This Week In Candy

I've got major website update on my brain. There are two inspirations to update the whole look of the site, one is a comment someone made, the other is a feeling.  The feeling comes from the fact that it's spring, and spring cleaning is in the air. This often makes me think about spring cleaning on my websites as well.  The comment came from a young web designer who commented that although the content of my site was fine, the look (and coding) was horrible.  It hurt a little, but I do know there are a few things I've wanted to change about the site lately.  My first choice is do I change just the look of the site, the second choice is to update how the whole site works.  I'm not very good at a lot of this modern web coding, but there are also a few tools out there that might help me out.  Basically I'm looking at you guys out there, can you help me update candycritic.org, or maybe I shouldn't bother?

Other than that, the regular workings here are going to keep on trucking. Allison and I are thinking of per-recording a bunch of episodes of Junk Fud On The Road over the next month.  We're both going to be super busy this summer, and it would be nice to get ahead. I'm also starting to prep things here for Easter, including deciding what should be the official Easter review.  Let me know if you have any Easter favorites you think we shouldn't miss this year on Facebook and Twitter. We're also plugging away at the Doughnut Project, and we should have a few new entries later this week.

This week's new review should have been perfect, but its imperfects were so great that it made it really disappointing. Not what I would expect from the folks at Trader Joe's. Click here to find out why things went downhill.

This Week In Candy

It seems I'm at the beginning of a cold.  It doesn't seem like a really bad one, but it's not great either. I could have got the cold because I've been out of the house a lot more lately, or Allison might have given it to me (she was a little sick a while ago). It also could have come from the fact that I've been really busy, but just maybe it came from the toxic shark meat I ate the other day, but really who knows. No matter how I got the cold, I'm always looking for new fun ways to get rid of it, so if you have any ideas, let me know on Facebook or Twitter.

If I did get the cold from working hard, it might have been because of the fact that I've been creating a lot of fun content for candycritic.org.  This includes a new episode of Junk Fud On The Road, that will be coming out later this week.  This episode is all about the time Allison and I went to the Canary Islands. While on this trip we did see a few Canaries, our food choices weren't nearly as fun.

The other project I worked on this weekend has to do with eating shark meat, and it comes in the form of a special episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!!  We finished shooting the episode this weekend, but it won't be going online until the beginning of April.  All I can tell you is it's one of the most intense foods we've ever featured on the show.

This week's new candy review comes from one of our Valentine's Day reviews.  I reviewed the special deluxe Hershey's Kiss, and I realized that I've never reviewed the classic Kisses.  So this week we're fixing that problem. Click here to find out why I've waited so long.

Does Suzy Q's Get An "A"?

Over the last few months I've been working on something called the Doughnut Project.  The goal of the Doughnut Project is to sample as many different Tim Horton's doughnuts as possible. Every time I try a new doughnut I post it on our Instagram feed as well as where I bought it on our Candy Map. It's been a fun project, however one of my friends, Adriana, has been frustrated with me.  She's of the mind that Tim Horton's doughnuts are sub-par, and that a man like myself should not eat these second rate doughnuts.

Adriana has been trying her hardest to get me to expand my doughnut eating experiences, and she started with a local place (here in Ottawa) known as Suzy Q's. Suzy Q's is what I would call a trendy bakery. Trendy bakeries are places that generally sell only one or two different items, they're also often sparsely decorated, and only hire young people to work at the front. With trendy bakeries you also often find that excess is the creative inspiration, that or sometimes weird flavour combinations.  More often than not this kind of bakery does not appeal to me, mostly because many of these places focus on the weird or the excess, rather than putting out a good product. It's very rare for a trendy bakery to impress me, but when it does it's often spectacular.

Suzy Q's does fall into the category of trendy bakery, and at times it also falls into the traps of trendy bakeries. They seem to fall into this trap more in the excessive than the strange flavours, however there are a few strange flavours as well.  The good thing is that while they do fall into the traps sometimes, they also offer some pretty tasty doughnuts as well.  I sampled four different doughnuts, the Grasshopper, Dirty Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Bumbleberry.

I picked the Dirty Chocolate because when I checked out their website, I thought it looked the best.  I tried the Salted Caramel because when I went to the store it looked the best.  I picked the Bumbleberry because it looked very pretty. Finally I let the guy at the counter pick the Grasshopper. One of these doughnuts was very disappointing, one was OK, and two were pretty good.

The worst was shockingly the Dirty Chocolate, it was bland and had a weird texture. The OK doughnut was the salted caramel, it tasted fine, but the texture of the caramel was a little weak. I was really happy with both the Bumbleberry and Grasshopper, both had interesting textures, and I really liked the crunchy marshmallows on the Grasshopper. All around it was a fine experience, and I regret nothing, but it's not likely that I'll return to Suzy Qs.

The problem is simple, price.  I paid ten dollars for four doughnuts. I'm not sure if you can just buy one doughnut, but that price is not listed on their sign. So I felt a little forced to buying four doughnuts, and at ten bucks they're not cheap. It's not that I object to the idea of paying two-fifty for a doughnut, but that doughnut better blow my mind away.  These doughnuts were OK, but they didn't change the way I saw doughnuts.  They weren't a creative leap in the field of doughnuts, and the quality of the doughnut itself wasn't anything inspiring.  If someone gave me one to eat, I'd be happy, but I don't know if I could justify paying that much again for something that didn't blow my mind.

Do you know a doughnut place that I should try, let me know on Facebook or Twitter. Also, how do you spell the name of these ring shaped pastries, doughnut or donut?

This Week In Candy

The picture above terrifies me. I'm not going to get into detail about this other than to tell you that it's the subject of a future episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!!, and I'm very afraid. This particular food is legendary, and I'm very nervous.  Allison (who bought this for me) is, I believe, looking forward to my torture.  I'm not going to say what it is right now, but I'm very certain that I'm not going to like this at all.

On a better note, last week I checked out a new doughnut shop here in Ottawa, and later this week I'm posting a review. It was a pretty interesting experience, and you can read all about it right here on Wednesday. This week we're also starting to organize the Easter content for candycritic.org.  We're going to post a few facts later this month on our Instagram feed Snack Facts, and we're trying to pick out the perfect candy review. I might even work on a few Easter candy inventions as well. Make sure to follow us on Twitter or Facebook to keep up with day to day goings on here.

This week's new review should have been a great gummy experience, but it failed.  It didn't fail as much as it really disappointed, and that might be worse than failing. Click here to read the review, and find out why I hate being disappointed.

This Week In Candy

St Patrick's Day is coming, and I have to be honest, I've got nothing. This really isn't a holiday that's associated with any kind of candy or junk food, unless you count beer as a junk food.  The closest I could come up with is any kind of green candy, but that just seems disrespectful. It's not that there aren't any great Irish candies either, I just don't have any I can review right now.  That and many Irish candies are also popular in England, Scotland and Wales. I have a hard time splitting them up, and I wouldn't want to make any assumptions.  So don't take the lack of celebrating St Patrick's Day on candycritic.org as a sign of disrespect, I just don't think it's really appropriate.

I really do feel bad about not celebrating St Patrick's Day this week on candycritic.org, so to make it up we're having a review-a-thon of sorts. I thought the only way to celebrate the Irish is to celebrate the potato. I know that associating the potato with the Irish is a little offensive, however I know there's some historical merit when it comes to the potato famine. So all this week we're going to post a new potato chip review every day. Make sure to follow us on Twitter or Facebook to keep up with all our fun (and festive?) potato chip reviews this week.

The first review this week is not really celebrating the Irish, unless you count the potato thing which we've already decided might be slightly offensive.  Today's potato chip review is all about Canada, it's a special flavour of potato chip dedicated to two very Canadian flavours, poutine and bacon.  While the idea was there, the execution didn't go as well. Click here to find out why.

This Week In Candy

Yesterday was my birthday, and for the most part I managed to hold off on the extreme eating portion of this celebration. That was until the night of my birthday.  A group of friends invited me out to an Indian buffet restaurant. I did not know that it was a buffet before we left, but I was pleasantly surprised when we got there.  Then I learned that this Indian restaurant had a pretty decent dessert section at this buffet.  After a big plate of food I figured it was safe to indulge with a few desserts. I made sure I was filled right up, after all it's my birthday.  Then the cake came out, yup, my awesome friends got me a classic birthday cake,it was yummy, the entire quarter of this cake that I ate.  I made it through the whole day without overindulging on my birthday, then my great friends had to ruin it for me. As soon as I finish writing this, I'm going to go lie down for a while.

As for what to expect here at candycritic.org this week, I can tell you that you shouldn't expect much more today, my stomach hurts too much and I just want to go to sleep.  Later this week however you can expect a new episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!! Just in case my stomach wasn't sore enough already.  I'm also working on a special article in my head about sugar taxes.  I was inspired by a study done in Berkley on the subject.  You can check back here to see all this stuff, and keep up with our day to day activities on our Facebook and Twitter feeds.

This week's new review is a really unique candy.  I'm not sure if these gummies are something new, but they are new to me. Crunchy Gummies caught my attention, but the candy itself delivered. You can read our latest review right here.

This Week In Candy

The shelves are filled with Easter treats. Every year it seems as though more and more Easter treats seem to be appearing.  It wasn't so long ago that the only Easter treats you could find were chocolate eggs, chocolate bunnies, and for a few of us Cadbury Creme Eggs. But now there's so many new treats coming out every year.  Just last weekend I happened to be going to the USA, and I stopped at a Walmart to see what I could find.  I was very lucky to come across a bag of Peeps themed Oreos.

I have to be honest, I wasn't expecting much out of these cookies.  I figured it would simply be the standard vanilla Oreos with the center being dyed pink, but I was wrong.  While the flavour is definitely vanilla, the cream has an extra bonus.  In the cream are little crystals of crunchy sugar, giving these a pretty unique texture.  I can't say that these are my favourite Oreos, but I might like these more than regular marshmallow Peeps.

What else is happening this week at candycritic.org?  Well first of all my birthday is this week, I know this has nothing to do with Candy Critic directly, but maybe a little indirectly.  This is mostly with the fact that it might be a slow week here at Candy Critic.  I'm going to be writing a few things behind the scenes, like the future Canadian candy project I'm working on, but other than that I'm going to take it easy this week. I'll be posting about some of my birthday fun times on Twitter and Facebook.

Don't worry though, we'll still be adding new posts on the Doughnut Project and Snack Facts, our Instagram feed. We're also going to be working on writing a few reviews for later in the year.  Finally, we're working with a certain candy company right now, putting together a contest where we're giving away a whole lot of tasty candy.  You'll have to check back later to find out how you can win.

This week's new review is in celebration of National Strawberry Day, which is today.  It's a review I wrote a while ago, but I think it's appropriate for today.  Click here to read the review that might make you think about berries in the summer.

A New Episode Of Junk Fud On The Road Is Online!

In this latest episode of Junk Fud On The Road, Allison and I talk about the UK.  Normally with Junk Fud On The Road we talk about particular countries, but this time we've expanded to a group of countries.  It's likely because they're close to each other, both in geography and in food selection, but it's also because a few of the countries (Wales in particular) we've only visited for a short time, and we didn't want them to be left out.

This Week In Candy

I've decided to go on a bulk buying extravaganza.  I came across 20 dollars in our candycritic.org budget, and I've decided to spend it on bulk candy.  There's a chain of bulk food stores in Canada called Bulk Barn (I know it's a silly name, but it's really an amazing place), and I've decided that I'm going to spend the money there.  I love buying bulk candy because it allows me to buy a huge variety of treats without having to buy a huge quantity.  When you buy in bulk there's often no minimum, so you can go into a store, put one gummy bear in a bag, and pay for it. It reminds me of the old days of penny candy, which as far as I can tell no longer exists anywhere.  So I've got a few bucks to spend at a bulk store, what do you recommend I get? Let me know in the comments, on Twitter, or Facebook.

This week we're also posting some great new content, including a new episode of our podcast Junk Fud On The Road.  Junk Fud On The Road is all about the places and foods Allison and I have discovered all over the world.  This episode is about one of our favourite foodie places, the UK. I know it's not really a country, but a collection of countries attached to an island, we just couldn't help ourselves.

This week we'll also be posting a few new additions to the Doughnut Project, this is where I attempt to sample as many different Tim Horton's doughnuts as I can.  Since it's Rrrrroll Up The Rim To Win time, I find myself going to Tim Horton's fairly often no a days. For those that don't understand Rrrrrroll Up The Rim To Win, it's an annual contest at Tim Horton's where you have to roll the rim of your cup up to find out what you've won.  It's a contest that's so popular in Canada that it makes the news every year. As of this morning I've only one a free coffee, but I'm hoping my luck changes. Make sure to check out the Doughnut Project on our Instagram feed.

This week's new candy review comes from our latest episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!! The candy was a gift from some friends that went on vacation in Cambodia, and they picked me up some rather strange treats. This one had the most unique packaging ever, but I'm not sure how it affected the candy itself.  Click here to check out the latest review.

This Week In Candy

Happy Valentine's everybody!  Well it's the Valentine's Day week at the very least.  I like to celebrate Valentine's Day all week, but that's mostly because I'm cheap and don't deal well with pressure.  Trying to get all that romantic fun stuff smashed into one day is too difficult. Also, restaurants and other places one would likely take a date on this day are way over priced. So I like to treat Allison special all week long.

This week on candycritic.org we're not leaving you out in the cold this Valentine's Day either.  We did post a new review today, as we always do, but we're going to have a second special Valentine's Day review posted on Valentine's Day as well. Make sure to keep up with our Twitter and Facebook feeds to check it out (you can also follow us on Tumblr, Pinterest and Google+). We're also giving you the best gift of all, you get to watch me eat something very questionable.  On Thursday we'll be posting a new episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!!

We've also been posting regular Valentine's Snack Facts on our Instagram feed, as well as adding to our collection in the Doughnut Project. So we've been keeping really busy over the last few weeks.  All of this and we're working on a few new projects, as well as planning for a really big announcement this summer.  It's pretty crazy here, but for the love of candy, it's worth it.

This week's new review (along with the one we're posting on Valentine's Day) is just a little Kiss. I've never been a huge fan of Hershey's Kisses, however it seems they've managed to improve things a bit with these Kisses Delluxe.  After posting this review, I've realized that I still haven't even reviewed the regular Kisses too, I'll have to fix that.  Click here to read all about these special Kisses.

Winter Candies

There's a huge gap in the winter candy market.  In the wintertime there are plenty of Christmas and Valentine's Day candies, but there are very few, maybe no candies that celebrate winter itself.  Being Canadian, and understanding how great winter can be, I've decided to design a few winter candies on my own.  I've had some help from a few of you guys, as well as friends and family (many of whom don't actually read this blog... disappointment).

As always when I come up with candy ideas, these ideas are free for the taking for any candy company that wants to make them.  All I ask in return is a sample of the treat after they're made. If you do make them, and send me some, I can guarantee a review on candycritic.org and likely guarantee a perfect score when it come to novelty.  Now it's time to warm up with some cool winter candies and snacks.

Mulled Wine Gums

I'd like to take credit for coming up with Mulled Wine Gums, but I can't.  I was working with my new friend Jess, and I asked her for ideas for this article.  She instantly blurted out, "Mulled Wine Gums" and I knew that it was a perfect idea.  I'm not that familiar with regular mulled wine, but I know it's huge in Germany, the place where gummies were invented. I'm not saying that it's a coincidence, but I'm also not saying it isn't either.  I think the variety of flavours you could make of these gummies would be limitless, and you could also ad a touch of various citrus flavours as well.

Potato Snowshoes

This is probably the silliest of all of these ideas, but I think it would be really fun too.  I wanted to make sure to include a salty snack with this list, and potato strips in the shape of snowshoes seems perfect.  It could be like those Hickory Stick snacks, only larger, and the shape of snowshoes. You could make all kinds of flavours that remind you of winter, like cool ranch, or BBQ... OK those flavours aren't really winter themed, can you think of a winter themed flavour that would work with a salty snack?

Keep Me Warm Candies

Of all the winter themed treats on this list, this is the one that I think would be the greatest of all. I call them Keep Me Warm Candies, but you can change that if you want.  The premise is really simple, make a candy that warms you up.  The important thing is that the candy isn't "hot", it's just warm.  Also, get away from using normal hot flavours like cinnamon, and use fruit or spice flavours instead. The point is that you could eat these candies, and on a cold day they would warm up your mouth just a little bit, not enough to burn, just a little bit warm.  It's like the anti mint gum.

Winter is here, and we need candy to hold us over until the spring/summer, when there appears to be limitless numbers of treats.  All you candy makers out there have officially been challenged, but if you already have a winter candy let us know. We'd be happy to review it on candycritic.org.

Superbowl Candy Commercials

I have to be honest with you, I generally don't watch the Superbowl. I don't watch the halftime show, I don't watch the commercials, and I most certainly don't watch the game.  It's not that I don't like sports, in fact I really enjoy watching basketball and baseball, I just don't like the idea that one game can determine the outcome for an entire year.  I also don't like the commercials because I live in Canada and they don't play those amazing American commercials here, we get low budget Canadian ones.  I don't watch the halftime show because then I'd have to watch the game and the low budget Canadian commercials to know when that happens.

Having said all of that, every year, the day after the game, I go through YouTube and watch some of the commercials.  I have three categories of Superbowl commercials that I watch. I watch any trailers for upcoming TV shows or movies that I'm interested in (as a side note, really excited about Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2). I also watch the commercials that everybody is talking about, not that many this year to be honest.  Finally I watch all of the candy related commercials, which I'm going to share with you right now.

This year there weren't that many candy commercials, or at least not many that I could find.  Worst of all it seemed to be the same brands that have commercials every year.  Just once I'd like to see a Hershey Bar or Gummy Bear commercial.  Better yet, if they ever bring back Runts Candy, they should introduce it with a Superbowl spot.  This year there were two candy commercials, and an interesting cola commercial that I feel suit being posted on this blog.

Surprisingly, or not at all, the folks at Skittles decided to do a weird commercial.  This seems to be a trend with them, and I'm not sure why.  It's become so common place for Skittles commercials to be weird, that it's not weird anymore.  I think to surprise us, one year they should just do a normal commercial, with nothing weird at all, now that would be shocking.

I imagine that this Snickers commercial might have been more entertaining if you were watching it while the game was on, because it has details about the game live.  That would have made this kind of funny.  Watching after the game, having not watched it at all, it just seems a little weird, but not weird like the Skittle commercial.

As a Canadian I can't say that this commercial made me feel any kind of patriotism, but I'm guessing it's not supposed to.  This is in fact a jab at Trump, and the current American governments stance on immigration. Unfortunately it appears that Trump was actually at the game, so he likely didn't see it, unless he reads this blog, which is very doubtful. So it's a pretty commercial, with a message for people other than myself.

This Week In Candy

Winter is in full force, and here in Ottawa (where I'm living right now) Winterlude is on.  Winterlude is a celebration of snow and ice, or as I like to call it a desperate attempt to make the cold weather fun.  The good thing is that Ottawa does a great job at making it fun, and after a day of walking around town bundled up, I almost forgot about the fact that I couldn't feel my fingers. One thing that I came across on our Winterlude adventure was a treat that truly represents the cold days of winter, and has no relation to Christmas or Valentine's Day, and that's tire d'érable. Tire d'érable is boiled maple syrup pored on snow and frozen into a tasty treat. I'm not sure if this is a thing anywhere else in the world (Vermont maybe?), but to me it represents winter in Canada perfectly.

Speaking of winter treats, this week we'll be releasing our three winter themed candies we'd like to see.  Check back later this week for our ideas on treats with a winter theme, one of them might even help you out on these cold days.  Today we're going to go through all of those Superbowl commercials, and tomorrow we'll post our favorite candy/snack themed ones.  So far it looks like it's all the regular Superbowl advertisers, and frankly I haven't seen anything that's blown me away, but I have a few more to go through still.

This week's new review is from our friends at Weaver Nut, Sweets, and Snacks. They sent us a box full of interesting treats, but we thought these Pure Milk Chocolate Buttercrunch With Almonds squares looked the most interesting. Check out our review here.

This Week In Candy

I've been working on the article all about winter themed candy ideas, and it lead to a new idea.  I was asking my friend Jess about some winter themed candy ideas when she started to get into the idea of Canadian candy ideas.  Since Canada is turning 150 years old this year, it sounds like designing some special edition Canadian candies would be a good idea.  I'm still at the early stages of this idea, however if you can think of some good ingredients, flavours or themes for Canadian candies, let me know.

Speaking of Canadian candies, not too many people seem to be interested in my campaign to get Tim Horton's to make a Beavertail style doughnut.  I'm still going to keep pushing it, but I really need your help too.  Call your local MP, write to the Prime Minister, at the very least make sure to post our fun little graphic (found here) on Facebook or Twitter.

This week on candycritic.org, we should be posting the latest episode of Junk Fud On The Road, all about the UK.  Hopefully we'll also post the special article all about winter themed candies that we've designed (as we mentioned above). We're also starting to think of fun future adventures later in the year, and gearing up for a big one (but we'll talk more about that later).

As for this week's review, it's a "new" variety of Sour Patch Kids, that I hope sticks around for a little while.  In fact I hope they keep trying new varieties as I think these gummies work really well with alternative flavours.  Click here to read the review.

This Week In Candy

I have a mission. Allison has recently inspired a mission that I feel the whole world (or at the very least Canada) must achieve. We as people of earth must convince Tim Horton's to make a Beaver Tail inspired doughnut.  This would achieve the greatest, and most, Canadian thing every accomplished and what could be better than that? The thing is I cannot achieve this mission alone, I need your help. I've posted an image (click here to see the image) that I encourage you to share, and make sure to include @BeaverTails and @TimHortons in the post. Tell them that you want a #BeaverTailDoughnut, and you want it now!

I don't want anything in return except the opportunity to sink my teeth in into a Beaver Tails Doughnut. Check our Facebook and Twitter for regular updates on our noble mission.

Speaking of doughnuts, we're still adding all kinds of doughnuts to our newest project, the Doughnut Project on Instagram. Our continuing goal to sample every doughnut Tim Horton's has to offer (and hopefully one day this will include a Beaver Tail doughnut) is going well, and we've now decided to include Timbits. This week we're also recording (and hopefully posting, the latest episode of Junk Fud On The Road, I believe this episode will be all about the UK.

This week's new candy review is a classic bar that I was so convinced I had already reviewed, I taped an episode of In Hindsight early this year about it.  As it turns out I hadn't even reviewed it yet, so looking back on the review was a little silly. Instead I decided to rectify the missing review and make sure it was well represented.  Click here to read about my favorite white chocolate bar.

This Week In Candy

This past week I came across something that really rubbed me the wrong way. I posted a photo on our Facebook and Twitter feeds, and asked if people could figure out why the photo bothered me. Instantly everyone figured out what was wrong with these cookies (see the image here). You might at first think it's the pink colour of the cookies, while not really that appetizing, it wasn't the real problem. The real problem is very simple, mini Hershey's Kisses are just chocolate chips, calling them mini Hershey's Kisses sounds silly.  I'm sure Hershey would argue and say that these "Mini Kisses" are made of the same chocolate as Hershey's Kisses, so they are in fact not the same.  I would then argue that chocolate chips come in a huge variety of chocolate types. This might make me start calling regular Hershey's Kisses, giant chocolate chips.

What do you think about these mini Hershey's Kisses, are they just chocolate chips, or is there something different about them?

This week here at candycritic.org we're starting to work out our designs for winter candies. Last week we told you about our goal to create a few special winter candies that aren't Christmas or Valentine's candies. A few people have suggested some great ideas, but we're still looking for more, so send us any winter candy ideas to us via Facebook, Twitter, or just comment below. We're also still updating the Doughnut Project and Snack Facts regularly.  You can check out both of these projects on our Instagram feed (as well as our Facebook and Twitter feeds).

This week's new review is not my favourite candy in the world, but it brings back fond memories.  It reminds me of the time I spent Christmas in Australia.  Not only was this a fun trip to remember, but it also reminds me that at least somewhere in the world there are people that aren't freezing. Candy In The Media

This is likely the most progressive candy advertisement using sex to sell candy.

A New Episode Of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!! Is Online!

For the first time ever, we have a guest on Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!!. I'm not sure who was most afraid of doing this, my nephew Feroner, or me.  But we ended up having a really good time, and I think we might try another episode in the future.

This Week In Candy

Boy is it cold out there. It's our first winter in six years (we've been living overseas) and it's been pretty extreme, in Canada where I live we've had more than 150 cm of snow, and as I write this the temperature is around -15 degrees. It got me thinking about winter candy, or the lack of it. Sure there are a huge range of candies for Christmas, but the day after Christmas Valentine's day and Easter candies start to appear on the shelf. What about January, and half of February, what are we supposed to eat then?

A great deal of candy in this world is really designed for summer. Anything you eat with your fingers can be cumbersome while wearing gloves or mitts. Mint flavours make your insides freeze along with your outsides. Most fruit flavours just remind me of warmer days, and that's depressing. And ice cream is just out of the question. So what kind of candy can we eat in the winter? Maybe I'll think about it and try and design some specialty winter treats. If you have any ideas, let me know on Facebook, Twitter, or comment below.

This week on Candy Critic we're going to post our latest episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!! featuring a special guest, my nephew Feroner. We shot a two (maybe three) part candy tasting series over the holidays. The first episode is online at Feroner's YouTube channel right now, make sure to check it out here. Part two is going up on our YouTube channel later this week. It was a pretty intense episode of Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!! but we both survived.

To help me think about warmer days, I decided to review a classic African candy bar.  I figure that since it's summer there right now, maybe it'll make me feel better (nope). While this bar has brought back fond memories of the time I visited Africa, it really wasn't that impressive itself.  Click here to find out why.

Most Memorable Candies Reviewed In 2016

2016 has been a pretty big year of change for us at candycritic.org.  Actually it's been a return to lack of change, if you look at it technically.  This is the year we returned home after 6 years away.  The goal, to get back in touch with my Canadian roots, with a few stops in the US to make sure I haven't missed any other North American things.  Because of this change, our reviews have been pretty eclectic as well.  We've had candies from all over the world, but over the last few months, a focus on North America.

I feel like my palette has evolved with living abroad and I look at North American candy a little differently. Sometimes I think I see it as more nostalgic (particularly during the holidays) and sometimes I see it as so advanced and confusing.  It really depends on my mood, and the candy.

This post is all about looking back at old reviews.  I've picked 5 that are not the best or worst, but some of the most memorable reviews of 2016. They're each memorable for different reasons, some good, and some bad but all made me happy that I was a Candy Critic.

Worst Candy - Remember in that paragraph above where I said that this list does not contain the "best or worst" candies, well I kind of lied. This durian candy might be the worst tasting candy I'd eaten all year.  It was so bad that it was memorable, and that's why it's on this list.  If you're not familiar with durian, it's a fruit found in Asia.  This fruit smells so bad, that many airlines will not let you bring them aboard.  I can only describe the smell as being similar to sweaty gym socks, rotten onions, and burning tires.  The connoisseur of this fruit claims that although it smells really bad, the flavour is smooth and creamy. The problem is that the smell is so pungent that it's really hard to taste anything but the gross smell.  Needless to say, these candies while being very gross, pretty much match the fruit perfectly.

Craziest Chip That Worked -There seems to be a trend these days of making sweet flavoured potato chips.  Sweet and savory in the potato chip world is nothing new.  When I was a kid I remember tasting my first chocolate covered potato chip, and although it was a delicacy, it was around.  Today we see chocolate covered pretzels and sweet flavoured potato chips at our local corner store.  The chocolate covered snacks work most of the time, the sweet flavoured chips aren't always as successful. These chips not only worked, but they worked in a very unique way.  They combined two flavours that worked together, butter and honey, then mixed them with potato chips.  The butter works with potatoes as well, but this is the first time I've seen it matched with chips, and it works. These chips not only tasted great, but they made me think about new possibilities in potato chip flavours.

Strange And Memorable Candy - I don't know how much I liked, or disliked this candy, but I seem to remember about the adventure of trying to find it.  This candy was bought as a result of me trying to find candy in India.  It was one of our last adventures when we were living abroad, and I wanted to find something that represented our trip to India.  These stick out to me because they remind me of our secondary mission in India, to eat as many different varieties of mango as possible.  That mission was a great success, even thought this candy wasn't.

Candy Most Likely To Make Me Enjoy Licorice - This candy represents two things for me.  First of all it's a step towards me trying to gain a taste for licorice.  In the last few years, living abroad, I decided to try and change my palette in two ways, one to gain a taste for licorice, and secondly to try and tolerate hotter foods.  Both of these have been fairly successful so far, and I felt that the fact that I kind of liked these chocolate covered licorice candies was proof.  The second thing these candies represented to me was those chance meetings where things go really well.  Allison was in New York at some meetings (I tagged along), and there was a small reception.  I talked to a few people at this reception, often about candy.  I met one man who was from Iceland, and I mentioned to him that I'd never eaten candy from Iceland before.  He mentioned that he happened to have a giant bag of Icelandic candy with him to share with anybody who might be interested.  I ended up leaving with a big bag of puffin eggs and a great story.

Most Surprising Variety - It's very rare that a "normal" candy makes my list of most memorable, but these Skittles really worked well.  First of all I first tried them in the fall, actually I first tried them while walking through Gatineau park in Quebec while walking a trail during the fall.  Gatineau park is world famous for the beautiful fall colours, and this day did not fail.  I was walking along eating these Skittles and the flavour just worked so perfectly.  Even though a few of them aren't orchard fruit from where I live. The fruit choice was perfect, and the timing was perfect.  This doesn't always happen when I'm eating candy, but when it does it's truly magical.

This Week In Candy

Well it's the new year and that means there's going to be a few changes here at candycritic.org. The first change has already started and that's with our Instagram feed, formerly known as Snack Facts. From now on our Instagram feed will feature both Snack Facts (but on a reduced schedule) and the Doughnut Project. The Doughnut Project is an attempt by me to taste as many different Tim Horton's doughnuts as I can. At this point there is no end date to this project, and I'm not likely going to actually get through all of them as Tim Horton's keep coming up with new flavours all the time. The Doughnut Project is also featured on our Candy Map where we mark each location where I bought the doughnuts.

The other project that is going to change is our podcast Junk Fud. At this point we are retiring Junk Fud News. It was a project that took a lot of time and frankly everything on it is available on our Twitter and Facebook feeds. We still plan on continuing Junk Fud On The Road monthly, as well as our not so regular Junk Fud And You podcasts. Chris, Why Would You Eat That?!!, our video show will also continue.

There has been some thought of discontinuing our weekly Candy Thing blog post, and instead featuring Candy Things during some holidays and special events. We had hoped that people would find these things interesting, but it doesn't look like anybody cares.

Our goal in doing this is to focus on  other things, mainly reviews and original articles on this blog. Some of the fun was lost on this blog for us, and we want it back.

This all leads us to this week. Having shrunk down some of the content here on candycritic.org, we had time to put together a fun little article collecting our most memorable reviews of 2016. We should have that ready to go online tomorrow for you to check out.

As usual, we have a new candy review online, in fact we're going to start the new year off with a bang and we have a review-a-thon going up all this week. We figured why not start the year right with a Kat Kat review-a-thon. Our first entry is from Japan, one of the best places to get Kit Kats in the world.  You can read that review right here. But make sure to keep up with the whole review-a-thon this week by following us on Facebook, Twitter, or check here daily.
