Belgian Fast Food
at
2:34 PM
This trip to Belgium wasn't all about chocolate and candy, although that was the focus. I did have to eat meals as well, and although I tried, Allison insisted that chocolate cake is not a meal. When I travel I tend to visit fast food locations for lunches and quick dinners. I find I'm on the run a lot and I rarely want to sit down, except for a few dinners here and there. I also get a kick trying out many of the different fast food choices all over the world.
Belgium has one obvious fast food choice, the french fry. After all french fries are said to have been invented in Belgium, and boy do they do them right. First of all you get a huge selection of sauces to choose from. Mayonnaise is the popular choice, but the tastiest choice is the pickle sauce that I think they call Americana. I'm not sure why they call it that since I've never actually seen this sauce in the United States.

The popular way to do the fries seems to be a double fry method that makes them super crispy. They also like to dish them out in waxed paper cones that can be tricky to eat, just make sure you carry plenty of napkins. You can always tell a good french fry place by how deranged their french fry statue mascot is. The fries from the place pictured above were fantastic.
I also made a stop at a McDonald's on the road. Every country I visit the McDonald's always has some kind of unique hamburger that I'm fairly certain the locals believe can be found in the United States. For the most part they're amazed if I tell them I've never heard of it.
The name of this burger confuses me a little. You'd assume that 1955 was the date that McDonald's was founded, but according to my research it was founded in 1940. 1955 is the year Ray Crock bought the chain and turned it into the monolith that it is today. Seems a little strange to celebrate the day your fast food chain went corporate. On a side note the burger patty was huge and it was pretty tasty.McDonald's in Belgium also makes sure you're not without your french fry sauces either. They offer ketchup, mayonnaise and "Frites".
The "Frites" is actually the pickle sauce I mentioned earlier. It's pretty good and I encourage other branches to try offering this stuff too, particularly the ones near my house. However I would like it more if they didn't charge 50 cents for each sauce, that's a bit of a bummer. They also don't serve breakfasts at McDonald's in Belgium, they just open at 9 and start selling burgers.
One of our last stops was to pick up a Quick Burger. I fell in love with these guys when Allison and I did a cross France road trip a few years back. In some European countries they're more prolific than McDonald's.

Belgian Candy Windows - Modern Art
at
2:06 PM
The widows of the chocolate shops in Belgium are spectacular, almost as spectacular as the chocolates themselves. The level of competition between the chocolate shops in this country is staggering, so you would imagine they put a lot of effort towards their windows to attract customers. For the next two weeks I'm going to show you some of the great themes and ideas I came across while searching out my chocolate paradise.
The new modern trend in Chocolate really seems to be a modernist simple design. These chocolates often come in just different darkness of chocolate or sometimes they come with really strange spicy flavours. The traditional flavours are often not the focus. I assume it's an attempt to focus on the chocolate connoisseur as opposed to the general public. I find the windows of these stores to be a lot colder than other shops, but they're still really interesting. I'm not sure if this trend is going to get any bigger, but I can't imagine it taking over the whole chocolate market. My only concern with these shops is the fear that they might start thinking too much about the look of the chocolates and lower the quality standards.CC
The Second Last In Our Belgian Chocolate Review-A-Thon
at
10:00 AM
There are several really large chocolate companies that got their start in Belgium, Godiva, Neuhaus, and Cote D'Or just to name a few. Although some argue (not me entirely) that the quality of these treats isn't what it used to be, you can't deny that they've been a vital part of creating a certain standard above and beyond your simple box of chocolates or chocolate bar. This is truly one of those countries that mastered a culinary skill and is not afraid to show it off a little.

With Christmas coming, you can imagine the number of holiday themed windows I saw in Belgium. For the most part they were fairly traditional, but I think that's a good thing. Chocolate Santas, advent calendars, and other peppermint looking sweets seem to dominate. The main difference is the quality you could see in these chocolates, the advent calendars are the best example. Although pricey, at up to 30 euros each, the types of chocolates inside will make any chocolate fanatic happy, and even the box designs tended to be very creative.CC
Candy Store Tips - Candy Import Pricing
at
12:00 PM
For many years now I've been lucky enough to explore candy stores all over the world. I've seen the worst and I've seen the best. Now, each week, I'm going to give you a tip that will help you know instantly how good any candy store you walk into might be. This is also useful if you happen to own a candy store as well, follow these tips and customers will notice.
Many people assume that when I go into a candy store I spend a fortune. Fact is I'm very picky about what I pay for my treats, and I'll walk away from a treat I'm dying to try if it's unreasonably priced. When I go into a candy store I pay attention to prices and I would never suggest a store with over inflated pricing. Having said that I understand that some candy is more expensive than other candy. Imports are the most notable expensive candy that I'll often invest some money into. A good candy store will mark their imports well, but to be sure, if you see a really expensive bar and you think it's an import read the package to be sure. Many candy companies have started to manufacture some treats overseas because their import market was so big. Pocky is now available as well as some British chocolate bars for a reasonable price in parts of North America. That being said some classic bars, like Kit Kat, are made differently all over the world, and are worth a premium to taste the difference.
I'd like to thank the beautiful Snyder's Candy for providing photos for this article.

We almost all eat it, you can't deny it. Sure you probably say you don't eat it, then you give the one time or restaurant that represents the exception. For example "I don't eat fast food, I mean when I travel and I have no other choice" or "I don't eat fast food, I like Wendy's because they don't use frozen burgers and offer high quality salads" or best of all "I don't eat fast food... But I love McDonald's fries!"

10:00 AM
I met so many great chocolate fanatics on my trip to Belgium. Since the whole country is so well known for making chocolates people feel really strongly on the subject. Even those that don't make the stuff know the importance of high quality chocolate and making creative flavour combinations. The chocolate makers I did talk to take their work very seriously, and they know the best way to garner successes in this business is to create a great product.

Sexy Chocolates?
at
2:17 PM
In Belgium chocolate is just about everywhere. You cannot walk into a square without seeing at least one chocolate shop. Each chocolate shop does what it can to try and stand out from the rest. The most popular trend is hand made chocolates with a variety of flavours. Second to that is chocolate shapes, or I'd even go so far as to call them chocolate art. In this category you tend to find all kinds of shapes and colour combinations making some pretty spectacular pieces. However, some people have decided that a great way to get attention is to not only make detailed shapes, but make them erotic.
![]() |
| You can check out this photo un-censored if you just click here. |
The many choices of sexy shapes and sizes was absolutely amazing. Without sounding like a pervert, I was floored by the detail that many chocolate shops put into their erotic chocolates. I wasn't pressing my face up against the window breathing heavily or anything, but I have to say that I was impressed.
![]() |
| You can check out this photo un-censored if you just click here. |
They also didn't just focus on enticing men either, women too had an "interesting" collection of erotic chocolates to choose from. I'll be honest, I'm not really sure who would buy these, but I guess if they sell them there must be a market. I'm not really interested in choco-erotica myself, but I'm sure the chocolate is very good quality and in some cases the size of the chocolate treats are very generous, so it must be a good deal.
Even stranger is that some of the modern chocolate shops also seem to be jumping onto this bandwagon as well. Here's a selection of "Big Boobies", and although they're not as realistic as the ones above, they're still keeping in the same spirit.CC

A life sized deer, antelope, mouflon?.. I'm not really sure what kind of animal this is, but I can tell you that it is made entirely up of chocolate. Having said that, I didn't check if it was solid, or if the person who made it took the time to build a proper skeleton structure, maybe using white chocolate. I can tell you that I don't normally eat wild game, but in this case I might make an exception.CC

Just Got Back From Belgium...
at
10:00 AM
Many consider Belgium to be the chocolate capital of the world. If you're a chocolate maker and your box says "made in Belgium" people will have higher expectations. Think about that, just because of a geographic location people assume that your chocolate is better than many others. This made me wonder, can one place, that doesn't even produce cocoa beans, produce chocolate so vastly superior to anywhere else in the world?
The answer shockingly is yes. Throughout the next two weeks I'm going to post a few pieces about my adventures in Belgium. Sure chocolate will be the focus, but I'll also talk about some of the other great things that this country produces, and show you some of the cool stuff I tasted.

Candy Store Tips - Testing The Freshness of Bulk
at
11:07 PM
For many years now I've been lucky enough to explore candy stores all over the world. I've seen the worst and I've seen the best. Now, each week, I'm going to give you a tip that will help you know instantly how good any candy store might be. This is useful if you happen to own a candy store as well, follow these tips and customers will notice.
Almost every candy store I've ever walked into (with the exception of fine chocolate shops) has a bulk section. Bulk candy can be really fun, it lets you mix and match and experiment with new treats in small doses. The problem is since bulk treats are not packaged they tend to go bad really quickly. The bigger problem is that many inexperienced candy store owners don't realize this fact and let bulk candy sit for way too long. The best way to make sure you're getting good treats is to head to the first gummy (I recommend gummy bears or worms) container you find, take one of the scoops and give it a good push. If the candy isn't squishy then they're probably stale. You can also tell by the colour of gummies if they're old as well. Most fresh gummies are nice and translucent and even a little oily looking. Check a few bins, if you notice re-occurring problems then chances are they don't take care of their bins and most of the candy is probably not fresh.
I'd like to thank the beautiful Snyder's Candy for providing photos for this article.

The Importance Of After Dinner Candies
at
3:44 PM
I don't think many restaurants give after dinner candies/sweets much thought. For the most part I think they simply choose an inexpensive treat that stores well. This is a bad idea, as any great chef will tell you every detail of a meal counts. Often the first impression and last impression are the most important, and after dinner treats are the last bit of food restaurant customers will eat. I would be silly to argue that a bad after dinner treat will completely ruin a great meal, however a great after dinner sweet will take your meal to an all new level.
In Greece, for example, many meals at local restaurants are finished with a small desert instead of little candies. In the summer this dessert is often some fresh watermelon, and in the winter it can be home made halva or custard. These desserts are given after the bill is delivered and every time I have a friend visiting, and these treats are delivered, they're blown away. In these cases the meals are often great, but the extra high quality treat at the end brings the meal to another level.
One of the keys to fine dinning is repeat customers and word of mouth, if you surprise your guests with a high quality last bite I can assure you that you will see them again.

SweBurger In Greece
at
3:33 PM
As you can imagine SweBurger is a Swedish burger chain that has recently expanded to Greece. I'm not sure if they have other locations around the world other than Greece and Sweden though. I figured I would wait till my Swedish friend Alex was available to sample this burger because his national pride could only make this experience better. As it turns out I didn't just sample a burger, but I learned something about Sweden and even about international food choices.
I have to be honest I wasn't really that impressed with this burger at first. Actually as far as my personal tastes go it never really got any better. The patty was thin and it tasted frozen, the topping proportion was about the best part of this whole burger as nothing really overpowered it. The bun was pretty much like every other fast food bun I've ever eaten, not that great. The thing I'm told, by my friend Alex, is that this is just how the folks in Sweden like their burgers. Apparently the fat American style burgers are often too dry and the proportions of meat to bun and toppings is always off. Also the idea of being presented your burger open faced is just not done in Sweden. I have to say that I've never really thought that much about how other cultures intemperate the hamburger and I've always assumed that the good points of a burger are universal. Am I wrong about this, are there people out there that think a thick meat patty is too much and ruins a burger?

Candy Store Tips - Dust is Never a Good Thing
at
11:04 PM
For many years now I've been lucky enough to explore candy stores all over the world. I've seen the worst and I've seen the best. Now, each week, I'm going to give you a tip that will help you know instantly how good any candy store might be. This is useful if you happen to own a candy store as well, follow these tips and customers will notice.
The first thing I do when I walk into any candy store is look around. I don't buy anything, I don't even examine what they have to offer, I just look around. What am I looking for? Well lots of things, but one of the most important things I look for in a candy store is dust. It may seem irrelevant to the average candy buyer, but it's a sure sign that the store is not kept up as it should. After all, you wouldn't buy food from a restaurant that had dust all over the kitchen and the plates would you? I also find that really dusty candy stores are lazy about making sure the candy is fresh.
I'd like to thank the beautiful and dust free Snyder's Candy for providing photos for this article.

The Best Drink Pairing With Sweets – Tea
at
3:04 PM
Nothing is nicer than sitting down with a couple of friends enjoying a nice sweet treat. In this case the sweet treat is a great selection of pastries from Varsos bakery in Kifasia Greece, but even when the sweet treat is a chunk of chocolate, or an ice cream sundae, it's great to sit back and really indulge yourself with friends. It's a great opportunity to enjoy the company of your friends, as well as really enjoy the sweet treat that you're indulging in.
The only thing that makes this situation even better is the perfect drink. For me, this perfect drink is a slightly warm cup of tea with no milk or sugar. The slight bitterness of the tea cuts through any sweetness of your treats. It's also a great drink to cleanse the palette between bites, this is particularly nice if you happen to be eating several different kinds of sweets in one sitting. Tea goes with just about any sweet category that I can think of as well. Though strangely tea flavoured sweets often don't work well at all. I really think the liquid aspect of the tea is just as important as the flavour, maybe even more so. So, what's your favorite drink pairing with sweets?

Super Bite Part 1 - The Sweet Stack
at
2:07 PM
Creating flavour combinations is really a challenge. Candy companies and chefs spend their whole life developing the perfect combinations that make us want to drool. I've decided that I'm going to throw my hat in the ring and attempt to construct the perfect bite. My rules are simple, create the greatest sweet combination, it must be edible in one bite, and it must be super decadent.
To start off this experiment I decided that I would take some of my favorite sweet things and mash them up together. A chocolate chip cookie, a fine milk chocolate truffle, some butterscotch, and some ice cream. I figure that if I enjoy all of these items separately, I'd probably enjoy them all together as well. In fact I figure it'll make a super sweet treat like the world has never seen before.Visually I was kind of surprised at how good it looked. Admit it, that looks pretty tasty, and you'd probably buy that at high end sweet shop. The only thing I'd change about the look is the shape of the chocolate I used, maybe a round ball might have looked better.
As far as eating it goes, it wasn't really the success I was hoping for. The flavour was pretty good, but the chocolate proved to be a big problem. First of all it kept slipping off of the ice cream and almost ended up on the floor. Secondly the ice cream cooled the chocolate right down and made the it really hard to bite through. Because of this I almost choked on the chocolate and I wasn't able to bite into it immediately thus not really blending the flavours together. The ice cream and butter scotch were pretty much gone by the time I could manage the chocolate. As a first experiment I can say that it wasn't perfect, but it was a step into the right direction.

If you find yourself in Victoria Texas, why not visit Licorice and Lemon Drops Old Fashioned Candy Shop.
Do you like licorice? Do you like writing? Well Boing Boing has found the perfect tool for you.
This quote says it all and makes me very happy: "Scientists from the USDA's Agricultural Research Service recently reported discovering three previously unknown varieties of wild cacao in the Amazon rainforest of Peru."
Less gum for less money... it just might work.
Here are some "ideas for your candy surplus"... whatever that might be.
Boing Boing has an updated "Candy Hierarchy" for me to complain about.

SouZouCreations' on Etsy has a great selection of mini Japanese food jewelry.
It's funny how the words "mini Japanese food jewelry" can make sense in this particular context. In any other context it would seem really strange.
These little pieces of art are great and would make you the envy of any of your night club friends.
