Old Candy Critic Articles - The 12 Candies of Christmas Part 7

I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog.  This article I've decided to re-post a little differently.  Since it's a special post for Christmas, the 12 days of Christmas in particular, I've decided to split it up into 12 parts and count down the days till the fat guy's going to bring me some sweet gifts.

'Tis the season to eat candy fa la la la la la la laaaaaa. As we all know Santa's Sack includes candy, and you know it's always what I want for Christmas. The question, with all of the Christmas candy out on the market, is which candy really says Christmas. Well in classic Candy Critic style we're going to tell you, and you better believe we're going to make it as cheesy as possible. Sooooooo.....

On the seventh day of Christmas (whenever that is) my true love gave to me......

A Bag of Santa's Coal

Have you been bad this year? If your lucky, you might get a bag of this coal in your stocking. This treat is really just a remake of the coal miners gum from the 80's, only it's black and super fruity. The fun part has to be the idea that you can give it to any jerk you know and get them good. One suggestion is make sure you don't try and use this treat as a fossil fuel. Although it will give you a sugary energy burst, when burnt all it really does is smell bad.

Christmas Links - Part 2

Are you sick of making plain old gingerbread houses?  Why not make a gingerbread At-At?

The Big Picture has a great holiday collection of photos, including some photographs of wonderful holiday treats and holiday markets that I'm sure smell really good.

After learning that "nog" is a reference to beer, why not try some beer/Christmas cookie pairings.

Saratoga has a really strange holiday tradition, and it involves smashing peppermint pigs.

Quince Question

While researching my Greek cookbook, I came across a few recipes that call for "quince".  I've seen quinces available at shops and markets, but I really didn't know why or how people used them.  I figured, by looking at it, that it was just an ugly pear, but I was wrong.
The first sign that it's not a pear come from cutting it in half, it's like trying to cut through stone.  I had to take out my biggest knife just to get through one little quince.  I thought I'd give it a sample bite to see what kind of flavour and texture it had.  It pretty much tasted like a really bitter pear, and the texture was like biting into a log.  I've come to realize that the only way to eat this fruit, is cooked.  I just hope I can cook it well enough to improve that bitter taste.

One Ooops Reindeer

If you know funny, then you'll understand this particular treat... Actually I have a confession to make, the only real “treat” part to this toy, is the little brown jelly bean things that come out of his butt. You have to admit though, it does say Christmas. And it drops things out of its butt. Does it get any better? I think not. Well needless to say the jelly beans are okay, and getting them is a lot of fun, so for me these aren't that bad. The candies fall out of his butt... Tee-hee...

One Life Savers "Sweet Story Book"

Life Savers are one of those treats that, alone really aren't that Christmas-like, but packaged properly it's all about the holidays. The one thing I truly remember about getting these as a kid, is the fact that it seems to last forever. I mean how many Life Savers can one man eat in a day. I did notice that they cut down on the number of Life Savers you get in each Sweet Story Book, I think that's a good thing. I think the only way you could make this a little more Christmas-like would be to create special flavours for the holidays like candy cane and egg nog.

Christmas Links - Part 1

Whenever I see these candy/chocolate villages during the holiday's my first question is can I eat it?  The people that answer my question don't really understand that I'm asking if "I" can eat it "right now".

Ever wonder what the "nog" in eggnog means?  Well Alton Brown has an answer for you.

On the fourth day of Christmas (whenever that is) my true love gave to me......

One handful filled with Christmas Candies

I can't say that these are my favourite candies in the world, in fact the only time I eat them is after Christmas. But no matter what, Christmas would not be the same without them. I'm not to sure but I think I might even like these treats a little more when they're stale, although they do clump up so breaking them off can be a little difficult. The best, or at least most festive part of these treats has to be the colours. No matter what, considering the name of these treats, they have to be a holiday tradition.

A Classy Man Sips His Ginger Ale From a Plastic Cup

The ginger ale they give you on Singapore airlines is spectacular.  It's better than anything I've had anywhere else in the world, even better than Canada Dry. Words like that are blasphemy in Canada, so I'm very serious.  It has a really nice bite, not too sweet, but also not so spicy that it burns.  (Allison wanted me to mention that Canada Dry is not actually made in Canada.)

Changi Airport Singapore

After exploring Changi airport, I've made a sad discovery. Airport treats are going down hill.  More importantly the selection of treats is really sad.  Singapore is an Asian country known for a great diversity of foods, yet this airport is full of European and North American candy and very few Asian treats.  While there still are a few airports around the world that carry local treats, more and more are just carrying Toblerone bars, M&M's, and Belgian chocolates.  While I love these treats, it's sad that local treats are disappearing from airports.  And it makes it really hard to buy last minute gifts for friends.

On the third day of Christmas (whenever that is) my true love gave to me......

1 Bag of Solid Chocolate Balls

Round and covered in foil, that would be a good description of these treats. The simplicity is very overwhelming, and that's the way these things have been for years, so help me if they ever change that... Now I'm sure your saying to yourself, "Hey what's the difference between these foil covered treats and others on the market?" The big difference has to be in the quality of the chocolate. I find the chocolates in the ball format tend to be a little smoother than most other chocolate holiday treats. There are some exceptions (Hershey Kisses are one), but for the most part when you unwrap a holiday treat it tends to be very waxy. Not theses.

Now this is the part that I have to make the one complaint, and it's very simple. The foil is so hard to get off, I must have at least 20 lbs of foil in my system from unsuccessfully trying to unwrap these things. If anybody knows a quick and efficient way to unwrap these, please let me know. They taste so good but for the love of mike, I'm guaranteed to ingest some foil every time.

The adventure I have planned is pretty epic, and I'm sure I'll have many stories to tell during and after this adventure.  Till then, the blog will be a little slow on the updates since I'm not sure what the internet availability will be while I'm gone.  Some of our regular columns will not be updating Candy News, New Reviews, and This Week In Candy will not be running.  I have however decided to delight you with a weekly candy joke... I assure you that none of them are that funny.

When I get back I'll most likely have lots to tell you guys about, and if I get some time (and internet availability) I'll be sure to let you guys know of any sweet adventures I've had so far.

Till then, have a good holiday season.

Every day is like Christmas, at least the 24 days leading up to Christmas, with a cool treat like this. As far as fun Christmas candy goes, these advent calendars are great. Young or old alike love to pick up these things, and munch away till the holiday season. The only problem I really have with these has to be the quality of the chocolate. For some reason it's really hard to find a calendar with high quality treats inside. I might also be interested to have different types of chocolate for each day instead of just plain milk chocolate.

Well, no matter what the treat inside, when it comes to holiday excitement nothing gets you pumped-up like a chocolate advent calendar.

1 Candy Cane

This is the ultimate in Christmas treats. It's perfectly designed for the holidays and screams Christmas spirit. With its hook shape, its easy to hang on any tree or Christmas setup and the taste is minty fun. The interesting thing about candy canes is that they don't they sell them any other time of year. They taste great, and with a cool minty flavour, it could be very refreshing in the summer. I guess it just wouldn't be right, you really need to have these during Christmas, and for reasons I don't know, it just works.

Here's an interesting Christmas fact:

Old Candy Critic Articles - Gum Etiquette

I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog.  This week we look at Gum Etiquette from our resident gum hater Allison.
Believe it or not, there are some people in this world who do not like gum. I am one of them. In fact, the smell of it actually makes me nauseous. Physically ill, yes. I tried chewing gum once, and it actually made me gag.

Recently, I was sitting on a park bench with a friend, and it turns out he was sitting on a nice, fresh wad of gum that someone had disposed of on the bench. This has happened to me before, too. When it happened to me, I threw out the ratty old pants I was wearing at the time, because the thought of having to deal with the smell and feel of someone else’s used gum long enough to get rid of it was too much to handle. He, however, did not have the luxury of throwing out his pants, shirt, jacket, and bag, all of which were victims of the invisible gum bandit.

As I see it, there are three main areas of gum etiquette that desperately need work in North America. Actually there are four, in my case, because I actually object to its existence. But the three areas of disgustingness on which I can find several people to agree with me, are location, chewing method, and the worst of all, disposal.
Location

Before I go on any road trips, I make it clear to everyone that gum chewing is the only prohibition in my car. I say that I don’t care what else people do, as long as they do not chew gum (ok, smoking is really a no-no too). I declare that it is because it makes me nauseous (which is true, whereas oddly, smoke does not). One does not need a nauseous driver. However, just about every time (even repeat) riders climb in, they have a piece of gum on the go. One rule. Is that so hard? It’s about respect, really.

One rider did it so often that I just stopped asking them to get rid of it and just drove holding my sleeve over my face. It didn’t really help, but after 10 or so tries over the course of 2 months, do I really have to keep asking?? Driving nauseous with one hand. Great idea, but at some point, one has to just give up demanding the respect that they should just get as a matter of course.

People just assume that people around them are OK with their horrible habits, and don’t even think twice to ask if it’s OK to chew gum in certain places. I remember that chewing gum was not allowed in school. I’m pretty sure this rule had to do with the difficulty in cleaning gum off desks and out of carpets.

Is it OK to just assume it’s all right to chew gum in someone’s home or car?

Even for those who do not become nauseous at the smell of gum, there are some people who prefer not to have it in their homes or cars, just because of the potential mess that might have to be cleaned up, much like schools. Really, does it hurt to ask, “is it OK if I have a chew?” A simple question that could save a friendship.
Disposal

This is the big one.

Gum is hard to clean. Sticky does not do it justice. When it gets on something, it spreads quickly and stays forever. Just look at any city street, and you’ll see little black circles of gum disposed of in days gone by.

I have watched people walk right past garbage cans and merely 5 feet later, just open their mouths and let the gum drop out.

Have you ever stepped on a fresh piece of gum? Not pleasant, I say. Sitting on one is even worse, and I don’t think my friend and I are the only two people in the world to have done this.

Littering is a problem, yes, but gum littering is out of control! For every piece of “ordinary” garbage I see on the street, I see thousands of black circles of old gum. And gum is the hardest thing to clean. Again, it’s a matter of respect. Nobody seems to care what happens to the person who comes after them. What happened to common courtesy?

Why is it so hard to just approach a garbage can and throw your gum in it? Even better, wrap it in something first! Save the gum wrapper for this – you’ll never have to search for a piece of paper or tissue then.
Concluding Plea

I would never ask people to stop doing something they enjoy, unless it really did pose a danger to others. But I just ask you to think, next time you’re chewing a piece of gum, about how you could be affecting others around you, and what small thing you could do to make the world a slightly less dirty place.

Thanks for letting me rant.

Baking Today - Last Minute Churros

I had grand plans to cut back on the baking until I finished with my holiday adventure extravaganza (more on that later), and then a last minute lunch event came up.  More importantly a theme for a lunch event came up (Mexican) and I felt that this was a great time to flex my new adventurous baking spirit and try to make a Mexican dessert.  The only dessert I could think of that seemed attainable was churros.
I've never made churros before, and frankly I had no idea what I was getting myself into.  I did a little research on the internet and the first thing I discovered is that they appear to be very quick to make.  Most recipes said that it was a 20 to 30 minute recipe.  That is very true, but you will be working hard for that 20 to 30 minutes.  First of all the dough for the churros is really thick (kind of like play-dough) , and really difficult to pipe through a bag.
Secondly if you make your churros too small they explode... not violently or anything, but they fall apart in the deep fry oil.  My 20 to 30 minutes turned into an hour or so, mostly due to the learning curve and the few omissions from the recipes I looked up.
But in the end I think I had a churro success story.  I had to roll them by hand instead of using a piping bag, but that was actually kind of fun.  Sure they looked kind of funny, but I think if I took my time rolling them, instead of doing it in a rush because my guests were waiting for dessert, they would have looked a lot better.  Either way I was happy, my guests seemed happy, and I think they tasted great.

Sure you could try chewing Kraft's new tooth-whitening gum, or you could just brush your teeth regularly and cut back on things that make your teeth less white... Now that I think about it, the gum sounds much simpler.

I just discovered this website called "The Worst Things For Sale".  It's a simple Tumblr site dedicated to really strange and horrible things you can buy.  Many of the items featured are candy related, like this Jolly Ranchers Watermelon candle.  The only thing worse than eating a Watermelon Jolly Rancher would be for my whole house to smell like one.

This Week In Candy

With the holiday season quickly approaching, I'm starting to find all kinds of great treats with a holiday theme.  However my favorite holiday treat isn't holiday themed at all.  Instead it's filled with memories of my childhood, I remember the commercials, I remember eating them when I was a kid, and I remember my loved ones making sure I got a box of them regularly on the holidays.  The treat that brings me into the holiday mood ever year is Toffifay.  The greatest thing about Toffifay is that it's available all over the world, so no matter where I am, chances are I can get a box.

As the candy companies are doing, we here at Candy Critic are also gearing up for the holiday season.  While we are heading out on a huge adventure for this holiday season, we still have a whole bunch of holiday posts lined up.  I came across a number of old Candy Critic articles with a holiday theme, so I've decided to post them all.

The Chanukah House That Couldn't

We didn't just give away a Chanukah House last week, we also got one in the mail to try ourselves.  Since I'm neither Jewish, nor patient with these kinds of projects, I decided to send this to my Jewish relatives in the US.  As you can see there are a bunch of great decorations in the kit...
However all was not well with the Chanukah house.  As you can see many of the cookie pieces were broken.
I'm not sure if we should blame the folks at Manischewitz or the US Postal Service for this problem.
I can assure you that a valiant attempt was made to erect the perfect dwelling for a cookie Jewish family.
But in the end the house fell apart and it turned into a big... yummy looking... mess of cookies and icing.  I think the problem might have been in the packaging and the fact that the cookies don't really have much from keeping them apart   Cookies colliding in the mail can lead to broken cookies.  Maybe if you bought your Chanukah house at a store, it might fair better, assuming that the people putting them on the shelf don't drop them.  If you've had better results with your Chanukah house, let us know.

Baking Today/My Greek Cookbook - Candied Fruit

My most recent experiment, for my Greek Cookbook, has been to make Orange Peel Spoon Sweets.  It was easily the most nerve wracking, baking/cooking experiment I've made so far.  My biggest fear was making a mistake, and sampling my first concoction, only to realize that I did something wrong and the bitterness of the orange peel hand't gone away.
I researched many recipes and discovered that the key seems to be regular boiling.  I assume that boiling takes the bitterness out of the oranges.  So I boiled my orange peels many times over.  Even though my first batch looked right, I was still really nervous about sampling my first piece of orange peel. Fortunately it seemed to work very well and I was left with a mouth full of slight tart, but most sweet orange peel.
I'm not really sure who came up with the idea of taking the worst part of a fruit, and turning it into something better.  It sounds like the result of a bet.  "I bet you can't eat this entire orange. I bet I can."

Old Candy Critic Articles - Good idea or bad idea

I've decided to take down several old articles from the candycritic.org and re-post them here on the Candy Critic blog.  This week I look back at an article all about how I manage to get over the mental block that is candy I'm not thrilled about trying.

When I look at a bar, do I give it a chance? I try to. I try and look at every treat out in the world with open eyes and without pre-judging it, but that's not easy. There are certain things I just don't really like. One of the things you'll notice about this site is the lack of licorice. I'm not a big fan, so for the most part I figure why do I want to put myself through that. I also don't really like coconut, which explains the lack of "Almond Joy" or "Mounds" bars. I'm not saying my mind can't be changed, I've eaten licorice and coconut treats that I didn't mind. Sometimes my mind is changed completely and that's the biggest compliment you could give any treat.

So I can't ever say that I'm completely impartial when it comes to picking treats. Sometimes I see an idea and it just seems stupid. I'll scan through the candy counter and see things I just can't figure out. So how do I get over it? Well, that happens several ways. Sometimes it’s from people e-mailing me about a treat they really want me to try. Sometimes I can't think of anything else to eat. Sometimes I just want to challenge myself.

What I've done today is decided to try and show you an example of a good idea and a bad idea using two chocolate bars. One I think is a great idea, the other I'm not that thrilled about. I'll eat each one and let you know if I think the idea is still good or bad after eating the treat.
Kit Kat Caramel Chunk

Before I eat it:

This seems like a stupid idea. I like "Kit Kat", but adding caramel just seems like too much. I think these candy company's are just over working a simple idea by adding caramel to everything. Some bars work with caramel but I don't think this one will.

After I eat it:

I can't say I didn't like this bar, after all its a "Kit Kat", but what I can say is its not really that necessary. The caramel takes the flavour out of the "Kit Kat", and the chocolate takes away the caramel flavour. So I'm here with a strange textured chocolate bar. I like "Kit Kat", this new addition just takes away from a well-balanced bar that it already was.
Coffee Crisp Triple Mocha

Before I eat it:

This idea seems to make sense. Coffee and Mocha, it's really one in the same. It's something you'd find at your local coffee shop, a flavour that's been around for a long time and I'm surprised they didn't come out with this sooner.

After I eat it:

If I could describe this bar, I'd have to say that it’s like a regular "Coffee Crisp" but a little chocolatier. It's not bad, I couldn't tell you how much better it is than the old one but I think it’s a little different. The mocha is subtle enough or it works so well that I don't really notice the flavour that much. I'd eat it again if offered, but I don't think I'd crave it.

Tuesday's Candy Links

The new ultimate goal in the candy industry is to develop a chocolate that tastes and acts like regular chocolate, yet it contains less chocolate and fat.  I'm convinced it can't be done.

If you head over to your local M&M's World stores this holiday season, you'll enjoy a winter wonder land filled with multi-coloured treats.

The folks that make Luck Charms are starting to market it towards adults, the thing is, adults already like it the way it is, so why change your marketing plan?

This Week In Candy

You may have noticed that this entry has in fact been backed dated.  Why is that?  Well the start of my week was a stressful fight with bureaucracy that lead to me not having interenet for almost 4 days.  While I love writing about candy, and taking photos of candy, and eating candy, I hate the whole technical side of running this site and all that it entails.  No matter, after several phone calls, and a guy coming over with a computer around his neck, that was awesome, we have internet and I'm not going to go through the process of updating everything I couldn't when it was down.

Other than that, we're preparing for an epic adventure this holiday season, and that's taking up a lot of time mostly just trying to tie up loose ends.  We also have a winner for the Chanukah House contest, so thanks to everybody who entered.  We're also working on a few new ideas to add to the blog in the new year, so get ready for all that too.

Not Means Nut

I love languages, in particular I love it when a language can be almost decipherable in English,  but not exactly.  For example, this bar is called "Choklad Not", and it is a chocolate bar with nuts (hazel nuts to be exact.  So if you find yourself in Sweden and you want nuts, or chocolate, you just have to use the words "not", or "choklad".  See, candy is educational too.
