside is a great example of how laws differ on either side of the border.  In the US, they're illegal, in Canada, they're a staple.  As far as I know the law in the US that bans them says that you cannot have a candy with a toy inside it.  Americans are afraid that kids will choke on the toys, Canadians aren't so worried.  What do you think is right?

Baking Today - Out of Eggs, Chocolate Chip Cookies

In my continuing effort to not buy any more baked goods, and only eat baked treats I've made myself, a craving for chocolate chip cookies took me over the edge this week.  I was ready to go, I even had a special bag of Canadian chocolate chips set aside for just this kind of occasion.  With my tong salivating at the idea of these cookies I hit a stumbling block... no eggs.  Now sure I could have gone out and bought a carton of eggs for just these cookies, but that would be silly, and require me to actually leave the house.
Instead I looked to the internet for help, and help I found.  I discovered many recipes for egg-less chocolate chips cookies, and I manged to alter my recipe just right.  Then I wondered, why would anybody want egg-less chocolate chip cookies?  I guess there are a few people out there that are allergic too eggs, but I found hundreds of sites offering recipes, too many for the few people that might be allergic.  Then I thought that maybe egg-less cookies were vegan, but then I realized that there was butter involved.  My only conclusion is, other than the few people allergic too eggs, maybe there are a lot of people in this world too lazy to go out and buy eggs, but really in the mood for fresh homemade cookies.

I think my next baking experience is going to be more candy like, I'm thinking spoon sweets with oranges.  Stay tuned.

Spreads - Egg Salad

I just finished an art piece for bewarethecheese.com's fine art gallery "Senses". For this piece I had to photograph, and eventually eat more than 40 different spreads.  I've decided to post a little something about each spread that I sampled.
I'm not a big fan of eggs, I'm pretty picky about how I eat them, but egg salad has always been on my like list.  There's something about it that isn't eggy at all, and that's probably why I've always thought it was OK.  One trick however is to be sure that your egg salad always has some kind of crunchy vegetable mixed in.

Kinder Joy, A Photo Journal

I was looking around my local grocery store when I came across this Kinder egg that I didn't recognize.  My first guess was that it was a new package for the standard Kinder Egg treat, but I was very wrong.  I decided to photograph my discovery and document it as a photo journal rather than simply reviewing it.  I decided this because frankly this treat is a lot more gimmick than candy if you ask me.
The first thing that baffled me about this treat was the strange tabs.  Remember I was expecting this to be some kind of strange Kinder Egg package.
I eventually pulled pretty hard, and I was shocked when the egg split into two.  At this point I was also pretty sure that I didn't have a regular Kinder Egg on my hands.
I decided to start with the half of the egg with the question marks and the strange paddle.  I removed the paddle and opened up the mystery side.
Inside I got a fairly strange prize.  It appears to be a statue of a chicken.  I haven't been keeping up with my kids movies lately, so I'm assuming a 10 year old kid could probably give me a good explanation.
Next I decided to explore the side marked with the "Kinder" logo.  I peeled back the foil and was pretty much grossed out at the site of two brown balls floating in some kind of white cream.
I assume that the paddle is designed to dig these gross looking balls out of the cream.
I dug away and discovered that there's some kind of brown cream at the bottom too.
Although the treat was strange, and looked really un-appetizing, it actually tasted OK.  I'm not sure the point of these treats, but I'm guessing that maybe it's some kind of alternative to the eggs in places with really hot weather?

Post Easter, Easter Links

I came across these two stories and thought they would be OK to post after Easter.  The first is all about my favorite part of Easter, the discount candy.  The second is about a man that wants a giant Easter Creme Egg, and will stop at nothing to get Cadbury to make him one.

Some Easter Stuff In Athens

While walking around yesterday Allison and I came across a whole bunch of cool Easter stuff, here in Athens.  If you want the ultimate in Easter egg, I think I've found it.  This shop (and I think a few other shops as well) have these giant two foot tall Easter eggs that have little Easter scenes in each one.  It's like an Easter doll house that you can eat.
We also saw a bunch of baby chicks and ducks.  Now I know it's not cool to buy this kind of thing, because they grow up into adult ducks and chickens that generally hate you.  But they're just so cute.

Jack In The Box For Breakfast

Good Eats looks at what can be described as the greatest breakfast idea ever, or the worst breakfast idea ever from Jack in the Box.  I've never actually been a Jack in the Box myself, but I've come really close (the one I planned on visiting was shut down for renovations the week I was in Vegas).  I've heard pretty scary stories as well as wonderful tales of this burger place.  So going first thing in the morning to get your day started is probably a bit of a gamble, but who knows, you might win big.

Busted Using Candy To Smuggle Drugs

A man was recently arrested for trying to smuggle cocaine in Easter egg candies from Columbia to the US.  Had he waited a few months he might have gotten away with it.
